It doesn't support Pentax AF because it's not an auto focus lens. It's manual focus.

DP Review puts K-1 Mark II as second worst camera of 2018

I don't mind being called loyal to my brand, I think that's a good thing. But if that conclusion comes with a narrative that it's blind loyalty, then that is where I would take exception. I'm loyal because I like Pentax design, I always have. When I worked in photo retail and I would sell Pentax, I would always say the reason I like it is because IMHO their ergonomics are the best and very user friendly. If the customer didn't default to Canikon and gave me a chance to explain, I would use the camera to validate my opinion.
When I see a review video, I expect to see at least some impartiality, but I am missing that somewhat with Chris and Jordan. They are sometimes almost smug about their reviews of Pentax, and they always warn the viewer about how their comments will rile Pentax users. I consider that patronizing, and unprofessional.
If you're going to do a review, we expect you have your own views on the product, just don't rub our nose in it. Respect the individual, don't rank on the maverick.

Say folks, if any of you Pentax shooters are pros or advanced amatuers and are on Facebook, I invite you to join the Pentax Photojournalists/Professional Pentaxians page.

Look at it this way; if camera sales fall to phones, and everyone like Canikon has to downsize to remain viable, Pentax is already there :)

It's almost as if many people are piling on with this theme of Pentax is dying because they all want to be the first ones who said "I told you so." Which is assinine. I long for the days of the rival US publications of Modern Photography and Popular Photography, where they concentrated on what cameras had to offer instead of making morbid predictions of the demise of camera systems. If it happened, it happened, the mags reported on it, and moved on. Where the resentment of Pentax comes from is a mystery, but as long as we keep getting new designs, I'm just gonna roll with it.

Sigma has directed their independent techs NOT to perform the fix? Why the hostility toward Pentax? I can understand if this was when Hoya had the name, but that was years ago. I have a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 which has been working great on my K-1. But I'll have to keep this in mind if I were to consider the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom. Right now I have the Tamron and that's been working out very well.

After reading about the end of Pentax now for some 10 years, and it hasn't happened yet, you gotta take this article with not just a grain of salt, but maybe the whole shaker. Does Pentax have issues, particulaly marketing? Yes. Does it have some issues with the array of new lenses that needs to be expanded, Yes. I can only hope those are being dealt with. But on the plus side, look at this: with the advent of phones, photography in general, when it concerns both SLR and DSLR use, may have peaked and might already be on the slide downwards. At some point, the convenience of phone photgraphy my continue to grow to a point that the general consumer leave DSLRs to the pros and hard core enthusiasts. If that happens, the Big Guys, Canon and Nikon might be in for some trouble concerning long term viability. It's always difficult for a big company to pair down. But a little company might weather a downturn much better. Leica is there already, playing on a much smaller scale, and so is Pentax, and perhaps even Olympus. So right now, being smaller might be a long term advantage. I don't think Pentax is going anywhere.

I'm prepared to gamble the KP is good for events, especially sports. I shoot mostly high school sports which means shooting in dimly lit gyms in godforsaken locations which is where I hope the KP pays off. And don't tell me Pentax can't shoot sports because I do it frequently and I'm getting sharp results. The KP was made, if memory serves, to compete with mirrorless cameras and was very much in keeping with the compact size Pentax has been known for since the ME, ME Super and MX cameras. I would give a long look at the KP or even K-70, which shares some KP features.

Best Pentax film SLRs?

Well, I guess this answer is fairly easy for me by virtue of the film cameras I kept after going digital. They are the LX, K2, and 6x7. And what I love about the 6x7 is that with a converter that I have, I can use my 6x7 lenses on any SLR I have film or digital, APS-C or full frame. No other camera company can say that from entirely within its own system.

Things continue to go well for me. I've gotten picked up by a daily recently, and I'm very happy about that. I continue to use the K-1 and K-3 as my primary units, and sometime soon I hope to trade in my K-5iis toward a KP with battery grip. Down the road a K-1 Mark II or maybe a K-3 III when that comes out. I'm having fun with my gear. And don't let anyone tell you the Pentax line has consumer construction grade; these cameras are tough, as most any Canon or Nikon, and unreal in the rain and snow. They are the real deal!

And don't let anyone tell you Pentax can't shoot sports, that's a myth, and a bad one. I have never shot rodeo ever in my life, but here you go:

We've all seen what you are referring to, Lesmore49. I've worked for newspapers since 1991. Yes, of course most use Canon and Nikon, but Canon has the lion's share of media pros. Canon has always been, since 1971, and continues to be very aggressive in pursuing the pro market. This has worked well for them; they realized if a lot of people saw pros using Canon, the amateurs would come into stores asking for them. They jump started this in the late 1970s when they introduced the Canon AE-1, and started and aggressive and persistent TV advertising run, which lasted for many years. That, coupled with more and more pros turning to Canon, especially when AF was introduced, put Canon over Nikon, who continued to make effective gear but wasn't nearly as aggressive in marketing as Canon. Minolta, Olympus, and Pentax occasionally dabbled in TV ads but Canon was relentless and stayed with it. That investment has paid off for them and they are top dog right now. Nikon remains in the game, but they really have to work harder at it.

So along comes someone like me, a born maverick, comes to a newspaper in metro Providence/southern Mass., I show my book and I get hired to freelance. I got razzed a lot showing up with Pentax in a Nikon house, but I made my bones shooting everything they threw at me. I had serious Pentax glass backing me up, including a 15mm f/3.5, and I got every job done. I eventually got all my own lenses, sometimes going with Tamron and/or Tokina to fill needs that were too expensive for me by Pentax, though I did score an excellent deal buying a Pentax 300mm f/2.8. If I ever got a FT gig, I'm well equipped but it might be a decent idea to buy a Canon or Nikon body to match what the house has for a system in case it became necessary to use a particular lenses I didn't have, such as a 600mm or some such. But I am very proud to shoot with what I have with results that can compete with the Canikon guys. I have no plans to change. Pentaxian for life!

Pentax K-1 "Thank you" Thread

I shot my first Pentax in 1975. Through the years with every new technology and innovation, which required some manufacturers to change their mounts and leave the past lenses behind like Canon and Minolta (Sony), Pentax has persisted and embraced the new, while maintaining a strong grip on their legacy. And now with the K-1, we have come full circle, by creating a camera that cherishes its past while welcoming in the new. I can now shoot with both my APS-C lenses and my FF lenses with equal ease, giving me the best of both worlds. Outstanding job, Ricoh/Pentax.

Already, this camera is provoking a lot of catty and patronizing remarks from the Canikon contingient, a group of people who can understand why Pentax remains and persists. they makes these remarks even though most haven't seen or touched the camera. What does that mean, really?

It means they know the K-1 is a real blockbuster, and they feel threatened. And it means Pentax did an amazing job in building the K-1. Great job, Pentax, great job. In my 41st year of using Pentax, we at last have our holy grail of DSLRs.

And thank you.

Has anyone seen this guy review a camera before? He gave the new K-1 a rather lukewarm review; then claimed -- adamantly -- that NO ONE using Canon or Nikon would ever switch to the K-1. I tried to tell him that nothing is that absolute, but he says no way anyone will switch. Yikes. Know it alls. This guy had an attitude about the K-1 even before he read about it, and of course, he hasn't seen one yet.
