is it worth it to try and sell an older Tamron 70-200mm lens

I recently sold mine. The key with selling older gear like this is to remove yourself emotionally from the transaction and tell yourself, hey I got my original investment out of this gear so it doesn't matter if it sells low. It's still a great lens and is useful on both digital and film slrs so someone will buy it. When I listed mine I looked up what I thought was a reasonable price and then lowered the price $25 every couple days until it sold. In the end it went for $400CAD (about $300USD). Yeah I bought it new for around $1k but that was many years ago, and like I said I got my original investment out of it in the form of great pictures and fun. Now someone else got a bargain and a chance to keep making great images with it.

Focus Issues :( Particularly with screwdrive lenses.

For what it’s worth my own experience with focus fine tuning on 6 different Pentax bodies and 25+ lenses is that focus adjustments of up to +-10 are not uncommon. What is unlikely is for all your lenses to need the same adjustment or no adjustment at all on your K5. That is very suspect to me and while there may very well be something wrong with your K3iii there is almost certainly something wrong in your focus adjustments. Every lens to body pairing has 2 completely unique metal surfaces pressed together not to mention that the position of the elements is never perfectly precise inside each lens. That combination means that yes it is entirely possible, in fact likely, for lenses on a new camera body to need -7 adjustment. I found that with careful tuning I can get consistent results even at F1.4 though all my screw drive lenses are less consistent than all my dc/sdm lenses.

Pentax K1 II vs Nikon D850

This is a handy feature for sure, but no longer unique to Pentax as it has appeared in a lot of the newer MILC cameras. I don't think it is available in a D850 though.

Pentax K1 II vs Nikon D850

Honestly if you are looking at Nikon I wouldn't be buying a new D850. As has been mentioned there isn't a future in Nikon DSLRs. Nikon Z would be the way to go and probably a Z7 for landscapes. The Z mount lenses are well built and beat their F mount counterparts in almost every measure. Going Z mount will drive the price up though so a Pentax K1 II starts to look very appealing. I bought into Nikon Z this year and have been happy with it. My reasons were for access to 600mm stabilized lenses, and for the better tracking AF, but you already have those covered with your D500. For landscapes there isn't any advantage. Pentax K1 has a more flexible screen, better weather sealing, more robust build, built in GPS, astrotracer, pixel shift, and enough sharp weather sealed lenses to do the job well. The K1 body is heavier and a little bigger but Z lenses can be larger and weigh more making it a wash. Resolution difference from 36mp to 45mp is smaller than it sounds. The K1 is aging and the place you will feel it vs Nikon is the operational speed of the camera (writing to storage, image playback, frames per second, buffer depth, and AF) but for landscapes those don't matter. K1 image quality is undeniably high and still holds up against newer cameras, and if you like DSLRs you know that Pentax will soon be the only maker left. If I were in your position I would probably pick up a Nikon Z7 with the Z 24-70mm F4 and the FTZ adapter allowing you to use that 150-600 on either camera. But if you want a DSLR and OVF I would get the K1 II with the 28-105mm. Alternatively the K70 should offer decent image quality. The 18-135 is a convenient lens but I was never satisfied with it's image quality. You could get the new *16-50PLM or the 16-85 and keep shooting APSC for landscapes. I understand the full frame appeal though and I personally sold off all my APSC kit.

Still struggling with AF

Yeah, for that scenario I agree with both clackers and biz-engineer. Switching to a single AF point for a subject that small and far away is the way to go, but so is accepting that it's pretty far away and you need to get closer or wait until the bird comes closer if you want a better shot. The AF tries to grab the closest high contrast spot under the AF point but those points are larger than the little confirmation square in the viewfinder would suggest. With the AF point on the bird it sees the water in front of the bird too. You can try with single spot placing the AF point high on the bird or even just slightly above so it is seeing the bird and the water behind it and choosing the bird because it's closer, rather than the bird and the water in front of it. It's a challenging scenario for any AF system. Solution, get closer, which might seem impossible. It's not, just maybe harder than you are willing to do for that shot.

---------- Post added 11-21-22 at 04:19 PM ----------

I should add that angle matters here too. If you can get lower down close to the surface of the water you change the distance to background which makes the bird stand out more to the AF system. At the angle of your shots the foreground and background are the water right around the bird and are only inches apart. If your lens is inches above the water then the background becomes the far shore and gets nicely blurred away and while the foreground will still be the water and some waves the bird should stick up above them enough to let the AF pick out the bird.

Item for Sale
Pentax K-3 Mark III

Asking Price
1,600.00 CAD

Item Location
Alberta (Canada)

Item Description
Purchased new Dec 2021 for the purpose of shooting birds. Still in excellent condition. Shutter count 16147. Some of the images taken with this camera. Flickr Album

$1600 CAD includes battery, and the USB charger along with the the original box and manuals. For US buyers that works out to somewhere around $1175 USD depending on exchange rates.

Free shipping in North America.

Reason for selling is a decision to reduce my camera collection by letting my APSC gear go. Already sold off 2 K5's and my original K3 and a few lenses, with more still to list. I have more cameras than I can shoot with and just decided it's time to cull the herd.

(Why You Probably Shouldn't) Scan 35mm negatives with bellows and an APS-C camera

I started doing this with a Nikon ES-2 digitizing adapter on my K1 with FA 50mm F2.8 macro and I have found it to work quite well. In Lightroom after you invert the image, also convert it to B&W since what you have is a colour image of a B&W film negative. This will enable sliders for the B&W colour channels and let you adjust each channel separately to fine tune the look of your B&W image. The reversed sliders is bit of pain but you get used to it after a few images. For colour negatives it can be a challenge to get the white balance correct. I start with the Temp and Tint sliders and once they are close, move to the Tone Curves to fine tune it in the Red Blue and Green curves. Once you get one looking good you can copy paste that white balance to the rest of the role of film.

Overall I find I am getting far better detail and sharpness than from my epson v550 scanner so I am willing to put up with the challenges. It is also much faster to snap each frame than to wait for the scanner.

Most used lens for Landscapes?

I like to shoot landscapes with the HDFA35mm and the DFA*50. Both are nice and sharp but the reason for choosing them isn't because my DFA28-105 isn't sharp. I decided I like the look of those focal lengths and being tied to them forces me to work harder on composition rather than just zooming. Basically it helps me to stop being lazy. If I am nitpicking and pixel peeping, yeah those primes are a little sharper but not in any meaningful way at any kind of normal viewing size and distance. I mainly shoot primes because I feel like the challenge of doing it has improved my photography. I also like to shoot wide aperture people shots so these lenses also get used a lot that way too. My 28-105 produces great images though so unless have you some specific use in mind that it can't do, you won't really gain a lot in terms of sharpness. The FA31ltd offers some subtle rendering differences that might be worth it though, and as a prime shooter myself I think trying to learn and make good use of 31mm is a challenge worth undertaking to improve your photos, but don't do it for sharpness.

Portrait Lens - First Family Shoot

Hey very good. Like I said there is no single right way. 70-200 is a very commonly used portrait lens for good reason. The added focal length really helps melt away the background. For editing, again tastes vary, when I don't have fill flash or reflector to lift the shadows on faces I very subtly do it in post processing. It's super easy to overdo it though so subtle is key. As for posing, I am no expert there. I readily admit that as an amateur that is my biggest weakness shooting portraits.
