Thanks. You are quite right, it's the pp that usually makes the difference.

I haven't really noticed any difference in that regard, but I have seen comment about that.
Have you checked if the Pentax base curve is being applied?

Thanks, but I'll have to confess that the raw file wasn't as nicely exposed as this, and darktable really deserves the compliments :)

Yes, they are impressive, and good subjects as they often just cruise around making it a bit easier to get a nice shot.

What software do you use to post process your photos?

That's not really a problem, just use dcrawps to export the pixel shift as a tiff then do post processing in darktable or whatever other software you like.

645D Which Flash to use for TTL

My manual for the Pentax AF540FGZ II which also covers the AF360FGZ II, indicates that both are compatible with the 645D, but I have no info as to whether the 645D can do TTL.
Your camera manual doesn't say anything about that?

The Darktable Users Coterie

If you are shooting raw (you mention DNG) then custom image settings on the camera have no effect, they will only affect the in-camera jpg processing.
Differences between the displayed image and the printed image is a perennial problem, and can be quite complex involving screen settings, printer settings and the printer paper used.
I see small differences here in an image displayed in darktable, GIMP and the GNOME Image Viewer, not sure if one can hope for all to be exactly the same.
Others may have more definite help.

Terry

I've been watching the bird on the nest (usually the male during the day I think), since mid Sep.
The hatchling was kept under the 'skirts' for a while, and is growing fast now, almost has all the flight feathers.
The most obvious difference in appearance, to Owls, is the beak. Owls have the raptor beak.

Terry

Good to see flash sync speed is 1/200 sec. on K-3 III.
I didn't see anything about shutter life, hopefully it will be 300k like the K-1.

Focus Issues?

Are you saying that you didn't see any difference when using live view, or when using the viewfinder?
AF fine adjustment only affects PDAF which is what is used with the viewfinder, AF fine adjust will have no effect on live view.
You have to take a lot of care when attempting AF fine adjust, making sure you have an appropriate target that will show the effects of front or back focussing, and using the tripod ensure that shake reduction is off.
If you have followed all the normally recommended procedures, then I would suggest you may have to take a number of shots at each AF fine adjust setting as there is likely to be variation between shots.

I see jatrax has just beaten me to it.

Terry

In this neck of the woods it would be known as a Kestrel...it's very similar to our Nankeen (or Rufous) Kestrel.
Not sure what the local naming would be in your neck of the woods, but possibly similar.

The zoom can creep when the lens is pointed up or down, more so when the lens has had a lot of use and the seals are less tight, but it won't/can't creep if you hold the zoom ring, which to me is a natural way of holding the lens and allows you to rapidly re-frame as required, so I'd say it's not an issue if hand holding.

Terry

I agree that there is variation among lenses, but I have confidence that my DFA 150-450 does provide good results. The lens was recently calibrated by the local distributor and service provider (our local lens-hospital), and to my eye it produces excellent results, but I reckon my DA*300 does that little bit better. I don't think there's much in it.

Terry

Maybe I misunderstand what you mean, but in my experience, both lens are not comparable concerning 'light eating'.
My understanding of 'light eating' is that light is lost between lens entry and the sensor.
It all looks pretty much the same in regard to f stop, DA*300 f/5.6 at 420mm, and DFA f/5.6 at 450mm, but that's not a measure of the actual light reaching the sensor.
I'm really talking about the t-stop, and my guess is that the DA*300 + 1.4xTC at f/5.6 is probably not too far from 5.6, whereas the DFA at f/5.6 is probably up around 8....ie somewhere around 1 stop advantage to the DA*300.
I haven't done any controlled tests, they are probably best done indoors with controlled lighting, but real world shooting with the DA*300 does seem to allow lower ISO/higher shutter speeds.

Cheers,
Terry

The DFA 150-450 is the best for birds in flight, but I reckon the DA*300 + 1.4xTC is a better choice if light is not 100% but the lack of zoom can be an issue.

Cheers,
Terry
