Resurrecting Pentax firmware hacking

I am not big fan sacrificing K-01 at this stage as I love this yellow buddy :-)

One strange thing I see is 12MB xor decryption key.

As I understand it is obtained by xoring dumped firmware with encrypted one.

As far as I remember Pentax did not change algorithm for ages. So it can be good idea to add K30/K50 to my tool (as K-01 is present)

Hi!

Let me know if you need any help from the guy who started all this Pentax hacking :-)

I have K-01, so can have some personal interest.

So, for now it is only model id change and reencryption?[COLOR="Silver"]

I think you are talking about EEPROM, not firmware in post.

My tool for decryption of firmware is at pentax-tool [Personal View FAQs Wiki]

Otherwise invite to http://www.personal-view.com , we can discuss stuff.

Real reason for lack of SR is noise, not power consumption or such. As most people just record sound using build in mikes and they pick up SR noise. Hence people report to service about issues. :-)

Thing here can be misleading translation. As hi speed can be just translation from high speed, meaning that it uses 5Gb/s. As not all tech writers know about weird terms used in USB specs.

And, of course, it makes absolutely zero sense to make USB 3.0 if you have USB 2.0 speed.

I concur with your doubts regarding AF capabilities, but if the K-3 it has
really good focus peaking, that would be sufficient for
me..

Today any good video monitor has peaking and many other stuff. And you need one most of the time anyway.

No one will be outputting any raw via HDMI, it was just someone fantasy.
And it seems like sensor is just unable to output more than 1080p30 (or i60).

OTG or not is not very important. That is important is contact Ricoh and establish real USB port speed tests using bulk transfer of big chunks (without using any SD cards and such). To understand real limitation of processor and interface used.

ORG will be good to have in future firmware, but for now someone need to flush management and describe to them clear target. I mean here - providing full use for hardware they have.

Yep. This is that I mean. So it is not really anything big to have it at 4K.

Other modes seems to be still lacking, as well as build in mono mike.

Yes. Now we need clear explanation how it works.

As I understand interval is interval between stills, and recording time just defines total resulting movie length. So it is bunch of MJPEG stills to make timelapse video

This post contains hidden content

I have huge doubts that they work well. You can check D7100 to get ideas about AF performance.

AF in latest Canon work well, but it is due to their unique sensor.

Again, RAW is for stills :-)

Internal 4K is interesting, but what are restrictions, format? Or they just mean 4K timelapse from still shots here?

May be. We will see. If it is really fast, as I said, it can be significant. But again, it is best for them to understand it themselves. Like making support for fast external storage and enabling raw and lossless video.

This slightly contradicts with "hi-speed" in specifications. And it is most important point. If it is, indeed, super speed USB 3.0 and processor is up to the task, K-3 in future could record raw in video, may be :-)

@jogiba, thanks for providing link to P-V.

Thing is someone got it wrong from the spec list. Quality settings mentioned are for still images, not video. Video will be H.264. But double SD slots leave some potential.

USB 3.0 is big. I just do not understand the point for it on K-3 right now. As from the specs it is hi-speed, this means that it is just USB 3.0 connector with USB 2.0 speed.

Sincerely yours. Vitaliy Kiselev

As usually this guy do not understand anything that he writes.

I do not agree here with 'Canon rules" stuff.
Right now Canon is popular in video. But most of their solutions have serious problems and are slightly outdared (as internally use same sensor sice 7D).
Second is Panasonic with GH1 and hacked GF1.
Plus new GH2 outperforms every known vDSLR.
D7000 will be also quite good performer. But not up to Panasonic level.

If you want to ask something about video rigs, etc Just go to dvxuser.com and ask me or any other guys who shoot video regularly.

P.S. And no, video is not a gimmick in vDSLRs.

Not entirely :-)
But now I am busy with over projects.
Given free time I 'll look at GX20/K20D manual lenses related things.
I do not plan to look at K-x or K7.
Camera business is very fast moving one.
And worst thing is that Pentax lost Samsung support, and hence sensors.
Kx can be Pyrrhic victory.

It is interesting that most people do not understand how your constant petitions work.
Try to see Shawshank Redemption one more time, if you forgot :-)

"In 1966, Andy Dufresne escaped from Shawshank prison. All they found of him was a muddy set of prison clothes, a bar of soap, and an old rock hammer, damn near worn down to the nub. I remember thinking it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel through the wall with it. Old Andy did it in less than twenty. Oh, Andy loved geology. I imagine it appealed to his meticulous nature. An ice age here, million years of mountain building there. Geology is the study of pressure and time. That's all it takes really, pressure, and time. That, and a big goddamn poster. "

I am sorry to say, but photo features competition is over (in sub $2000 market).
And video features is new field.
And yes, they are going to get better, but slowly. Your money at stake, so marketing will prevail.

Interesting thing is that people seriously compare K7 and 550D at almost the same price :-)
If you throw video out of equation K7 is better in every known aspect.
And I am sure that main target will be video now.
We'll see Penatx and new Sony cameras using same sensor, sensor based IS, less noise, less noticable rolling shutter, and Canon will bite the dust.

They can just provide their intellectual algorithms (I believe they are very few) as object files with headers, not as complete source.
They also have big advantage as good free Windows based development environment is available for Fujitsu FR LSI chips.

Must such threads do not result in anything, and if you want results:

1) Buy good domain name "dslr-petition.com" :-)
2) Make good one page web form as title page, if you need consultancy on web forms design, I am ok to provide it.
3) Collect all petitions and show most popular at right part of title page.
4) Send every petition to every Pentax support email address, as well to every Penatx DSLR related stuff address.
5) You'll be amazed by result, they won't be instant but after two-three months things are gonna change.
