Hi Henry, yes, I have received the refund in the form of an electronic gift card. The whole incident, however, left a rather bad after taste for me:
1) I never felt there was any form of urgency given by B&H to this case. I was told to wait even after almost one month of not receiving the package.
2) There was never any updates initiated by B&H. It's only myself continually probing about the status of the package were there rather delayed responses and replies.
3) After nearly two months only did B&H acknowledged that the package was lost. There was never any concern with regard's to the customer's urgency for the items. I mean, at the very least I would at the every least offer an overnight shipment to get the items delivered straight away to compensate for such an unreasonable long wait.
Perhaps I am expecting too much, but these are my thoughts and feelings as a customer.

Unfortunately, i will suffer currency conversion losses if I were given a refund as I my card is based on a different currency. Just hope that they ship it out immediately will do.

Thanks, Adam. I had contacted them a few times and feel that they are not quite treating my case with the due urgency it deserves. I hope to get an awareness from the B&H representative here so that it could possibly be resolved faster - seriously, I have gotten a bit sick of contacting them directly and personally given the "please wait while we try to resolve it" attitude. I believe I have given my utmost patience in this case.
I had been a long time B&H customer and past experiences had always been more or less positive. I am not sure what caused a change of service quality here but I hope it can be resolved soon. Thanks.

Hi,
I refer to order number #1053312637 placed on 7 Oct 18. The tracking number for this order had never worked. I had waited patiently for nearly a month before contacting B&H through live chat but was advised to wait till 7 Nov before getting back. I got back to B&H again a couple of days after 7 Nov and was advised that the package may indeed be missing and B&H would file a claim with the courier and get back to me.
Till today, I have not received any replies from B&H and I feel disappointed that my order was never treated with any urgency. I would like to seek help from the official B&H representative here. Thank you.

Glad to hear that! I was about to ask for the possibility of a repair or that the lens would have to be written off.

Goodness. Incidentally, I was referring to the fa31... i am more used to hearing about sdm failures. Anyone has a screwdrive failure to share? Seems like no af lens last forever...

I am presuming the in-body screw drive is a high torque motor. Sometimes when pointing at areas of low contrast which causes the AF to hunt, the focus ring will hit hard at the ends, i.e. either min focus distance or infinity. Overtime, I believe this metal on metal impact could cause some internal wear and tear on the lens focus mechanism?

Thanks so much to everyone all the very helpful and friendly advice! I have certainly learnt a lot. The SPT drivers seem promising. Any idea where to find the replacement screws? Else, I can probably order it through my local distributor.

Hi, I couldn't find any information on this anywhere - probably it was never discussed but I am trying to find out what kind of screw driver can I use to remove the tiny cross screws found on Pentax bodies and grips. I have a few of them rusting and hoping to clean or replace them. Incidentally, I tried removing one with a #0 micro screwdriver but it seems too big for the screw. And I also wonder if by any chance, the screws are actually lock-tited? Kind advise me. Thank you!

I see. One reason to go for the version II is that LED. I can imagine it's going to be useful in so many situations. Some day all flashes will have a secondary LED...

I see. Thanks! That's most helpful answer I could ask for. Yeah, I emailed Stofen to ask if they can make one for the version 2 flash but no reply was given.

Yes, I tried a few other copies and I think by design, DA70 tends to be most wobbly - I went through four copies before getting one with least wobble (serial suggests its from one of the earlier batches). DA40 is probably on par in terms of wobbliness though may appear less obvious due to it's diminutive size. DA21 is less wobbly though mine feels a little loose in terms of overall tolerance. DA35 may or may not be wobbly when fully extended. DA15 is absolutely solid.

Can anyone advise if the fit is the same, omnibounce for the old AF360 that is? I am inclined to presuming it would fit; Stofen haven't release a new omnibounce for the version ii...

I see. I got my mine like 4-5 years ago. Then Pentax could likely have improved their manufacturing and probably not due to the HD and SMC differences. Ok, apart from the subjectivity of "beautifully damped and smooth" though.

I see. I only had a brief touch on a relatively new demo copy of the HD40 and was immediately surprised by the apparent tight tolerances. Do keep us posted. Thanks!

Has anyone observed a difference in the built quality between the two series? I happened to fiddle a DA40 HD and was surprised how damped and smoothed the focus ring is. The whole lens seems to be built to tighter tolerances with little wobble if any. My good old DA40 SMC felt altogether looser (even when it was newly bought), similar to the rest of the SMC bunch. I am wondering if it is an issue with batch variation or that the HD's manufacturing process was indeed improved. I did recall going through three copies of the DA70 SMC to find a copy that has minimal wobble to the lens barrel though.

I got one from popflash just a month ago. Haven't really put it through its mill but I can tell its a damn fine lens. Very sweet in design and size too. Color rendition is as promised, same as the rest of the other zk's.
One thing that wows me is the number of elements it has got within that small compact body. You've got to see the lens diagram to appreciate that.

Unfortunately, I find the DA limiteds less than well-built when I moved on to better lenses.

Thanks. <: Actually, on the other hand, I have never had such an issue with any other lenses (including a couple of other zk's). Moreover, it arrived like this, straight from the brand new packaging.

Yap. my mind is made in trying a third copy now. <;
It's the last existing stock on shelves - yes, you probably can't find them new very soon I guess.

Thanks for you advice, interested_observer.
Yes, indeed it is a replacement copy. I had already contacted Zeiss with regard to the problem on the first copy and a very helpful and sincere Zeiss representative had advised me to send it in for cleaning or replacement by the dealer (B&H). I was having high hopes to acquire a good copy for this replacement but realised it's plagued with exactly the same problem! I had contacted both Zeiss and B&H and expecting a reply on the next couple of working days.
I was willing to just live with it but you are right too. For a lens that is hefty in price and expected to last a life-time, I shouldn't be making compromises here. Ha. For whatever the spots may be, there's two possibilities: 1) either this is a wide-spread issue (based on the serial numbers) or 2) something went wrong in B&H's warehouse. I was leaning towards 1) initially but I have a strong feeling with 2) now since I couldn't quite find similar problems for this lens elsewhere. I mean, there would have been some hoo-ha if it were indeed a wide spread problem and this lens isn't exactly new too.
I am pretty tired trying to be a investigator to be frank actually. My final option is to try buying from another dealer and see how it goes. It's rather unfortunate here for me as trying to rectify the issue always incur some extra shipping, taxation, frustrations and delays. >:

Fungus came to my mind too but I am wondering if there are such "spot fungus"? There are no web tracks or such. On the other hand, since I got both my copies from B&H, it may be possible that all copies are infected since they are probably stored in the same place! Yes, it may not be manufacturing! Ah...

Thanks for all inputs so far. It's not too clear from the first picture but the spots as I could tell are on the bottom surface of the first element and the top surface of the second element. While they are randomly positioned, they spread evenly across the entire surface of the elements. |
