Ricoh Imaging having filed four patent applications between November 2018 and February 2021 plus a divisional in September 2022, which include 20 examples of 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lenses, I wouldn't hope too much if I were you. ;)

Based on past events, the rule, if there is one, is as follows:
  • lenses with improvements in coatings or mechanics only, appear 'out of the blue': 100mm Macro WR, HD DA Limiteds, 55-300mm WR, HD FA 645 35mm f/3.5, HD 35mm f/2, HD fisheye, HD FA Limiteds

  • lenses with improved optics are first introduced on the roadmap, albeit with a generic name: 'DA Standard Zoom Lens' (--> HD DA 16-50mm f/2.8 ED PLM AW), 'Macro Lens' (--> HD D FA Macro 100mm f/2.8 ED AW)

Concerning the latter, the time span between roadmap introduction and lens announcement varies greatly from one example to another:
  • the DA Standard Zoom Lens was introduced on 28 February 2019 and the HD DA 16-50mm f/2.8 ED PLM AW was announced on 15 July 2021 (almost two and a half years)

  • the Macro Lens was introduced on 1 August 2022 and the HD D FA Macro 100mm f/2.8 ED AW was announced on 20 October (less than three months)

Ricoh Imaging has quietly released a new version of the roadmap, dated November 2022:

http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/japan/products/lens/images/K_Mount_Lens.pdf

- The 'Macro Lens' of the '2022 or Later' segment has been embodied in the HD Pentax-D FA Macro 100mm f/2.8 ED AW in the 'Current Line Up', where it replaces the smc Pentax-D FA Macro 100 mm f/2.8 WR

- Three other lenses have disappeared from the 'Current Line Up':
  • smc Pentax-DA 14mm f/2.8 ED [IF]

  • smc Pentax-DA 200mm f/2.8 ED [IF] SDM

  • smc Pentax-DA 60-250mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM

On the Japanese Ricoh Imaging website, they had been listed as 'Discontinued Lenses' by mid-October.

Ricoh Imaging has quietly released a new version of the roadmap, dated November 2022:

http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/japan/products/lens/images/K_Mount_Lens.pdf

The differences from the August 1 version are as follows:

Curiously, the upcoming lenses segment is still titled '2022 or Later' and not '2023 or Later'. Oversight or hint of an upcoming announcement?

Ricoh CFO: "The time has come for us to choose which businesses to choose,"

To get back on topic: there is an official document from Ricoh, published on 30 September 2022, named 'Ricoh Group Integrated Report 2022', which might answer some questions raised in this topic.

https://www.ricoh.com/-/media/Ricoh/Sites/com/about/integrated-report/pdf202...a8390e871511b9

I'm referring to the section named 'Medium- to Long-Term Outlook and the 20th Mid-Term Management Plan - Ricoh Lift Off' (pages 19 to 33), more specifically to pages 21 and 22 which cover the same topics as the interview given by Takashi Kawaguchi, Ricoh CFO, to the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun.

In particular there is a reference to the three criteria (profitability, market position and fit with digital services) according to which businesses are objectively assessed and allocated to four categories:
  • growth acceleration

  • profit maximization

  • strategic transformation

  • business revitalization

The camera business is assessed as (i) low-profitability, (ii) unlikely to success in reaching a leading market position and (iii) having a low compatibility with and/or bringing low contributions to digital services.

Accordingly, it has been allocated to the 'business revitalisation' category. It will "explore ways to contribute to value", a non-committal statement.

Page 22/102 is the only one mentioning the camera business. By comparison, there are several references to the Theta business in the report, including a 'case study' (Leveraging 360° camera and images - RICOH360 Service).

Er... no, they don't. Last figures available date back to FY2018. Ricoh Imaging, the whole Ricoh Imaging including Ricoh GR, Theta and WG in addition to the Pentax business, had an annual revenue of ¥18.3bn. That's around €130m.

The page from Digital Camera World (I can't call it a report) is complete clickbait.

Dated 27 October 2022, the original article from the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun ("The Daily Industrial News"), one of the leading daily newspapers in Japan, specialising in business and industrial affairs, is much broader and more balanced. Nowhere are Pentax or Ricoh Imaging mentioned.

I quote:

[It's] time to select businesses'; financial indicators Ricoh focusses on.

Response to the in-house company system

Ricoh, which is shifting from a multifunction printer company to a digital services company against the backdrop of the rapid progress towards a paperless society, introduced an in-house company system in April 2021, with an emphasis on return on invested capital (ROIC). In addition to profitability and investment efficiency based on ROIC, the business portfolio is assessed from two other perspectives: market position and fit with digital services. Shun Kawaguchi, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Corporate Executive Officer, says: "We have come to a point in time where we have to make a selection of businesses."

Ricoh has set a target of achieving a ROIC of over 8% in FY25. It has about 30 businesses, several of which it will move towards selling or withdrawing from. About a year and a half after the introduction of the company system, the head of each entity has been given authority, which has "speeded up the decision-making process" (Kawaguchi). ROIC is only an indicator of efficiency, with return on equity (ROE) being the most important factor. The aim is to achieve [an ROE of] more than 10% in FY25.

In order to achieve ROE, ROIC is managed in a two-tier structure in which it is linked to key measures for each business unit and to key performance indicators (KPIs). This management approach was fully implemented in FY22. Rather than simply chasing numbers, "we identify what is not being done, then pursue efficiency and implement measures to improve results" (Kawaguchi).

Share buy-backs are not intended to improve ROE, but rather to realise an optimum capital structure with a targeted net asset value of approximately 1 trillion yen in FY25 and a shareholder return policy of a total return ratio of 50%. However, the most recent 30 billion yen buyback of shares in May 2022 was made in consideration of exchange rate adjustments due to the ongoing depreciation of the yen.

The group also uses sustainability-oriented methods for financing. The use of Sustainability Linked Loans (SLL), which offer preferential interest rates and other benefits according to the achievement of targets, and loans in which environmental initiatives are assessed and implemented, "puts good pressure" (Kawaguchi).

Pentaxrumors: no more silver 15mm Limited?

The DA 60-250mm f/4, together with the DA 200mm f/2.8, DA 14mm f/2.8 and D FA 100mm f/2.8 Macro WR, was moved to the discontinued list on the Japanese version of Ricoh Imaging website around mid-October. The English version hasn't been updated yet.

販売終了:デジタル一眼レフカメラ用レンズ一覧 / レンズラインナップ / レンズ / 製品 | RICOH IMAGING

(title: 販売終了:デジタル一眼レフカメラ用レンズ一覧, which means List of Discontinued Lenses for Digital SLR Cameras)

The HD DA 15mm f/4 Limited is not on this list but, even if the rumour this thread is about were true and the silver version were to be discontinued soon, this is normal since Ricoh Imaging don't make a distinction between silver and black versions: as long as one of them is not discontinued (and the black one is not supposed to be), the lens is not considered as discontinued.

The rumour of the four lenses quoted above being about to be discontinued surfaced on the Web on the 6th of October, nine days before this discontinuation became official.

However, there is a sensible difference between the 'rumour of four' and the silver 15mm rumour: the former came from a well-known and respected retailer, whose Tweet began with 'From Ricoh Imaging - We have received notice of the discontinuation of the following lenses' whereas the latter comes from a guy, asobinet, who is known for indifferently relaying rumours he finds here and there on the net and who, in this specific case, is merely reporting that some retailers list the silver DA 15mm f/4 Limited as discontinued, which could as well correspond to the lens being temporarily out of stock.

Because Leica Camera AG, owned by the Kaufmann family (56%) and a private equity fund (Blackstone, 44%), don't view their Monochrom cameras as opportunities to make money?

Yet their Monochrom cameras are only €50 (Q2) to €200 (M10) more expensive than their standard counterparts.

Leica monochrome cameras aren't that more expensive than their standard counterpart. For instance:
  • Leica M10-R: €8,150. Leica M10 Monochrom: €8,350.

  • Leica Q2: €5,650. Leica Q2 Monochrom: €5,700.

(don't compare prices between the Leica M10 -24 Mpix sensor- and M10 Monochrom -40 Mpix sensor-)

Why should a Pentax K-3 Mark III Monochrome be much more expensive than a standard Pentax K-3 Mark III?

To be perfectly clear: had the KF been named K-70 Super instead (I'm resurrecting an old Pentax naming scheme there), everything else, launch price included, being as it is, I wouldn't have had any reservation whatsoever concerning this camera.

And so people had more expectations concerning the KF as a successor to the 6½-year old K-70 than they had concerning the K-50 as a successor to the one-year old K-30.

I have no horse in this race, being no more interested in the KF than in the K-70 (both being fine cameras though) but the problem, as I see it, is the KF naming suggesting more improvements than a new LCD screen, a USB-C charger (not a USB-C camera connector, mind you), three additional custom image modes and two special edition custom image modes.

Panasonic and Sony were more 'low profile', the former in renaming their Lumix DC-G99, DC-TX2 and DC-TC95 as Lumix DC-G99D, DC-TX2D and DC-TZ95D respectively and the latter in keeping the same commercial name and just adding an A at the end of the model name:
  • Alpha 7R III (ILCE-7RM3) --> Alpha 7R III (ILCE-7RM3A)

  • Alpha 7R IV (ILCE-7RM4) --> Alpha 7R IV (ILCE-7RM4A)

when they did just that: change the rear LCD.
