Let's share shots with Q!

A few recent shots with my Q7 and the 01 prime lens - taken in a combination bookstore/coffee shop in Ashland, Oregon.

In one section, next to the books, there are puppets of famous writers, thinkers and scientists -- including one of my heroes, Albert Einstein---

In another section, one can sit down at a table and leaf through one's new book while sucking down a double espresso or cappuccino. But the individual sitting atop this table seems to have taken the phrase 'Death before Decaf!' a little too seriously---

Or perhaps he is just praying for a double-shot from beyond the grave ;)

In one of my favorite bookstores in Ashland, Oregon (Bloomsbury Books), there is a small section with hand puppets of literary and scientific figures of note. One of my favorites is the Albert Einstein puppet.

In a local coffee shop in Ashland, Oregon, the pre-Halloween decor includes this skeleton - who, for all the world, looks like he is praying for another shot of espresso. Or, as the popular saying goes, "Death before Decaf!"
Taken with the Q7's 'Bold Mono' style.

The in this informal family portrait, my 5-year-old grandson, who normally is a blur of motion, remained still - while his mother was moving at the exact moment the picture was taken. The resulting photograph - with one person in relative focus and the other not - surprised me, and was my favorite image from a small series.

I used to just have my Q7 - but thanks to a generous present from a fellow Pentaxian, I now also have an original Q (though for some time it had some operational worries, which seem to be resolved now).

They make a great pair.

The tiny 8.5mm 01 prime lens continues to surprise me with its quality and rendering. This was taken, at wide open aperture - f/1.7 - in available light, in my kitchen - of a small bowl of new tomatoes, freshly harvested from the garden. The camera is my Q7 - my 2nd Q7, actually, since my first Q7 died from an incurable internal problem - but its oh-so-small sensor also surprises me with its overall IQ.

The camera + lens really render light and shadow nicely.

Item for Sale
Ricoh GR II + GW-3 wide-angle conversion lens + GV-1 viewfinder + accessories

Asking Price
555.55 USD

Item Location
Talent, Oregon (United States)

Item Description
Am selling my lightly-used Ricoh GRII camera - with only 2392 shutter actuations! - along with two best 'must-have' Ricoh accessories for this camera - the GV-1 external viewfinder - and the GW-3 ultra wide-angle conversion lens (along with the GH-3 lens hood, which is part of the wide-angle lens package). Am also including an excellent Wasabi external battery charger + 2 spare (and excellent) Wasabi batteries. Last but not least, I'm including two other great accessories - a small but very comfortable hand strap - and a functional, compact protective camera case (for the camera alone, without viewfinder or the wide-angle conversion lens), which has a convenient belt loop. There is also a high-quality glass screen protector on the rear screen, and another glass protective filter on the front lens.

I'm the 2nd owner and this camera has been treated very, very well in its lifetime. This is the 2nd generation of Ricoh's APS-C GR compact cameras; unlike the GR III, it features both a small built-in pop-up flash - and the +/- vertical rocker switch on the upper right hand side of the rear panel, an incredibly useful (IMHO) control which Ricoh eliminated in the later V3 model of the GR. The high-quality fixed 28mm FOV lens, combined with the excellent sensor, has literally produced what I believe to be some of the best photos I've ever taken. The wide-angle conversion lens gives equally high-quality results. And the small but functional clip-on GV-1 optical viewfinder (which has frame lines for both the 28mm FOV and the wider 21mm FOV of the conversion lens!) is an incredibly useful accessory for those bright sunny days when LED camera screens seem to wash out in the sunshine.

I'm only selling it because I have realized that I haven't been using it anywhere near as much as I originally planned - and a camera this nice truly deserves to be used - and appreciated - more.

I don't honestly know if there is a message.
Or maybe, if there is, it is simply that: a good cup of coffee is a good cup of coffee... no matter where you find it. :)

I've drunk plenty of cups of coffee while driving, 'on the road', but this may be my first cup of coffee ever 'ON the road'.
It was also an excuse to use one of my favorite Q lenses - the 03 Fish-Eye - for a distorted close-up perspective.
And in case anyone is wondering... the coffee was delicious!

I love the combination of the 03 Fish-Eye lens and a Q body.

For most of my shooting, setting the fisheye's focus point approximately halfway (between ultra close-up and infinity) seems to work wonders. In this particular case, I had taken my large (and delicious!) freshly brewed cup of coffee with me out to the mailbox - on the tiny little rural lane next to my house in Oregon - when somehow the idea of coffee-in-the-road came to me.

This is the result.

Another bump for what is not only a great Pentax film camera, but also a superb - and often underrated - lens. I agree with those who think the FA 50mm f/1.7 is right up there with a number of the best class 50mm Takumars (the f/1.4 especially) - and SMC-Pentax lenses (including the truly fine manual focus f/1.7). It's that good.

Price reduced once more in the hopes that a serious Pentaxian who loves great film Pentaxes - and who appreciates the underrated FA 50mm f/1.7 - but who doesn't have a large bank account - will take advantage of this price (well below what I paid for the combination camera body + lens). I want this to go to a good home where it will be not just appreciated but used, too.

Item Description
I think I may be the 2nd owner of both this seriously cool auto film SLR and also of the lens. The lens is in superb shape and truly lives up to its excellent reputation (check the reviews here) as one of the best Pentax 50's ever made. (I've owned and used a handful of fine Takumar and Pentax 50mm lenses and this one really is one of the best.) The camera may be one of the best auto film SLR's made. This one has never suffered from the occasional gear problems which seemed to affect a portion of the MZ's. It's in fine condition and works perfectly.

I'm selling because I've realized that, in spite of my best efforts, I'm really no longer a film or analog shooter - and because this camera is just too nice to sit unused. Especially with this lens - the camera + lens make a great combination.

Priced separately, the lens could sell for at least $150 - and the camera body, in the shape it's in, another $150. My preference is to sell them together - both to make my life easier, and because they work so well together - so I'm offering them at what I hope is a reduced and fair price, for fellow Pentaxians and PentaxForum members. Price now lowered to $225

Any questions, please ask. Shipping will be split between seller and buyer; PayPal is my preferred choice for payments.

Point and Shoot Competition #158 - Playing and Games

There weren’t many entries in this competition, but all of them are interesting – and worthy of multiple viewings.

I like Bart’s board-game shot. It looks like what I imagine a futuristic version of the giant life-sized chessboard in Alice in Wonderland might look like – if the game was being played by futuristic travelers from a distant galaxy. It’s mysterious – but the mystery seems offset by the normalcy of parts of the background. Cool effect.

I also love the idea of a game called, “If it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium’. I think it would be fun to start an entire photo thread devoted to the game, although that might be a bit tricky. I like the contrast between all those people packed like sardines into the boat beneath the bridge where only one or two are standing.

I really love the fishing photograph, too, Bart – but I suspect some fishermen or fisher-persons might take offense if you called fishing a ‘game’. On the other hand, many might laugh and agree with you!

Vendee’s Monopoly + Chess shot is quite cool. It also suggests a fantasy universe (Alice in Wonderland, anyone?) where giant clear Chess Pieces must face off against the classic cars, boats, hats, shoes and dogs from Monopoly. It’s an image which stimulates my brain cells as well as entertains my eyes.

kwb's Pinball shot – of a Pinball machine on display in an ultra-wide-angle shot of a section of the San Francisco airport which happens to be framed on either side by moving pedestrian walkways really took me by surprise. I kept coming back to look at it, again and again, and each time I saw something a little different. One of the (many) things I like about it is how an ordinary ‘game’ – a pinball machine – can be transformed into a combination sculpture – slash educational exhibit – inside an airport which is nothing if not filled with technology. Old tech on display in a new tech universe. And as anyone who’s ever played Pinball knows, it can be a very addictive game.

barondla's close-up of the tiny Wonder Woman doll, between a gigantic thumb and fingers, is interesting for many reasons, and not just the stylized processing which really works to make the image stand out. It definitely earns extra marks for creativity and originality and I kept thinking that at any moment, Wonder Woman would come to life in the stylized ‘posterized’ universe this photograph creates.

I also really like kwb’s ‘horse race’ at a minor league baseball game. I’ve seen similar races at minor-league ball games near the small Oregon town where I live and they are almost the best (and always the funniest) part of going to the ball park. I also like the fact that the normal players in the field seem to be ignoring the ‘race’ – but the big-headed Team Mascot is giving them its full attention from the finish line. Nice image, kwb!

Judging is not easy and after spending a lot of time looking at and relooking at all the images – each of which is so worthy in so many ways – the winner of this Competition is kwb’s photograph of the pinball machine on display in the middle of the San Francisco airport. It’s an unusual and unique interpretation of the theme – and additionally it’s simply a great composition. barondla also deserves a special mention for the unique and striking processing in that cool image. And I keep wondering about what Vendee’s Monopoly+Chess world would be like to visit…

My congratulations to kwb – and my thanks to everyone else, for some inspired entries and interpretations of the theme. (I keep thinking wondering what comes after, “if it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium” – what happens on Wednesday, for example? If it’s Wednesday, this must be…? Hmmmm
