help with lens

yeah you should try to buy the "flush" kind

here is the link to one which looks like the one you should buy (im not advocating that you buy this one from this vendor since it is kind of pricey and I think you can find a better deal if you look around, this vendor just happens to have a really good picture of it but! you can buy it from whom ever you like)

Pentax K-PK-Camera to Screw Mount(M42)Lens Adapter Ring - eBay (item 270249299520 end time Jun-26-08 19:00:48 PDT)

this other one is an example of one you should NOT and I emphasize NOT buy

M42 screw Lens to Pentax Pk K mount adapter - eBay (item 290239667591 end time Jun-23-08 23:45:00 PDT)

regardless of what the vendor tells you in the description, if you want to focus to infinity then buy the first kind.

hope this helps

I was pretty excited when I got mine lol

well it its the one that im thinking about which I think is the Takumar series, its going to have a screw mount so you should look into buying a k mount to screw mount m42 adapter once you get it, they sell them on ebay but make sure to buy a certain specific kind of adapter since there are some which dont let you focus to infinity.

about the lens itself its definitely a great lens, its really good wide open and like most lenses, stopped down it just gets better but like I said it is really good wide open and fast so thats what you should really be excited about.

quality wise all metal construction so its really high quality and optics wise of outmost quality also

for that price its a really good deal and at this point those lenses are starting to be kind of like collectors items since they were made during the sixties but that doesnt mean they are any less good than todays optics.

one other thing you should note is that the lens is all manual so the aperture and focus both have to be set manually but that just makes you feel like you are more involved in the picture taking process

so yeah hope you like it.

I have to agree with Zewrak with the point and click opinion on this one. I mean why would you try to get such a complicated camera such as a DSLR and not take the time to at least run your pictures through a quick RAW to JPEG program and fix them a little while ur at it. Specially if you have Light Room shooting raw is just about the same as shooting JPEG and your pictures will look infinitely better if you touch em up a bit so that is what having a DSLR entails. In order to really get the great pictures you get from a DSLR you usually NOT ALWAYS have to go through some kind of program have it be the Pentax supplied RAW workshop or Lightroom but thats just my opinion on that.

Pentax or Samsung?

one of the things that is always brought up in this discussion is the firmware updates and how often the companies have them available to the customer and its been agreed that Pentax not only has had more but has them more often compared to Samsung but besides that, the customer support and the warranty are also different since they are separate companies and some people have said that the pentax customer support is alot better.

K100d or K10d?

I think since you will be using the camera in a formal setting and you are a seasoned photographer, the K10D will not only give you better image quality to a certain extent but more features along with it. At the price at which it is now, I think the K10D is a much better deal than the K100D. I have both of them and in the end I think either of them will do an exceptional job in just about any setting but I prefer the K10D even though I use the K100D more often since not only is it more compact but I dont have to worry about it as much as the k10D. So they both have their own benefits in the end.

OWNED lol im jk but yeah you can uh wear sun glasses while your on the computer lol but in the end you should really just configure your monitor so that the way you touch up your photos its the same as if they where being physically printed. You can do that through Adobe Gamma or manually.

Here is a link to some pretty good instructions on how to set up your monitor.

Thinking of a GX20

one thing to consider, Samsung doesnt do as many version updates on its cameras like Pentax does. They also have a different customer support/warranty which some say isnt up to par with Pentax's. Something else to consider would also be its re-sale value even though I know some of you dont consider ever selling your cameras, those who do will get substantially less for their Samsungs than for their Pentax versions. But both cameras are the same so yeah.

I was wondering what the problems are with this lens because ive heard a buncha great things about it and some really bad things about it and how risky is it getting one. I also heard about there being a second generation of it and that it was greatly improved and if so how would I be able to acquire such a version and or how would I know that the one I get is the new version/generation of the lens.

Sports shooters K100d super

I think for sports you should go with the K10D since it has an unlimited Jpeg buffer and if you shoot RAW, it also shoots around 12 instead of the 3 or 4 that the K100D does. It also has weather proofing in case it gets kinda dustay if you know what I mean. Either way both are great cameras and you can still shoot sports with the K100D I just think you could get better results with the K10D.

Just for the record I happen to have both so im not as biased as I seem lol

K10D - GX10 Lenses

Yeah they pretty much are the same in every aspect except some very minor cosmetic differences, and the GX10 was only able to shoot one kind of raw type file instead of the two that the K10D was able to shoot. As for the grip, the Pentax grip does not fit the Samsung Gx-anything because of the said cosmetic differences but Samsung is said to be coming out with a grip of their own.

Here is a link to a brief discussion about the Gx20 and how it somewhat compares to the K20D

Thank you all for your awesome and some what comedic replies and ive come to the consensus that even though I really want one, I should still try it out a bit before "getting it" since most of you say "you either love it or you hate it" which to me seems like really good advice.

BTW, Mr RiceHigh, you should really stop writing about how Pentax is doing so bad and go actually take some pictures for a change. I mean you your self said "Also to my own surprise, I have already written 75 articles so far, which have been read by many people over the world. In fact, I have spent quite some valuable time of my life in preparing and writing those articles of mine." So yeah a little to much time B!tching and not enough time shooting. No offense btw.

Thank you so much for all your extremely quick responses and I really appreciate the feed back on the said topic. And I think I am going to buy is since you guys have practically convinced me it is as useful as it should be and that it in fact looks "freakn awesome" which is always a plus. Specially since I can get it for 104 $ from amazon right now.

I am a current K100d owner and will be getting a K10d if not tomorrow later this week. I was wondering if the grip is really worth getting and how useful you guys really find it (apart from the fact that it looks freakn awesome). Is having to carry the extra bulk of the grip worth the actual use of it?

Lol yeah its easy to install and Super Takumars are mearely the name Pentax used to give to its lenses before they went SMC PENTAX but I personally think and feel that the Super Takumar line was superior in both built and image quality. But yeah I HIGHLY recomend them and alot of people actually prefer old glass to newer lenses so yeah check it out and im sure youll find plenty to look at on ebay.

BTW about the adapter, its removable and easy to install so you can still use your kit lens on the fly if you still choose to do so. Choosing the right adapter is crutial so if you decide to go with the super takumars I'd be happy to suggest which adapter to get.

Awesome sounds like youll be having alot of fun. BTW congrats on choosing pentax you will not be disapointed. As for the lenses, I personally feel that you should go for Super Takumar lenses because not only are they of the highest quality but you can find them for very reasonable prices on ebay or at your local pawn shop. For example, you can probably get a 200mm Super Takumar f4 for about 100 bucks or even less ive seem them go for like 75 and its an awesome Medium-high telephoto lens the only problem is that its a prime and its a screw-mount lens but you can buy an adapter for lik 15 dollars. And youd still have alot of money left for like three or four more Super takumar lenses that will give you extremely great results. Personally I dont buy any new "auto-focus" lenses because once I put a Super Takumar on my camera ive never looked back. Other really great lenses are the 50mm 1:1.4 and the 55 1:1.8 super takumars. Good luck on your trip and I hope you find what your looking for.

SCN Settings

I dont really know if they work flawlessly but I do know that they kinda give the camera and idea of what to expect and what kind of pictures your taking so it sets itself up, but it does so as if you were taking the pictures in ideal conditions. I personally feel that practicing in manual mode is alot more worth than letting the camera do all the settings for you because only you know what kind of pictures you want and what the real conditions really are.

I say you go for a prime 200mm and the kit lens it works pretty well because even though the kit lens isnt the best, it takes care of close situations quite decently might I say so and the 200 prime can definitely get you better medium "tele-photo" photo's than a zoom lens can in the same range... if that makes any sense to you but thats just me and hope your purchase works out for ya.

Have to agree with them K100D (anything) is the way to go its just newer technology and the shake reduction is actually really good. Rarely will you get any blurry photos with the shake reduction on.
