OK looks like we have a winner. We went out yesterday evening after a cold and blustery day and she took a K3 with battery grip, the 16-50 and the 60-250 in a small backpack. Changed lenses a couple of times with no problems. Says she likes the 16-50 and would probably use it 90% of the time and just take the 60-250 just in case she wants a long zoom and didn't think it was too heavy.

I'll stick with my K1 with 24-70 and in my backpack have the 15-30 and the 70-200.

Cheers

Excellent thanks all for your replies. I think the best advice is to do what Uncle suggests and look at the popular focal length of the pictures taken. Never even thought of the 55-300! Will take a look at it. The key is getting her to change lenses with confidence then I have a bag full of primes she can consider.

Cheers

Sorry - price isn't a factor. I have some older lenses as well but don't want to make things too heavy I'll get her to try your suggestion. Also if I can get her to be able to change lenses with confidence I could pair the 60-250 with the 16-50.

Hello, I'm looking for some advice.

My wife currently uses a Pentax K5 IIS with a Pentax 18-270 lens. Now although she likes the variability of the focal length she is starting to get a bit more adventurous in the shots she takes and is becoming a little frustrated with the speed of the lens, both from an aperture and how long it takes to focus. Now she has tried the same lens with a K3 and that doesn't seem to help and has tried my 16-50 F2.8 which is much better but don't give her the all in one focal range.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which lens might help. It doesn't have to be fully 18-270, something a bit shorter, probably at the long end might suffice. But as long as it's a bit faster focussing than the 18-270.

Cheers

Hello, I was just sorting through all of my Pentax accessories and came across an unopened box with a K-AC50U kit. I searched the forums and found it will work with K10, K20 and K7, but does anyone know if it will work with a K3 and K1?

Cheers

Well if you buy what's on sale now its a sure thing that Pentax will announce a new model :-) However the K3 and K3II are still great cameras and B and H has a good deal on at the moment with a K3II and battery grip.

I'm lucky and have two K3 bodies, one the prestige edition. I think the K3 is still a darned good camera and I got mine when it was first released. B and H seem to have a good deal on a K3 II with a battery grip. I use my K1 for most photography but I still drag around the K3 which is either attached to the 150-450 or the 300 and 1.4 TC.

I really do like that picture, it shows so much going and the natural expressions of the people around the dancer. Herself being front and centre is also the source of the interest of the others and not seeing her face adds to the overall balance.

I'm currently stuck in the middle trying to learn a bit more about composition and light but just get a bit too excited when I get out there with the camera.

Anyone got their Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II APO EX DG Macro HSM rechipped?

I had mine done and they changed the mount and the motor in the lens. Sadly it still freezes on the K1 but works fine on all my other Pentax bodies. I suspect I will have to wait for a pentax firmware upgrade and hope they dress the issue. For reference it is the 70-200/2.8 APO DG EX Macro II HSM

Love the photo's but IMHO ruins them for someone to be in it. A matter of personal taste I suppose.

I really have to disagree! Bad batch = poor quality. You must have been lucky with yours. I revert to the type I know and trust, plus they are cheaper.

So am I, must be the quality as I have used others (Promaster) on my two K3 screens and K5II with no problems and will probably go back to this brand once they make one that fits the K1.

OK I've worked it out. I have instant review turned off, turning it on will give me the 4 frames in pixel shift. So everything normal.

Thanks

K1 Pixel Shift

Whilst I'm still getting my head around this I seem to remember a video about this, but can't find it. The video shows the K1 in a garden setting and the user of the pre production model tries taking a photo in pixel shift. The LCD display on the back of the camera shows 4 different images and then the final version. On my K1 after I take the photo all I get is a progress bar and a flashing "processing" message.

Perhaps its because I'm not using live view or maybe need to adjust some settings. Any one else noticed this?

Pentax K-1 and Sigma 70-200mm F2,8 EX DG OS HSM works nicely

Regarding the 70-200 F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II, I spoke to Brian at Gentec (Canadian Sigma Rep) about this lens and he informed me that as far as he is aware and he crossed referenced this on his system there is not a firmware upgrade for this lens. Other notes include as far as he is aware full compatibility with all Pentax cameras, we did chat about the K1 and I told him of the issues I'm having.

Maybe it is wait until Pentax update the firmware on the K1.

That's good news. Hopefully a K1 firmware update may get my older one working. I'm still going to inquire with Sigma about getting a firmware update for the lens.

K1 first impressions?

Well after a couple of days with my K1 and limited shooting time I feel quite comfortable with the camera. The menu system is very good and I agree the viewfinder is very bright and I really like the information in the display, it's there but doesn't intrude. My biggest pleasing aspect is that I can use the DA* 60-250 in full frame mode and don't seem to have any issues with dark corners, likewise my DA*300. However, using the 1.4 adaptor does give a lot of vignetting in FF mode but of course works well in crop mode.

I think I found a bug! My new DFA 15-30 F2.8 does not show up in Lightroom CC, not sure if that is a LR thing of a Pentax thing. All the other lens show up correctly, it's just the one.

Yes this is now starting to piss me off, although I said it didn't matter. The 70-200 focal length may be very busy on the K1. However I do have the 60-250 and I'll see what sort of quality I get with this lens in crop mode. By the way I can confirm the Sigma 150-500 lens works on the K1.

Although I'm tempted to try out the Tamron 70-200 as my dealer has a few left at a good price.

K1 in use! Canada

Just picked up my K1 minus the battery grip, that will arrive in 2 - 3 weeks. No big deal!
Anyway first impressions are good, menu system is very intuitive and am getting used to those extra dials.

I can confirm the freeze reported with the Sigma 70 - 200 F2.8 HSM II, but it works on my K3 so not the end of the world.

Another interesting issue is when you do pixel mapping. My K1 does it and shows the progress bar and flashes "data being processed" and then about 75% of the way it says EXIT and then the camera freezes showing the menu and I have to pop out the battery (fully charged) and when I pop it in again all is well. It did this a couple of times and now I have changed the battery with another fully charged Pentax one and now it seems OK. Can someone else with a K1 please try this so I can find out if it is just my camera or a more general issue.

I will report as I use and get used to the camera.

By the way is their any route to report these problems to Ricoh or does Pentax Forums report this?

Cheers

How do you decide which kit to take out?

For me it's the 16-50 and the 60-250 with the 1.4 convertor. If I'm feeling fit I'll take both K3 bodies with one lens on each. But sometimes I do like the challenge of taking out a few primes and these would be 15, 31 and 77.

DFA* 70-200 f2.8 price

Interesting about the price drop! I have a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 non-stabilized version and also a Sigma 150-500 stabilized, I'm hoping both will work nicely with the K1. Only perceived disadvantage is that the 1.4 teleconverter doesn't work unless one is in manual mode.
