Pentax 645Z vs Fujifilm GFX 50R

Haha yes it did, sadly I had to sell the 645Z to fund the X1D system. So at the time the only youtube reviews I did was the 645Z vs the 50R and 645Z vs the X1D, I didn't have time to do all 3 together.

I can comment though, and say if you don't care about the weight or the size of the 645Z, hands down the 645Z has the better raw files, faster and more accurate focusing, as well as the feeling like you can drop it and itll still work, plus the lenses are affordable as well.

The Fujifilm GFX 50R, at around ISO 3200 and above you can see this noise pattern I did not like, lenses for it are so sharp, I feel that sharpening is happening to the raw files in the camera, like its being baked in, colors are more towards the magenta side of things.

The X1D raw files are between the GFX and 645Z files, noise is not bad but not as good as the 645Z noise control, lenses are really excellent with the X1D, shutter is in the lens itself (left shutter system) so its rated for 1,000,000 exposures, whats funny is the shutter will sound different depending on what lens you put on the X1D, but the 45mm I have now, it sounds as loud as the 645Z shutter, weird right.

What attracted me to the X1D system, is the touch screen, easy to use menus, the colors straight out of camera (Hasselblad is more towards a green tint I been noticing), size is so small, will be happy to take it with me on my next vacation, also loving the touch screen interface on changing settings / menus, I just feel more of a connection with the X1D, GFX 50R, feels larger and more hallow when you pick it up, buttons are kinda small. If anyone has any questions they can PM me or ask here :)

Pentax 645Z vs Fujifilm GFX 50R

Hey Bob, in the 645Z vs 50R video, I did do a comparison, as well has the 645Z vs Hasselblad X1D, you will notice the 645Z has electronic stabilization in video, so its much smoother, but video does seem sharper on the gfx and x1d, I think its just because they are newer cameras, but 1080p is great on all cameras :)

I don't think Guam would be a problem, I have over 555 positive feedback on eBay since 1998 all shipping from Guam, and 90 positive feedback at Fred Miranda Forums, all shipping from Guam. USPS Priority Mail would take 4-6 days from here to the US mainland. I think its just a high amount for the kit, I really dont want to separate that just means I need to take more trips to the Post Office.

I know thats the thing about buying gear and selling we always lose out :( I'm losing out alot of $ on this sale.

hahha Hafa Adai!! :)

645Z is still plenty sharp when using certain lenses, like the 55mm 2.8 or the 75mm 2.8, yes the GFX is much sharper, but ISOs above 6400 the 645Z wins, Fujifilm bakes in too much sharpness to their raw files. So if a demo unit 645Z+lens is $3500 that is okay, because you're getting 4 lenses in this deal. Add the extra 3 lenses they are worth around $1500, and do the math $3500 + $1500 is $5,000, which this for sale thread price is much lower than :)

Yes I think you're right Lisa :) but its okay I just answered Publicly just encase others are wondering the same thing too.

Thank you! and Thank you for watching the youtube channel :) Still thinking if I should take down this 645Z kit and just keep it, its just not worth losing so much $$$ over it right now, prices are falling everywhere, even the X1D that I do want to try after this is really low, since the announcement of the X1D Mark II. I do know the X1D is slower than this, also more expensive, but the size and touch screen I do like, we will see, may just end up keeping this a bit longer :)

Been thinking about this for months, not sure if I should try to sell this 645 system. Such a great system with amazing raw files, in my opinion theses file are much more cleaner than the Fujifilm GFX raw files at higher ISOs.

Would like to trade for a Hasselblad X1D with lens, I can cover the difference in the trade. I do want to try something new for the summer, and something to review on my youtube channel.

For sale would be the Pentax 645Z (10,530 shutter count) RRS plates, extra battery, box / paper work, 645Z membership card etc., with lenses.

New 645z not turning off

Hello Lauren,

I recently visited Ricoh Imaging Square in mid April in Shinjuku, and did maintenance on my 645Z. I hope they can fix your issue on site, it took about 3 hours for them to do maintenance on my 645Z and 2 lenses. I did make a youtube video about this, I too had a photoshoot the same day! Haha. I also say you should try a different SD card. It has happen to different camera brands were the SD card will actually drain the camera battery over night, or even cause the camera not to shut off. Also make sure to always format your SD cards in the camera, and dont just pull it out of the computer, for example if you do, the 645Z will say corrupted SD card, you gotta formally "eject" it from the menu system on the computer, Good Luck!

Thank you! you'll see more in the video! :)

Thank you! Oh interesting, well I was with my friend Tomo who lives in Yokohama so he was doing the talking for me, even took the queue number for the repair counter. I was told if I wanted to calibrate the 55mm 2.8 to the body (645Z) to be perfect, I would have to send it off to the Philippines, and it would take a month, but repair cost would be around $75. I just didnt want to be without the 645Z for a month, plus on the other lenses it was perfect.

Nice!! :)

Thank you!! :)

Oh wow cool! yeah K1 autofocus is probably as fast as the 645Z. Actually, the K-1 was never mine, it's my friends, he let me borrow it for a review. I only make a video letting people know when I switch brands, so right now the camera I use the most is the Lumix g9, and for my personal portrait shoots is the 645Z. All the other cameras you see such as the GFX 50R, or the Olympus E-M1 Mark II, or X-T3, etc.. are all my friends here on Guam, they let me borrow their gear to do youtube reviews, but my channel mainly focuses on portraits with the cameras. Thanks for being a long time subscriber :)

Uploaded on my youtube channel - I take the Pentax 645Z to my recent trip to Japan, I visited Ricoh Imaging Square in Shinjuku to have it serviced. I was very impressed by their service and price, they were able to clean the 645Z, Pentax 55mm 2.8, and 150mm 2.8 lens. They only charged me to clean the lenses and cleaning and servicing of the 645Z was free! They did tell me that the 645Z has some front focusing, so I need to dial it in to -5 for the AF fine tune adjust, I had my friend who was translating for me, but for some reason the screw driven lenses 75mm and 150mm, is tack sharp wide open, only the new 55mm f/2.8 needs to be AF fine tuned. So total price was around $20 of service, then the next day had a photoshoot with a Japanese / Brazilian model, here is the link to the video, and some pics are attached here.

Pentax 645Z vs Fujifilm GFX 50R

Been reading all the comments here :) Truth be told, I am tempted by Fujifilm, as they have the 110mm f/2 lens, since I am a portrait guy this will be perfect for my background to subject (model) separation, but you can't beat the value the 645Z is giving with its affordable second-hand lenses ( Got the 150mm 2.8 for such a good deal). I still do prefer an optical viewfinder though for my portraits :)

I will be traveling to Japan next month, I'm gonna visit Ricoh Pentax Imaging Square at Shinjuku and have them service the 645Z, they told my friend who lives in Yokohama (who will be accompanying me) that it'll take 3 hours to clean and adjust. I'm gonna ask if they can calibrate the FA 55mm 2.8 to the body. I never had Pentax service before, I'll be vlogging my trip and share with everybody here :)

Thank you!! :)

I hope they still are :/

Maybe youtube compression doesnt show it, but its the sharpest images I have ever seen, and I've used some sharp lesnes, what comes close is the Leica Summicron APO that I used for a video review, but this GFX lens is on another level, plus Fujifilm is gonna use the GFX lenses on their new 100MP body, im sure they knew while creating the GFX50s that they gonna go higher on the MP in the future :)

yeah there could be some in camera sharpening, its just crazy sharp.

Yes I love how the 645Z feels in the hands :) . I am assuming the 645Z has more seals since it is a larger body with 76 seals, and 50R is a smaller body at 64 seals, just makes sense to me. 645Z more durable based on those that owend it that I talked to, B&H marketing reps came to Guam and we all met at the beach, and I brought the 645Z, one guy said he had the camera for over a year, and took it with him to I believe Bali or Thailand? not sure, but he took it through the rain and mud and still worked.

True, both can be big and bulky :)

Thats why I like the 645Z system most lenses are within my reach ($$).

I do want to try out the 80-160 :) Maybe ill get it when im in Japan next month.

Yes this is true, from what I noticed.

Pentax 645Z vs Fujifilm GFX 50R

Hello All,

I did a youtube video review featuring both cameras, each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Just a short summary for those that don't want to view the youtube video :)

Pentax 645Z is much cleaner when recovering shadows compared to the 50R, also is less noisy at ISO 6400 in LightRoom. Last night which is not shown in the video, I loaded up the raw files into Capture One, I had to change the EXIF of the 645Z DNG files to read PhaseOne IQ250, and it seems that there is a lot of noise reduction going on with the 50R files, smoothing out the ISO 6400, but to my eyes the 645Z is still cleaner. The GFX 50R though can recover highlights better than I noticed. Also, the new GFX lenses are super sharp!! Wow!! They can clearly resolve 100MP for the new GFX 100 camera. The 645Z has more affordable lenses, and if you have a Pentax 645 film camera, you can easily use it on the digital 645D and Z, the Fujifilm you can't since its a new mount. One more thing, the raw files from the 50R seem more magenta looking, where the 645Z files are much warmer and pleasing to my eyes.

let me know if you guys have any questions :)

When I first used the 645Z to do a youtube review from my friend in the summer of 2017, I was blown away, I didn't care about the the size of the camera anymore, mirrorless? what is that?! lol , I was so blown away by the raw files, and the image quality, been thinking about it ever since. So... I finally jumped and purchased the 645Z from my close friend who was selling it last month Feb 2019. He sold his 645Z and M-P 240 to get a Fujifilm GFX 50r, I'm gonna do some comparisons soon in a couple of weeks, but I actually prefer the colors from the 645Z and grain better than the GFX, though the same sensor, I think the 645Z has more DR :)

Hello Everyone,

Been lurking every now and then, I remember reading an old thread many years ago on how everyone was voting or petitioning for Pentax to make a full frame camera, and years later the K-1 was introduced :) I am from the small U.S. territory island of Guam. I do youtube videos, camera and lens reviews of various brands. I have done a K-1 and 645Z review for portraits, this youtube channel is different, we use Guam's beautiful scenery and Guam's beautiful models, links are below. I plan to purchase a 645Z soon, thats how excellent that camera is when I reviewed it, it made me want one!!

-James
