That is an amazing photo! Love the scene & the composition. I'm going to try & photograph it myself tonight. Any tips re camera settings? I'll be using my 200mm F2.8 so reckon that my shutter should be no more than 2.5 seconds.

Thanks,
Ducky

Astro Astrophotography - 1st Attempt

Thank you all for the kind replies. The quality of the photos in my first attempt is a true reflection of the amazing advice that is provided on these forums.

Questions – If I were to attempt to edit the photos, what do you reckon I should do? Please keep it simple as I have almost zero experience with post processing. Also, is there any free software that you reckon I could use? Or any Pentax software that I can dig up? I’m really keen to see how much better the photos can get with post processing so if any of you want to have a go with the photos I posted then please go ahead.

Thanks
Ducky

Astro Astrophotography - 1st Attempt

Hi All,

I finally made my way up to Wales & found a reasonably isolated spot on a somewhat cloudless night & tried astrophotography for the 1st time. I followed the amazing advice that was given to me in THIS THREAD (thank you :D) & the results are below. These were shot in RAW, using my Pentax KP & Pentax 15mm F4, no astrotracer. All of them were 30 second shutter, ISO 3200 (2nd one is 1600) F5. I have done zero post processing.

So what do you think? Any feedback? What could I have done better? Do you reckon that I should have used different settings? I played around with the ISO but felt that the 4 images below were the best ones. Also, how much better do you think I could make these images with post processing? Please note that I don't own Photoshop or Lightroom? I have no idea what the scale of improvement is with post processing or how to go about it so any basic advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Ducky

Thanks! I'll have a read through those.

Would still really like to see what kind of photos you could potentially get without an astrotracer & using the equipment I listed above (or similar).

Hi All,

I wanted to try my hand at some basic astrophotography (stars & Milky Way), but am pretty clueless as to the technique. I have taken photos of the Northern lights in the past & was wondering if the same rules apply? Note that I am able to go to places with minimal light pollution.

Also, I don't own an astrotracer, but have mentioned my current rig below. What potential does the below equipment have with astrophotography? Does anyone have any examples of astrophotos they have taken with the below (or similar) equipment?

KP
HD 15mm F4
DA 200mm F2.8
DA 18-135mm F3.5-5.6
Tripod
Shutter remote

Thanks!

Ducky

I tried this but the converted images are only 1024 X 768 resolution & the quality is pretty terrible. Am I doing something wrong?

Matt thanks for that, I think that's probably what I need. However, are you able to please share the link for the Windows 10 version? The one that you shared is for Windows 7.

Thanks,
Ducky

Hi All,

I recently got myself a KP & have been shooting in RAW, but I can't open the PEF files on my Windows PC. I don't do any major post processing & hence don't own Photoshop or Lightroom. How can I open the PEF files on the Windows photo viewer? Is there a plugin that I can download or do I need a special program to view them? If the latter then could you please recommend one that's free?

Thanks,
Ducky

Where to buy the K-1 in UK

Hi All,

I live in UK & am looking for a good deal on a brand new K-1. I noticed that B&H is selling it for $1900, which equates to about 1400 (which I would be willing to spend), but when I look on UK websites (SRS, for example), it's on sale for 1999. That's a massive disparity. I would have ordered it on B&H but then I think that customs, duty & shipping would take it out of my budget. Am I missing something, or does anyone know a retailer in the UK that is selling the K-1 (brand new body only) for around the same price as B&H?

Cheers,
Ducky

Worth waiting for the K-3II Successor?

Hi All, I'm going travelling in November this year & need to have a new camera body by then as my K-30 needs to be replaced. Do you reckon that there is a possibility that Pentax will release a successor to the K3II by then? If yes then I will wait until the beginning of November. If not then I will get the KP.

Note that the KP would be best suited for me from the current lineup as its low light performance is a major advantage for me.

Cheers,
Ducky

Hi All,

I'm keen to upgrade my K-30 body to a K-P but have one major hurdle - The wife. We buy all our equipment together so I need to convince her that it's worth the . All the technical jargon wont make any sense to her so I was wondering if anyone is in current ownership of a K-30 & a K-P or K-3II? If yes then do you think it would be possible to please PLEASE post a similar pic taken by your K-30 & by your K-P/K-3II using the same lens? Apologies for this, I know its a lot to ask

Thank you :)

Thank you all for your very informative replies. It sounds like a new body would definitely be worth my while. I have a few questions on that but I think I'll start a new thread after doing some initial research.

Cheers,
Ducky
