Tips for shooting 1 year old's birthday party

I seem to remember a 50 MM lens being the perfect length for kids that size. The 40 was wide enough to get the background, and the 28 will make the kids too small.

I enjoy shooting Pentax because of how nicely the modern camera bodies interact with thousands of K-Mount lenses from so many different era. Older lenses were made with materials not used today, and create a mood that cannot be replicated with a Photoshop plug-in. One of my favorite older lenses is my SMC Pentax-FA 85 Soft, because of the magical effects it created in high-contrast situations, and the eerily realistic way it reproduces wet surfaces. So, my advice is to get one of these Pentax soft focus lenses, and shoot fish in a koi pond, like the one below.

I haven't posted at Pentax Forums in a while, and the links to my old soft-focus lens shots have stopped working (my fault, changed hosting services).
So, here are some pictures I took in Maui with my FA Soft 85mm f2.8:

Here's a link to the rest if you find these interesting:

Also, I wrote a blog about how I took these pictures:

It's nice to see these threads filled with so much fantastic new work!
Thanks to everyone in the Pentax community for keeping this wonderful site going.

Here's a spider that was crawling around my patio yesterday morning. I used a Tammy 90 Macro on a k5iis, on body flash.

Here's my first Macro shot that I've posted - a grasshopper that was climbing on my basil plant this morning. I used a Tamron 90 and the onboard flash of my K5iis. I'd love to have a ring flash for more even lighting.
I did post production on (sigh) Aperture. Mainly contrast, definition, blackpoint, and exposure correction. Maybe some vignette.

Please let me know what you guys think, and how I might improve my Macro shots!

15 or 21 Ltd for 'people in their surroundings' photos?

Between the 15 and 21, yes, the 21 is better for street photography.
However, I owned the 21 for a time, and actually found it a little too wide. The focal length was always unflattering to the people I wanted to capture in their surroundings. Correcting for the barrel distortion helped, but not enough for my taste.
In the end, I sold the 21 and now use an old K28 3.5 for these kind of shots. Just the right tool for the job, in my opinion.

What lenses should i get for political campaign

Were some of the shots that impressed them taken with manual lenses? You may want to consider that the older lenses expressed the mood that they were going for.
Lenses from different eras express portraits differently, and a political campaign is sensitive to subtle messages images of their candidate deliver.
I would suggest having a talk with your client about the image they are trying to express. Modern high-contract lenses may be perfect - or a complete disaster.

I still haven't picked up a lens hood, but I took my K55 to the beach this week on vacation. Here is a landscape, medium, and closeup shot with it.
In my opinion, some of my more modern glass would have done a better job with the highlights in the landscape, but I prefer the realistic skin tones in the portraits to DA glass.
Plus, I like taking less expensive gear to the beach...

I'm good, thanks! Looking forward to the next SoCal photo adventure.
I appreciate the lens hood links. The hoods look nice, and you sure can't beat the price.
If you confirm no vignetting wide open, I will buy the exact same hoods.

Thank you!
Has anyone found a nice 52mm hood for this lens that takes advantage of the 1.5 crop factor (so I would imagine a bit longer than the original)?
I also would like a hood for my K 28 3.5...

I picked up a K55 1.8 to see if I would like the focal length because I am considering the purchase of a DA* 55.
After 40 years of dust have been professionally removed, this lens has magical qualities unique to all other Pentax glass. I won't be parting with it.

Have you considered setting up your own web site? It's not as difficult as it seems. I have found A Small Orange to be an excellent and affordable hosting service. Aperture exports my photos as nice web pages.

Used pricing for a K-Mount VL 58 is ridiculously expensive right now, especially when compared to a Pentax DA* 55 that has auto-focus and weather sealing.
