Hello ChristianRock

Have you tested Aurélian Pierre’s “basic semi-automated style”?
For me it works great and has speeded up my processing too.

In his own words it’s «a basic darktable style to apply to get a “lightroom-like” (in the spirit, not in the result) base look with a generic filmic setting that mimics the original OCIO filmic (which is a pre-computed LUT, not a parametric tool)».

One can get the style in: Basic semi-automated style for darktable 3.0/filmic - darktable - discuss.pixls.us

And also follow a more then 2 hour youtub film where he demonstrates how to use it with practical examples (interpolated with technical explanations when needed), in:

You Tube

Hi gump

My advice is to go with Silver Efex Pro.

Also there is no need to buy it as the “old” free version can still be had, and it’s supposed to still be compatible with Affinity Photo.

If you find a problem of compatibility, any of the plug-ins of Nik Collection can be used a standalone programs.

One of the places to obtain it is the Internet Archive: NIK Collection of Filters (Mac/Windows) 1.2.11 : Google/NIK : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive.

My advice is, go with the Sony a7ii if you can find one around your budget.

For the Pentax lenses my advice is for you to get a “dumb” connector like this: Fotodiox Lens Mount Adapter with Aperture Control: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo.
It will let you use any Pentax lens with or without aperture ring.

For the beginners (and more advanced users too) my advice is to check (and follow) the extraordinary work of two Darktable users are doing, posting small, simple but detailed information about the functionalities and tools of Darktable on youtube.

They are:
Bruce Williams

You Tube

and
HPBirkeland
HPBirkeland Photography - YouTube

One of the best part about these two situations is the presentation in a systematic way of types of editing – noise reduction, sharpening, using masks, etc… -, showing many times in detail, all the possibilities available in Darktable for each type of editing - and everybody, who uses Darktable knows that there are, normally, several different tools available to do one type of editing.

For noise reduction I have found that this youtube movie:

You Tube

to be quite informative / impressing about the possibilities of denoising in Darktable (specially relating to high iso denoising).

Relating to speeding Darktable I also have found that turning off all denoising modules used in a photo and just activating them before outputting the final image I get the fastest responding Darktable.
Still, for processing my K-S2 files, I have to use this tip just once in 200 photos or so (2016 generation i5 laptop with 6 gigs of ram and 1 terabyte of HD), so Darktable 2.6.1 is fast enough for me as it is.

Do I NEED a full frame camera? (Please help with arguments either way...)

For the interior photo taking with low light, my advice is:

1 – learn how to use flash better, as you say “I have a flash, Pentax AF-360FGZ, and I never really bothered to master it: I just push the mode button and the power button all the way to the right, angle it upwards a bit to get a bounce off of the ceiling, and shoot. I'm never happy with the photos”.
You already have a good flash and can use it on and off camera, in PTTL, Auto or manual (your choice).
An outstanding free place to have many of the tips necessary is: ? Flash Photography Techniques.

2 – lower your aperture and shutter speed as much as you can. In your 6400 ISO shot, if you managed to lower to 1/40 and f/4.0, you could have used ISO 1600.

To the question: “Do I NEED a full frame camera?”

No, you do not.
But… and if you decide to stay with APS-C…, wait until the new Pentax camera comes out – it looks it will be a bomb -, and buy it (one of the main improvements to be expected is even better high ISO performance).

Camera bags - problems and your solutions

I have it on my left side like a holster, and I have no problems with my arms swinging when I walk.
The few times I have moved it to a more center position (it’s easy to do so), I find I’m “jumping up” the bag with my left leg every step I make, which is something I do not like, so I just return it to the holster position.

Not correct!

What is out is the first release candidate of Darktable 3.0 - “darktable 3.0.0rc0”.
To get the full information about the new stuff (the new stuff is huge!) and access to the installation files for the several operating systems go to darktable 3.0.0rc0 released | darktable.

The final full 3.0 version should be available around Christmas – last year it was in the 24th of December.

I stand by Darktable (windows) - I use it for all my raw processing, including noise reduction.

Another option is, if you still can lay your hands on it, Nik Collection (I use the old free version).
Dfine2 is my go by for extreme noise reduction necessities when Darktable is not enough.

How do you select photos?
Posted By ddharriman

I look to them one by one.

First I try to find the ones that click to me - the “the moment” ones when taking “candids” per example…
From these, I choose the ones who are technically better - sharp is a must, composition is a must too…
The rest I dump.

Normally, I can shoot 100 to 300 photos in a session and it’s not uncommon to keep just 2 or 3.

If I have a clicking and sharp photo but missing on the other technical points, sometimes I go the extra mile to try to salvage it… thus the importance, nowadays, to be at ease with post processing (spending the extra time to learn the raw processing software one uses).

How has printing affected your photography (if it has)?

It made it all possible = it was by seeing my first print emerge on the darkroom that the photography bug bitted me and I was hooked forever.

In the beginning of 2016 I changed the way I was looking into photography, as it was from embracing the digital (1996), almost no prints happened.
So I changed my final goal of having a photo I liked (until then) to a potential print I liked – this changes everything, as to taking a photo to appear as a print needs (at least for me) a new / different approach,

In reality, I still just print 1 to 2% of my keepers (who by themselves are just 2 to 3% of what I normally soot), but, my keepers are now somehow different from the ones I got before 2016.

My advice to everyone who does not print: do it, at least in A4 format (preferably bigger), and, if not else, put them in your walls… look to them, have other people look to them… it will grow on you…
