why I won't buy a k3 (Warning: Satire Thread)

Yes, it is.

I posted a picture recently of the last one, which I had opportunity to participate in the manufacture of, as it sat in the last position before going out the door. In fact, tonight, that airplane is rolling out the door, to be towed across State Route 526 to the paint hangar and flight line.

End of an era.

And as I return to work tomorrow, I have 13 more working days left, 3 paychecks, 4 weeks, 1 day, 17 hours and change.

That’s nearly six pounds.

Man, you must really like the stuff.

Went to Treyvon’s memorial yesterday, and the funeral today. As he was active duty in the Army, he was given a full military ceremony, a group of soldiers from his unit, the 82nd Airborne from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and the Chaplin from there.

Also one of the guys he went through jump school with came up for 5he funeral. They became friends when they met on their first jump. As they were in the C17 riding to the jump zone, the guy told Trey that not only was this his first jump, it was the first time he had ever been in an airplane.

Funny story.

Trey touched many lives, and everyone he met remembers him for his smile, his positive nature, his generous heart. So many of his fellow soldiers asked for leave to attend his funeral, that the senior leadership had difficulty allowing leave. They did schedule a memorial for Trey at Fort Bragg this coming Thursday for the entire group.

I may have mentioned that Trey wasn’t a blood relative, that his biological father contributed nothing more to the boy’s life than the seed that fertilized the egg, when he was hopping from one clandestine liaison to another, and impregnating Trey’s mother when she was stepping out on Mrs. Racer’s son. This loser has countless offspring, some he has never known, none that he has ever contributed more than the genesis of their lives. He has dodged the welfare agencies from a dozen jurisdictions, and somehow has managed to get by, never holding a job.

He never sent Trey a birthday card, or a Christmas gift.

He never saw him but once, when Trey was in his early teens, and Trey traveled to visit him, Trey paying for the plane ticket.

He wasn’t there when the boy was born.

My stepson raised Trey, as his own son, without Trey’s mother, whom he divorced. He was there, giving Trey a chance to have a good life, teaching him to be a good person.

So it was exceptionally difficult today, to see the soldier present the folded flag to Trey’s biological father, while the man who was the only real father Trey knew sat on the side.

We took solace knowing that we had 21 years with Trey in our lives, something that guy will never have.

Our frost free freezer consumes the ice from the ice maker. We keep plastic drink bottles with water in the freezer, frozen for the times when the power goes out, to help keep the food longer. The frost free feature consumes the ice, at some point completely emptying them. Anything frozen that has moisture ultimately becomes freeze dried.

This trough sealed plastic containers.

I think the occasional defrost of a regular freezer is a small price to pay for frozen food that doesn’t get dried to nothing.

At the Big Shed they have commercial freezers to keep the sealant used for all faying surface sealing. The temperature is a tightly controlled -70 F. The seal begins curing after it is thawed, so keeping it frozen until used is important.

Yes.

A local service is over 100 years old.

The Finest Farm-Fresh Milk and More - Pete's Milk Delivery

Started as Smith Brothers Dairy, it is still a family run business today, delivering farm fresh dairy and other items to Pacific Northwest customers daily.

There are other similar businesses all over the US.

I see there are also similar services in England.

I started the task of replacing the ball joints two weeks ago, expecting it to take a few days. I knew I would need to replace the wheel bearings, as I could hear them howling a bit. I waited until I had the hubs off so I could be sure of getting the correct races and cages, and correct seals. I didn’t expect to need to replace the auto locking hubs, but when I took this side apart I found the auto locking hub assembly in more pieces than were originally assembled. No worries, the local 4x4 shop got a set of Warn manual locking devices, as well as the required bearing locking nuts and keepers from their warehouse straight away.

I didn’t notice the damage until I was cleaning the hub for assembly last night. The deformed barrel explains why the auto locker was broken

This pickup was the other grandpas truck, then the stepson’s, then the oldest grandson’s, before I got it when I had my last foot surgery (I needed an automatic transmission so I could drive with a cast on my right foot, using my left foot to drive, so I bought it from the grandson). The stepson told me today that he had replaced the auto locker when he had it, as it was broken then. I asked why he didn’t replace the hub, and he said he didn’t notice the damage.

Maybe he was working in the dark.

Found a guy on Craigslist selling doors, fenders and hoods for this vintage F series pickups and Broncos. Messaged and asked if he has one, he says come look this afternoon.

I’m growing impatient waiting for his message that he is home.

Meanwhile, some more poor quality iPhone pictures of the hub.

I’ve seen lens barrels this bad, but they are aluminum. This isn’t even close to round anymore.

Continuing work on Eddie, wrapping up the ball joint replacement, which also includes replacement of the front wheel bearings and brake rotors.

Oh, and I wound up needing to replace the 4 wheel drive auto locking hubs as the right side came out in more pieces than when in. Last evening as I was cleaning up the right hub carrier in preparation for reassembly, I discovered why the auto locking hub mechanism came out broken.

Someone has attempted to straighten the outboard end of the bore after it was damaged. The new manual locking hub assembly won’t go in.

A new hub carrier is no longer available.

Finding one for a 27 year old truck is not going to be easy.

Fruit.

Specifically a berry.

Delicious, raw, cooked, stewed, alone or alongside many other foods.

Some people even put ketchup on their tomatoes.

Blech!

Remember when Nancy Regan started the school lunch program, that was supposed to put healthy food on the plates of our children? The list excluded anything that wasn’t animal or vegetable.

So they rewrote the definition of ketchup so it could be allowed on the lunchroom menus.

Ketchup is a condiment, made from sugar (or worse, high fructose corn syrup) and vinegar, with salt and other seasonings, onions, and yes, tomato purée.

Chili only has one L in it, when referring to peppers or the stew.

Chilly has two Ls in it when referring to cold weather.

We need to be conservative with our Ls, as excessive usage will leave us with a shortage of them.

The rail cars that carry shipping containers are built to handle the containers stacked two high. So the car is built with a drop to get the bottom container as low as possible so the second container doesn’t make the car over height.

The “curtain” you see is the structure of the rail car. Since the bottom of the car is so close to the roadbed, the sides are built to carry the load, much like a floor truss in a house or commercial building.

The rail cars share trucks at each end, the trucks supporting the trailing end of one car, the leading end of the next.
