I think you should go color for both of these shots. They are amazing shots to begin with, but the striking colors really make these images "pop". The cool blues, warm yellows, and "old" browns/grays really help tell the story of these pictures in my opinion.

Just logged in today to see that four (yes, FOUR) more of my pictures were accepted! I still have a few pending review, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for those too...

One of my favorite pictures. I'm glad this one made it.

PPG acceptance of images

I vote on them now too...

Anyone that has a photo accepted to the PPG gets to vote on the photos in the "general screening" phase of things... basically narrowing down the bulk of images to the best ones which will be shown to whoever Pentax uses as their "official" judges...

Even if a photo gets good votes from the general voters, it doesn't mean that the photo will get picked since Pentax ultimately has the final say in what photos get accepted.

Thanks, fevbusch!

All my previous cameras were point-and-shoots, so the Kx is my first dSLR and I am loving everything about it.

And yes, that was with the kit lens - I took it at the bug house at the San Diego Zoo, so the little guy was actually behind glass as well, making the shot even harder to get without glare/haze. The kit 18-55mm is actually a pretty capable close-up (not quite macro, but close) lens...

Nature Monterey Bay Aquarium (Lots of pics)

Thanks!

Shooting in an aquarium is certainly an exercise in patience - lol. Moving targets behind reflective glass (read: glare) definitely requires a lot of waiting for people to move out of the way so you can sneak in and get a good angle, and a lot of wasted shots due to weird reflections.

And while I still use auto-focus most of the time, I find that manual-focus is often the way to go so the camera doesn't try to focus on the glass instead of the fish.

It's an (obviously) converted truck that they took the seats, engine, etc. out of and put in the lion's cage. Apparently, it's his favorite place to hang out - which is lucky for me since it gave me a great photo op!

My girlfriend is a big Dodgers fan, so when I found out that they were going to be coming to town and the first game of the series was ON her birthday, I decided to kill two birds with one stone. Tickets to the game ended up being the perfect birthday present, and it gave me a chance to try out some action shots with the Kx...

(FYI, Dodgers swept the series.)

I ride motorcycles and there is a popular mountain near where I live that tons of sport-bikers swarm to every weekend. There are 3 or 4 photographers that set up off the side of the road in the good corners and wait for the bikers to make runs up and down the mountain and take photos of them mid-corner.

At lunch and towards the end of the day, they drive up to the cafe at the top of the mountain and hand out their business cards/web sites to all the riders to go to and get pics of themselves riding.

When you go to the site, you scroll through pages of the 100's of pics these guys took that day, find you and click it for a low-res sample and to buy the high-res image. Same sort of idea you explained above.

There definitely is a market for it in this area, since these 3 guys compete against each other, and each one must be making enough to make it worth their while to come out every weekend...

A collaboration would be a cool idea since various photographers would be getting lots of different shots of lots of different activities... If the logistics could be easily worked out, it would be a neat idea to try!

Went to the Birch Aquarium today and got a few nice shots of the sea life. The tanks were a lot darker than I expected, but fortunately the high-ISO capabilities of the Kx came through for me, producing some sharp pics with little noise. Here's a few that I like the best.

Thinking of getting the DCR-150 to throw on the end of my 55-300 kit lens. Do you all just use the "universal" adapter that comes with it, or do you screw it on with step-down rings (looks like I would have to stack 3 rings)?

Also, I've heard the 150 is a lot easier to work with when just starting out with macro photography. Should I start with that and save the 250 for a later purchase, or just jump in with the 250 to start with?

Thanks.

I thought photographing flowers all day would get boring, but they have so many different varieties it kept the shots interesting for the whole time I was there. They also have a maze made up of bushes of the flowers in the last pic, so getting lost in there killed some time too...
