Nature A 360 image of Perseid Meteor Showers

I hadn't thought of using a Theta to do whole sky night shots, so thank you for this great shot. Out of interest, what settings did you use? There doesn't seem to be much star trailing, so I assume less than 30 seconds? Also, the noise looks pretty well controlled, or did you have to reduce noise in post processing? Thank you for posting!

Yes, when the conditions on the coast are just right, nature does a very fine rendition of those designs.

Its a spot on the island that I visit quite regularly, so it was mainly a case of being in the right place at the right time, and a good dose of luck that everything was aligned so nicely.

I love macro images and seeing the difference looking closely at something familiar can render it almost alien to the eye...

The small island in the centre of the shot is Stubbs Island, which sits at the confluence of the Weynton Passage, Cormorant Channel, Queen Charlotte Strait and Blackfish Sound, located off the NE Coast of Vancouver island.

I love the way the light and mist combines to produce subtle layering of the islands and mountains.

You are looking out on an Ocean channel, about 6 kms wide, but fogged in, and there are small ripples from a passing boat superimposed on the calm water...

A beautiful calm morning as the day dawned over north eastern Vancouver Island. This is looking out over the Cormorant Channel towards Cormorant Island and Alert Bay, British Columbia, Canada. Taken from Sointula, on Malcolm island at around 6 am.

I was very lucky when I drove down Kaleva road this morning. I turned off the road onto a small space and wandered down onto the beach with my camera. A few seconds later, it couldn't have been more than 20-30, this Minke whale surfaced and I snapped this image. It was calm and still at this time, and a little misty as well. It was quite the lovely moment.

Why would a lens work on one K5 body and not another?

Good question, which will have to wait a little while before I can try other lenses, as I only have this one screw drive lens with me at the moment.

Thank you, it seems as if it is not extending as much as the other body, so this is something I will explore.

I've tried for 20 minutes and it seems as if it isn't going to magically pop up that extra little distance so it can work. Probably time to think about saving my pennies for a new body anyway...

it wasn't as noticeable without employing a magnifying loop, but the one K5 body that works has about 0.5mm more extension of the screw drive contact than the other one. I assume that's unlikely to be an easy fix though... But it does explain the difference between the two. Thank you!

If I switch to manual focus, it is a little stiff, but focuses okay. Switching back to AF-S or AF-C just spins the wheels...

I picked up a Sigma APO 135-400mm f4.5-5.6 lens for a song last week and it finally arrived today in the post. I was concerned that it was too cheap to be working, and when I attached it to me my K5 body the AF didn't work at all. It sounds like the screw drive isn't attached to the lens and it is just spinning freely. My other K5 body, works just fine. Both bodies have the 1.16 firmware, and looking at the contacts and screw drive mechanism, they both look the same. Anyone experienced something like this and have any suggestions on what may be the issue or how to fix it?

Looking at the reviews on B&H it seems a few people have had major software issues, but they don't mention what OS they are using. Most of the reviews are very good however. Have you suffered similar software issues?

These are so called Northern resident Orca, found along the coast of British Columbia. Some of the pods of Orca engage in beach rubbing, including at a beach only 500 metres away from where this photo was taken. But these particular Orca only eat salmon, and are not a threat to mammals in any way. That includes humans and dogs!
