Tilt head on Pentax AF540fgz flash

Hi guys,

I need some advice on the issue I'm having with this flash unit.
I actually rarely use the flash and I was checking my gear as my holiday is coming up next week. I took out the flash from my bag and noticed that the tilt head no longer stays in place. It just droops down to 90 degree position, which means I can only point the flash directly at the subject.
The funny thing is the last time I checked it, it was fine and I never touched it since so it appears to have broke itself!
Has anyone had a similar issue with the tilt head not locking into position and if there are any easy fix for it? I would really like to avoid taking it into CR Kennedy (local distributor of Pentax gear in Australia) as they charge through the roof for repairs.

Thanks

Dump my *st DL for a better low light Pentax?

I recently upgraded from K100D Super to K-x and I can tell you I had similar thoughts as you. I really wanted to upgrade to something that has two dials and dedicated buttons because I was sick of digging through K100D's slow menu. I was therefore leaning towards K-7, but I couldn't swallow paying more for a camera that has inferior sensor to K-x. If it had the same sensor as K-x and retained all the other features, i would have gone for K-7.

Now that I have K-x, I can tell you that even though it doesn't have the second dial and dedicated buttons, you don't really miss them much. The menu system is a huge improvement over the older Pentax cameras and you can change most settings very easily via the LCD screen. I have never missed the LCD Top screen either, which K100D had.

I can understand your frustration as I decided to upgrade after taking photos on day out at an aquarium and massively struggling with the low light capability of K100D especially with metering and AF.
K-x can be had really cheap now and I would really recommend that you upgrade. Normally people say it's better to upgrade the lens, but I don't think that applies in your case or mine. K-x is such a huge improvement in every aspect over K100D or your *st DL. You will definitely feel that it was money well-spent.

If someone can figure this out, you're a genius...issue w/ wrong exposure for lens

Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm no expert, but metering has nothing to do with this mystery since both shots were taken in manual exposure mode.

I can't figure out why the two shots have different exposure.

Ok. After much consideration I bought vanguard Alta pro 263at with sbh-100 ball head. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it feels very solid and sturdy. The ball head is rated for 10kg load so I think it should be more than sufficient for my need. It was a close call but the biggest factor was the fact that I could buy it from a local shop rather than waiting 7-14 days for delivery. It should come in handy tomorrow as I'm planning to go to a flower festival.
Thanks for all your input

Thanks for the tips.
When you say the head I selected is a good one, which one are you referring to?

I do actually have a remoste release, which I bought off eBay a couple of years ago for peanuts. Can't remember now, but I don't think I paid any more than $20 and it works perfectly fine.
I'm now leaning heavily towards the Vanguard. It looks to be just as well built as 190XPROB, cheaper and I can get it from the shops rather than wait for delivery from ebay sellers. I could put it to a good use this weekend as I'm planning to go to a flower festival.

I heard good things about them too, but just can't see anyone who stocks them. I don't think they are easy to find in Australia. Buying tripod from US is a little pointless because most places charge around $100 for shipping to Australia. Not paying that much to ship a tripod worth $200.

Do you know of any online shop that ships to Australia at a reasonable cost?

Thanks

Yeah. rightly so. I know my gear isn't that heavy, but I want this tripod to last many years and who knows what I end up buying. lol
I may be being overly picky because I want this to be future-proof.

Following the advice, I just came back from the shops and it was interesting to hear the sales guy actually recommend the AT263 over 190XPROB. He actually happens to own 190XPROB and is going to get rid of it over AT263. He said the centre column adjustment is a lot more flexible, which is better for macro.

I was quite impressed with AT263 actually and it's a lot cheaper than 190XPROB.

I'm 182cm tall and I did read a few comments from users that 190XPROB is a tad too short, but then I also read from other users of similar height that they have no problem.

This is driving me crazy and I'm trying to keep my decision between these three as if I go off these three, i will start looking at million different options again.

I have looked into this, but it will blow my budget by a big margin.
I think any of the three tripod legs I am considering are actually sturdy enough for my needs. Actually 190XPROB is the weakest of them all and is rated at only 10lbs. The other two are rated at around double of that, but I guess I should also bear in mind that manufacturer specs are not comparable all the time.

Hi guys,

Long time browser of this wonderful forum but first time poster.
I have narrowed down my tripod choice to three, but I can't decide.
I have K100D Super and K-x, FA 50mm f/1.4, DA 16-45, DA 55-300, DA 18-55 kit lens, Raynox DCR-150 and AF540 flash.
I guess the heaviest setup will be K100D Super, DA 55-300 with raynox and AF540 flash.
I will be using the tripod for some portraits, plenty of landscape and looking to really focus on macro work too.
The three contenders are:
  • Vanguard Alta Pro AT263 with SBH-100 ball head AUD$225

  • Manfrotto 190XPROB with 486RC2 head AUD$270

  • Benro A-650EX with BH-2 ball head AUD$200

I can't get much user reviews on Vanguard or Benro unfortunately and it's making my decision more difficult. On paper at least, 190XPROB seems to be a distant last. Benro looks to be the most sturdy but that's just on paper.
I'm not concerned about the weight as none of them are overly heavy (already ruled out Slik 700DX because of weight). My main priority is a reliable head that won't droop after I tighten the knobs ruining my composition.

Can anyone please give feedback on any of these three tripods?
Vanguard is appealing because I can just pick it up from the shops today. The other two are from eBay.

Thanks
