Not my intention to slander the 50 in any way :) I moved the focal plane forward a little (manual) then also set a 2sec timer, still on tripod. Time of day has adjusted the lighting a little bit

Both shots taken within a few minutes of each other in an office with nice green light from above and good window light camera left. Both images manually focused – you can see the exact plane by examining the purple to green line transition on the left lower edge of the stone (often found with alabaster deposits, not sure what it is exactly) the 50mm is focused a little behind the 43mm image. Images taken on a tripod (no 2 second delay, sorry), and moved in to keep the subject similarly sized when switching lenses – unfortunately this also changes the perspective a little between the images.

I started with the 50 and then picked up the 43, expecting to replace it - but as has been mentioned a lot in this thread, they are different pieces of glass and perspective matters

Here are two shots I did for my own testing today, First the 43, then the 50, both at f2

and the 50

If only ONE portrait lens, which one?

Thanks for posting examples - I looked through a little of Jasmine Star's work and she appears to me to be all over the map in terms of focal length (lucky girl!) - some likely out in the 200 range - if you are looking for standout portfolio stuff, and can control your scene well (as mentioned earlier) then try for the 50-135 - f2.8 is plenty fast to mimick the work you like - most which appears to be shot between 2.8 and 4.5 anyway. Try manually focusing your fast 50 on your k-x before jumping into the manual lenses referenced - I have no reason to believe that they are not wonderful, but manual focus through the kx viewfinder would be hard for me to pull off. If the 50-135 is out of budget then I would go for a used copy of the 77mm -

Here's a shot from the 77 at f2, showing off some 'pop'

I recommend starting by compiling photo's that you like (regardless of what length or vendor) Then the experienced folks here could point out lens offerings that could help you get whatever look you are after.
For me if I could choose only one, for everything, then I'd take the FA43 for it's flexibility - with that said I shoot mostly with the FA77 becuase I like it and I only switch to shorter focal lengths when the situation warrants a different perspective.

Item for Sale
Sigma 24mm F1.8 EX DG ASPHERICAL MACRO (AF Lens) reduced price

Asking Price
440 410 380 USD shipped

Item Location
Colorado, USA

Item Description
Lens was purchased from another forum member a couple years ago. I purchased this as a travel/portrait/food lens and now I would like to exchange it with an 18-135 as a hiking and travel zoom. The lens comes with the caps and original box as well as the case and paperwork.

Willing to consider trade with $ for Pentax 18-135 WR

No scratches or marks on body or glass. When taking images for this post I noticed what looks like a small mark on one of the internal elements – I posted photos of this in the link below – see image of train engine left wheel – it is visible when plane of focus includes the inner elements, not visible to me in the image through the lens with focus on the subject (both images included).

See current photos of lens as well as images taken with it here

Better is a very relative thing - I shoot both and love them both. If you are after sharp wide open then maybe the 31 is a better bet in the FA lineup, or the 40mm - the DA limiteds are really sharp - sharper than I tend to like for portraits - I like shooting the 43 at f2 - it's still a little soft, and that's nice for what I do.

I love them both too, and the 31 has a nice all around range, but it's big! The 43 stays on the body more often and I swap out for the 31 when I need it - No expereince with the new 35, but the 43 is a joy to use.

I made a similar tradeoff - had saved up for the k-5, then bought a used k-7 and good glass (31mm is in the mail!) Body's come and go - good glass is (nearly) forever. Enjoy!

Help me choose between Pentax 50-135, Sigma/Tamron 70-200

I only have the tamron - both shots below taken with it

squirrel | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Miki 39 weeks | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I had the aperture issue within a week of purchasing the lense - got it fixed under warrantly
It is now in for focus issues - which should also be under warranty too - from other users it sounds like once you get the kinks out it's a great lense. But I keep wundering if I should have saved my pennies for the pentax 60-250 -

I love the lense when it's working, but I usually end up using medium telephoto primes for portraits, unless I want the field of view at 200mm then I switch over.

I picked up the sigma 24mm 1.8 macro (it's not 1 to 1 though). The lens itself is heavy, but a nice range for walking around and then I can use it with a reversing ring to get shots like this one - as mentioned in other posts, the working distance is really short - .5 to 1.5 inches

I was recently making a similar call, upgrading the k200, skipped the k-5 and picked up the k-7 and now have money for glass (43mm) prices on bodies drop fast, if you don't need what the k5 has to offer right now then skip it - body prices drop. Lenses on the other hand are a joy.

By default the k200 and k7 use the popup flash along with whatever slave you are using - so a diffuser would help with the light, but cut down on the likelyhood of it triggering your slave. In the settings you can disable the flash in wireless mode (it still flashes but only prior to the shutter, to trigger you slave) so that it does not contribute to the overall exposure. Let me know if you would like help finding the setting on either body

Cheers,
Len

I love the atmosphere and complexity of the second image - it is very inviting and your eyes can wander through the whole frame and find interesting content - really nice work.

Nice - I like to cable the flash to allow HSS and off camera - I have not had good luck using the wireless function during the daytime. When out and about I take a 43inch umbrella which is small and light and you can handhold the cabled flash and the umbrella shaft together - it's awkward, but allows you to get get big soft outdoor light.

Link to an example, this time with the umbrella and flashed held by by my helper
