Item for Sale
Sigma 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 APO DG lens

Asking Price
$165

Item Location
Munfordville, Ky

Item Description
This lens is optically in mint condition with no dust, scratches, or fungus. The only thing which keeps me from listing it as like new is very minimal signs of usage on the barrel itself. No dents, dings, or scratches, mind you, but a careful inspection show it has been used. In my opinion this lens has never gotten the respect it deserves. Perhaps I just got a good copy, but I've been very pleased with the quality of images it produces all the way from 70-300mm, and it's great for doing "macro" photography as well. Included are the front and rear lens caps, the lens hood, and the carrying case all in the original box.

Item for Sale
Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 lens for Pentax

Asking Price
$275 USD

Item Location
Munfordville, Ky.

Item Description
This lens is the older 17-70 which means it does not have OS (which isn't needed on a Pentax camera anyway) nor does it have the HSM focusing. It is a great lens, nevertheless, and in three years of shooting with a K10D I'm quite sure I used it more than all my other lenses combined. Optically it is in like new condition with no dust, fungus, scratches, etc., and there are no dents or dings on the barrel itself. If you look hard, however, you can tell that it has been used. Included are the front and rear lens caps and the lens hood. This is a great walk-around lens with "macro" capability, and I've no doubt that whoever purchases it will be happy with it.

Item for Sale
Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 lens for Pentax

Asking Price
$600

Item Location
Munfordville, Ky.

Item Description
This is a mint-condition lens with very little use. I've recently switched systems, and no longer have a use for it. Included are both lens caps, the tripod mount, lens hood, carrying case, and the original box it all came in. The lens, original invoice from B&H, warranty papers, etc., are already packed in a box ready for shipping or I would attach pictures. If that's the only thing stopping you from buying I can unpack it and e-mail pictures to you in a private message.

Item for Sale
Pentax AF-360 FGZ flash

Asking Price
$165

Shipping Destinations
United States

Item Description
This flash is in perfect working order, and would qualify as mint except that I do not have the original container/paperwork, and I have disabled the locking pin on the base of the flash which not infrequently causes the flash to become stuck on the camera. This in no way effects either the way the flash functions or how it stays in the flash shoe. It's just no longer capable of causing a frustrating problem. Buy it at this price, and I'll include a Sto-Fen omni bounce which softens the light from the flash. These list on B&H for $17. No add-on charges for shipping or using Paypal. Thanks for looking.

Item for Sale
Pentax SMC FA 50mm f/1.4 lens

Asking Price
$250 USD

Shipping Destinations
United States

Item Description
This is the highly touted FA f/1.4 50 mm lens which is great for low-light shooting. Both the optics and the barrel are blemish free and look just as they did when I purchased the lens new. My only reason for selling is that I've gone over to the "dark side" (Canon), and am disposing of most of my Pentax gear. If you've checked out what this lens is currently selling new for, you know this is a real bargain.

Back- focusing Tamron 70-200 f/2.8

If I understand the K10 debug correctly, it adjusts the focus the same amount on every lens you use, kind of a global fix in other words. My other lenses seem to be spot on, and I wouldn't want to sacrifice the quality of several to improve it in only one. Am I correct, or has someone come out with a debug which can be used only individual lenses without having a global effect?

Back- focusing Tamron 70-200 f/2.8

I purchased this lens new a few months ago, but have only begun to use it in low light, i.e. f/2.8, conditions. It's quite obvious that the lens has a serious back focusing problem, and as I'm still shooting with a K10D I have no way of correcting this myself. I guess my question has to do with how much correction can be done in the lens, as in sending it back to Tamron, and how much can be done in camera, as in upgrading to a new K-7. I'm giving serious thought to upgrading, but after downloading RAW files from Imaging Resources and running them through Imagenomics noiseware pro I confess that I'm leaning toward the new EOS 7D which, in my opinion, has at least one stop better high ISO performance. Moreover, most of the reviews I have read say that although the K-7 has improved AF performance it's still not up to par with the Canikons. High ISO performance and continuous autofocus tracking are the two main criteria in my deliberations. I can't see buying a K-7 just to correct this one lens which I'd like to keep along with my K10D, and for a while at least, be a two system shooter. I'm interested in the experience of those of you who have dealt with this problem through Tamron service. Thank you.

I find these last few posts very interesting and also a little confusing. I've read numerous posts stating that even a technically bad photo can look good when viewed on a computer screen at its low resolution. I've also read several which claim that a printed photo will look better than the monitor version of a noisy picture. Considering noise only and disregarding any other factors affecting image quality, which is going to look better, the monitor version or a similarly sized printed picture? (Understand I'm not talking about a 4 x 6 inch print.)

I saw where he said he would use ISO 3200 only if the only alternative were no picture at all. Is that how K-7 users feel?

AF useability?

What about using shake reduction when taking photos of fast moving events when AF-C is being used? It seems to me that in such situations where a fast shutter speed is of necessity being used anyway that the use of shake reduction might actually be detrimental because the shutter could very easily be opened before the SR mechanism has settled down, resulting in a blurred image. Thoughts/comments?

Nice series. Thanks for posting. Did you use AF-C, center focus or what? Certainly the posted images are in nice, sharp focus. What about your success rate? 50% or better? I didn't see any panning shots where the background was intentionally blurred to enhance the feeling of speed. Did you try any? I hope you don't mind my asking so many questions, and do appreciate your taking the time to answer.

Rant about Pentax's One Legged AF and a weird quirk that I wish would go away

With the K10D at least, with "AF with shutter button half-pressed" turned off in the custom setup menu the shutter will open in AF-S whether in focus or not. My only wish is that depressing the AF button would wake the camera out of sleep mode instead of having to press the shutter button to do so.

I agree 100% with your sentiments about the lack of importance of the entire business, and I too am still pondering about purchasing a K-7. I guess this is what has us both searching for that statistic or bit of information that will sway the balance one way or the other. :D

What Camera Digital K-7 REVIEW (Take Two)

What I saw said simply "User Rating". This was beside a section where one could share the review with someone else. At no place that I found did it say to "Rate this review". I think it's reasonable to assume when it says user it's referring to someone who is already using a K-7 rather than someone who is using the review. That's obviously subject to interpretation, but it makes little sense to me for someone already using a K-7 to be rating a review of it. If they already own the camera, then as far as they're concerned it's a done deed. If, in fact, the user rating is a rating of the review, however, than to place it beside WDC's review of the camera is misleading to say the least. I'm referring here to the page which comes up when you compare the K-7 with another camera and not the page which opens when you click on the above address. Check it out, and see what you think.

Er, I'm not so sure about the user rating being a rating of the review rather than the camera. In going back to the website and looking again it appears to me that they're asking for a review of the camera. I noticed that the user rating is now up to 90%, but this is with only 14 responders. The earlier results were apparently skewed down because of the even smaller number.

Interestingly, WDC gives the K-7 a rating of 88% while it gets a user rating of 70%. Unfortunately I didn't find any information regarding how the user rating was obtained. The K20D had a WDC rating of 88% also, but it had a user rating of 100%. Probably meaningless, but interesting nevertheless.

Radu:

You may very well be correct. Imaging Resource doesn't go into detail as far as I can tell on how they conduct the test, and my inability to read German prevents me from digging into their article. IMHO the figures shown in Color Foto are probably more realistic than the ones in Imaging Resource which shows the K7 with a full AF shutter latency of 93 milliseconds and the D300 with a latency of 227 milliseconds. I think everyone agrees that the K-7 is Pentax's best effort yet to achieve a competetive AF speed, but I've heard no claims that it's blazingly faster than the D300. One thing I find interesting about the CF test is that in 10EV light their results show the K-7 at 390 milliseconds to be slower than the K20D at 280 ms whereas at 3.5 EV the K-7 is much faster than the 20D. Another anomaly, or so it seems to me, is where they show the Canon 50D with a faster focus at 3.5 EV (260 ms) than it has at 10EV (280ms). I think this is highly unlikely, particularly when the other four cameras take at least 50% and in the case of the 20D roughly 300% longer to focus in the low light. FWIW, Pop Photo in their test of the D300 showed an AF speed of 330 ms at 10EV and 720 ms at 3 EV. Similar figures for the K20D were 360 ms and about 1000 ms respectively. For the EOS 40D (for some reason they never got around to doing a full test on the 50D), the times were about 390 ms and 560 ms respectively. These numbers certainly correlate much better with those from Color Foto than with the impossibly (?) low numbers from Imaging Resource. I suspect that these numbers don't tell the entire story about a camera's autofocus ability, however, because based on both sets of data the 50D should out-shoot the D300, and based on the frequent grumbling I've read on DPreview's Canon 50D forum site the feeling there seems to be that it doesn't. I've decided that my best bet for now is to keep shooting with my K10D until the dust settles, so to speak. I've really nothing to lose and with the release of the D300s and probably the 50D's video-capable successor prices for the older D300 and the 50D will probably have dropped along with (hopefully) that of the K-7.

Thanks for the link, Radu:

Unfortunately I find the information contained therein more confusing than enlightening, because there seems to be absolutely no correlation between the times listed in the German magazine and those listed by Imaging Resource. Surely with such a wide discrepancy there must be something I'm missing???

These are, indeed, very impressive numbers (found on the Imaging Resource website), and have me leaning heavily toward the K-7 as an upgrade to my present K10D. I've been thinking seriously about the D300, on the basis of faster continuous AF, but these numbers don't seem to justify the extra cost involved. The main question that comes to my mind has to do with the conditions under which the various tests were done. Assuming they were done with good lighting, the results cannot necessarily be extrapolated to low light. I think I'll wait until Popular Photography Magazine comes out with their test results which show AF speed at light levels from EV 12 down to EV -3. I think for my purposes (shooting high school basketball in a poorly lit gymnasium) those results would be more meaningful. I hope they release something in the next couple of months.

Richard & Kunik: Thanks for posting your samples of the K-7 in action in AF-C.

Mel: Congratulations on your win.

One question to the three of you: I seem to recall having read somewhere that the K-7 slows to about 2 fps when using AF-C in burst mode. Does that sound about right? I don't know which is better (or worse?). Getting 50% in focus at 2 fps or 20% in focus at 5 fps. I guess it's the old "Is the glass half full or is it half empty" quandry.

It's been five weeks now, and despite scouring this site and the Pentax section on dpreview daily, I've yet to see any action shots with the K-7 proving its AF-C ability. I've seen Falk's test on his blog site and have followed Bunny Gear's thread about AF-C of K-7 being a marketing trick, but so far that's been about it. Surely in this length of time someone has given it a try????
