FA-J 18-35/4-5.6 vs Sigma 10-20/4-5.6?

Okay, didn't get to do it that night, and had to jump on a plane the next morning. Somewhat recovering from the jet lag now, and just snapped a shot (through a pretty clean window!).

Dropbox - IMGP9815.JPG - Simplify your life

That's the full-sized JPEG. If you want the RAW, I can upload it for you as well. 1/5", F4.0, ISO 800 at 18mm. It's no Limited lens, but for the price I paid, I think it's well worth the money :-)

Sorry was away for a bit and didn't see this till today. Most of the shots I've taken with it so far are group shots in the day. I'm going away again in a few days. Let me see if I can do a quick shot with it tonight and post it up for you.

I actually have the SIgma 10-20 and used it extensively on my K5 and K-01. When I picked up the K1, I a new FF UWA lens was out of my budget so I used the Sigma on it in Crop mode (and heavily-vignetted FF mode as well). It actually produced very good results, and worked just as well on the K-1 as it did the K5 & K-01. I also bought a new old-stock FA J 18-35 and used that on my last trip. The one thing I really like about it is that it is very light and is my poor-man's UWA lens for the K-1. IQ is not as good as the 10-20 in my opinion, but I literally paid $100 for it new, as opposed to the Pentax 15-30 which I really like, but costs 15x more here in Canada. For the kind of shots I like to take, the FA J 18-35 is the lens that's been on my K-1 the most.

Well, I got the email from the store today at 12:44 pm telling me it was available for pickup. I went after work and was informed by the gentleman serving me that mine was basically the last one they had processed for purchase. I just got home and checked it out - I wasn't aware that it came with a bag and a hood as well. I am not too familiar with the lens prior to this purchase, but it worked well. The build quality is reminiscent of the DA-L 18-55 although it does have a metal mount, and for $199, I really have no reason to complain - it IS a good deal. The paperwork says Pentax Canada and is dated 2006, which means it's been sitting on some shelf for 12 years! The only downside to this story (which I mentioned here as well New to the Group/Concerned about Pentax in Canada - Canadian Pentaxians - PentaxForums.com) is that the store is basically clearing out their Pentax stuff (which isn't a lot to begin with) - that means one less place to walk in and get a Pentax lens.

Dangit Hornet... you made my fingers accidentally click on Add to Cart. :-) I really do not need another 50mm lens, but I do not have a true Macro lens, so that's my excuse for this LBA attack.

I've bought stuff from Aden before, and their prices are usually slightly better than the other stores locally. They do not always carry the Pentax stuff I want but I did get my Sigma 10-20 from them as well as a monopod and other knick-knacks over the years. The main store in downtown Toronto seems to have pretty nice folks who were quite helpful the last time I went there - my experience with their other store in Markham wasn't quite as pleasant. :-/

Hope the order goes through, i.e. they still have stock.

Many Many thanks for all the great recommendations - one thing that struck me were the suggestions for messenger bags - I think I need to rethink that approach. I think I got mentally scarred off those the one time I was in Vegas with a messenger-like bag and it was knocked off the chair by a waiter. It cracked one of my old lenses' UV filter, but fortunately that lens was unscathed. Still mentally scarred though :-)

Yeah Aden is a bit of a hit/miss for me. I bought a Fuji from their smaller store in Scarborough/Markham many moons ago - worst experience ever in my life and swore I'd never go back. 3 years ago, I ventured into their store in downtown Toronto to order a Sigma 10-20. It had to be special ordered in, and when I went to pick it up, one guy there said to me "You guys are a rare breed". I took that as a compliment. My only thought was, at least they carried K-mount lenses.

Yeah I figured that might have been the case when I first asked them where things were after the first week. When I ordered it, ithe website showed 4 days delivery or something like that. The response after the first week was that it'd take 5 - 10 business days. I asked again on Day 11 and was told the same thing, but that it was being shipped from another store.

By the end of the 14th business day, I was starting to wonder if the other store the camera was coming from was in the Yukon :D

Great to hear another fellow Canuck scoring a deal on the K-1. I ordered the same kit over Christmas when Henry's had a "sale" on ($75 off purchases >$600), and got the same package, but that one involved a looong 3-week wait (even though the page at the time of ordering said it was in stock).

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far - I'll check out each one of them see and see which might work.

Actually, the notebook I have is a tiny one. I initially had a 13" macbook but as my gear increased (there's that GAS again!), I moved to a hybrid tablet/keyboard combo that's 12" in size. My full CaseLogic 206C is under 10 lbs, as per airline requirements, which helps me to decide what to bring or not bring. Outside of airports and airplanes, I do use it when I'm out and about sans the tablet and the batteries/ charger/ extra lenses. I also use a walkabout shoulder sling bag when I'm out in the town doing street photography, so what I'm looking for is definitely not a one-size-fits-all solution for all occasions.

I guess I should have initially said "a bag for traveling" - taking it through airports, and having it close to me under the seat, and when I'm at the airport or on the bus/train/boat, it's on my back. Forgot to add link to the bag I'm using now - https://www.amazon.ca/Case-Logic-SLRC-206-15-4-Inch-Backpack/dp/B002DW99H8 It's actually a very nice one.

@bigted - yeah adding a grip doesn't help at all. I've actually stopped bringing my camera grips with me when I travel solely due to weight and size considerations - it's one of the compromises I make.

I got a K-1 with a 28-105 two weeks ago and just realized that the two CaseLogic bags I have (originally purchased for the K-5 and 18-135) are a bit too small for it. The K-1 will not even go into the CaseLogic SLRC-205, and it is very tight in the SLRC-206. An Amazon reviewer said that the suspension system in SLRC-206 does not work for a full-frame camera at all, and had to remove it.

The draw for me for the CaseLogic bags is the suspension system itself, plus the fact that I can easily open the top to grab the camera (not to mention they are built well and don't cost a lot). I have traveled to several countries with the SLRC-206, which allowed me to store my K-5 with a lens, K-01, Q-S1 + spare lenses, batteries.. and a notebook. Does anyone have any recommendations for a similar bag that would allow me to do the same thing with a K-1?

I've already looked around the forum for similar suggestions but haven't seen anything that might work. In this thread What is a good camera bag for K-1 and three lenses?, the LowePro Sling 100 AW was mentioned, but it's a little too big, doesn't hold a notebook, and more importantly, doesn't allow me to take the camera out of the top of the bag when I'm cramped in the seats in the economy section of the plane :-)

DA lenses on K-1

Good point :) I just assumed that since it came in a kit with my camera it's a kit lens, but then the KP is also sold in a kit with the 20-40, and that's no "kit" lens. With my less-than-24-hours use, I can already say that its IQ is much better than the 18-135 on non-FF bodies. I didn't realize the DFA 70-300 was on the roadmap - yes it would definitely be a good thing if its quality is right up there with the 28-105.

Finally got my K-1 yesterday after three weeks of waiting, and had about 2 hours before bedtime to try out as many lenses as I could on it. I too went from a K-5 to a K-1 and I am stunned by the quality of the pictures on it in comparison to my old K-5 (and K-01). Even the 28-105 kit lens that I got with the K-1 has surpassed all my expectations. And just like kiwi_jono's observation, I found that while the 10-20 Sigma works well in crop mode it just didn't wow me like the other full frame lenses I have, both new and old. Since I've passed my K-5 on to my son, I would definitely think about getting another crop-body (K-01 doesn't have an OVF which I prefer) to use my non-FF glass on it, but I need some time for my wallet to heal first :-)

Picture Thread....Thrift Store and Yard Sale Finds , Deals , and Scores !

Totally agree with the sentiment - I get more gratification (finding and) spending $10 on an old lens than $500 on a new one. I don't personally get much luck in the few thrift stores I know of in my neck of the woods as any camera equipment there seems to be severely marked up to the point of being ridiculously priced.

Last weekend, I was looking to see if anyone had an old 135mm F2.8 for sale, and came across an ad for one. Turns out, it wasn't for the K-mount, but another two lenses that it came with were. Never mind the fact that I already have five other LBA-induced 28mm lenses, I drove an hour out to the countryside where the ad was listed and scored these for $20. Never heard of this brand before but both K-mounts were basically mint. This has got to be my best score so far. @.a.t. I think I may also have used up my good luck quota for 2018!

That is a good price - I came close to getting it there 2 nights ago, but the really crappy USD-CAD exchange rate and the fact that I'll lose out on one year's warranty getting it from the US meant shopping locally instead of importing it.

Thanks so much for your helpful response Norm. Yes, I definitely agree on 35 & 28 not being wide angle enough. I don't typically print my images either but that may change one day, so it's always good to know in advance.

I shoot almost anything for fun, but I tend to gravitate towards landscapes and low-light. I do have a 28mm Sigma 1.8 prime, but in hindsight maybe I should have bought a 24 or something. I've also held both the 15-30 and 24-70 mounted on a K1 but didn't get the chance to shoot with it - the one thing that immediately struck me was how heavy it was. I had climbed up a hill one time in Thailand with my K5 and 18-135 and was dying from the weight of that and the hot & humid weather, so I'm pretty sure I won't be climbing any mountains with the K-1 and either of those lenses any time in the future either!

Would love to see your FA-J 18-35 images too if you do get the chance to post it someday.

Update - After months and months of dithering, I just ordered the K-1 and 28-105. Dear God what have I done haha - this is the most $ I've ever plunked on camera equipment in one transaction.

Oh I was just pondering this exact same question last night - it must have been really late and I missed this post! Based on what Adam said, the D FA 28-105 would smoke the old FA lenses I have. I guess I was hoping against hope that the older lenses would be up to snuff :-) but I do recall using some of the other FA lenses on my K5 and the quality wasn't all that great, especially when shot wide open.

For the few I've contributed here, I usually go looking for the camera logo for the specific camera and try to find a high contrast picture, and reduce it to black & white. I do the same with the "Pentax" wording. For the picture of the camera itself I do the same, but keep it in its original colour. I usually start at a larger resolution, say 4 or 8 times larger the existing tag, to make it easier to work with, then when I'm quite satisfied with the results, shrink it back down to the size of the current tags. As a last step, I would 'steal' the "Proud Owner" part from existing tags and used it in the new ones because I couldn't find the same font separately.

Hope this helps.

DA lenses on K-1

Actually, I'm in a very similar situation now. I think the $100 bucks off and free grip offer is as good as the year-end sales are going to get for the K-1 and I am about to pull the trigger on getting it. It's still a fair bit of change for me, and that's why I'm debating if I should get the kit with the 28-105 as well. Almost every comment I've read here says it's good. I have an older Pentax-F 35-105mm f/4-5.6 - is it safe to assume that IQ wise, it's far inferior to this new one? I know the focal lengths are not identical (I also have two versions of the Pentax-FA 28-80). If quality is close, I might cheap out and save the $400 difference and just get the K1 body only.

Unlike Docbot, I don't have any Limiteds, but do have a few FF and APS-C lenses in my collection. My most used lens while traveling was the DA 18-135 on my K5, and when I got a K-01, a Sigma 10-20 tagged along with it. Most recently, I picked up the Sigma 17-50 2.8 from Japan and I actually like it a lot more than the 18-135. I also bought a new old-stock FA-J 18-35 in anticipation of this day when I would contemplate the jump to FF and need a UWA lens. Norm, how would you rate that lens IQ on the K1 in FF mode? Would I be better off using my Sigma 10-20 in Crop mode?

Interesting. I noticed the same deal on Camera Canada (Camera Canada :: Pentax :: K-1 Full Frame Body Black). Have not dealt with either Camera Canada or BJPhoto before, but they look legit. I actually first stumbled on another deal at CC for the K1 + the 28-105 (Camera Canada :: Pentax :: K-1 Full Frame with 28-105mm Lens Black) that also included the grip.

Since I just gave both my K-S2 and K-5 to my kids, I've been looking to move up to another body. The mythical K3-II replacement is nowhere to be seen and I'm not really wowed by the KP, so the K1 kit-lens combo is a bit tempting.

Good to hear that it works fine on the K-1. I picked this up new old-stock about 2 years ago for around that price, thinking I'd get me a K-1 some day and use that as a dirt-cheap UWA lens. Sadly, that some day hasn't arrived yet :-/
