Travel friendly tripod recommendation

Even the Peak Design fanboys are admitting that the Ulanzi tripod (which to be fair is "heavily inspired" by the Peak Design) is better in nearly every way. And much cheaper.

What is the best choice between the D-FA21mm vs D-FA15-30mm shooting @21mm only?

I love both, but the DFA 21 Ltd is more likely to make it into my bag due to size and weight. If you only want to shoot 21 mm (which is a very nice FL on FF), it is the obvious choice. I would take the 15-30 for monumental architecture because of the zoom, but the 21 for most other sessions.

It's irrelevant if you're shooting at 1/1250. But no, I keep it on.

I see them often, and find them easy to photograph as they do not seem to mind the attention, unless you get very close.

How well is the K-3 iii selling?

Sounds plausible, unless a large slab of the serial number sequence is reserved for certain markets not well represented on PF (e.g., Japan), and also assuming that most manufactured cameras have been sold and are not sitting as stock at Ricoh.

A 25:1 black:silver ratio wouldn't surprise me.

Not likely! I can't see the 15 Limited disappearing for a long time, in part because I can't see them replacing it with anything.

True. But a 50/1.7 was the kit lens in film days, and that has been supplanted by a wide-medium zoom. It probably doesn't have the universal appeal it used to.

But that would step on the toes of the DFA* 50 f/1.4, so is unlikely.

The DFA 21 Limited hits the sweet spot for me. Or the DFA 15-30 for architecture.

It's when the former is less than the latter that you have a design flaw.

K-70 and 18-135mm street photography

I like the K-1 for street photography, especially with the moon-lander screen and waist-level shooting. Good lenses to go with it are the DFA 28-105, DFA* 50, the DA 40 Limited, and even the DFA* 70-200 (don't laugh). I find the 70-200 particularly good while seated, holding camera and lens on my lap and watching the world go by.

DigiDirect dumps Pentax?
Posted By Paul the Sunman

A major Australian camera store chain, DigiDirect, seems to have dumped Pentax. No cameras remain in their on-line catalogue, and only four cheap lenses which are probably just run-outs.

I have bought a lot of cameras and lenses from them over the years, and they had some good prices at times. It is a pity to see them go. I suspect they couldn't really compete with the official on-line Pentax store or their eBay offshoot dcxpert, so they've stopped trying. There are now not many options to see Pentax gear in the flesh before buying.

Pentax KF

I was told this directly by the Australian distributer, CRK.

Hi Paul,

It caught us by surprise as well. We would have rather seen the K-70 go, but Ricoh Japan thought that having the KP & K-3 Mk III competing would confuse the market, while the K-70 has a bigger feature gap that makes the upgrade more relevant.
They are very wary of not falling into the Canon trap, where cameras are so closely positioned to each other that it confuses the market.

The KP was discontinued because it was too close to the K3iii and would have cannibalised sales. It will be interesting to see how much separation there is between the KF and the K3iii. At this price point, I would guess quite a lot.
