This is not the same model as yours, but it shows where you need to get to tighten the screws.

The K100D or K100Ds would be similar to the performance of your camera with added features (like shake reduction). The K200D has a better sensor (10M), but lower high ISO with the added feature of weather resistance. The K-X adds more mega pixels and very good high ISO performance and video too. All of the listed cameras will use the same batteries that you have now. This list starts with low price and goes up.

You will know that the internal battery has gone flat when on power up (preferably with an A/C wall plug adapter), the camera will ask for date and time. The wall adapter is the accessory that will bypass battery issues and show you what is really going on. You said that you tried this and got the same symptoms. Unfortunately, this does indeed sound like a board problem. You could buy a used Pentax, but the K-30 is looking mighty nice.

This thread has much to say about the DL and battery problems. Worth a read, IMHO. What type of battery do you use? Have you tried Eneloops?

I never had this problem with my DL. Sounds like you need to get to the operating system and force a reset. I don't know how to do this when the menus don't work.
Something to try. Remove the batteries and let the camera sit. It may need to sit a LONG time, because you need to let the battery that keeps the clock (and other stuff) running go completely flat. After that battery goes dead, the main board will reset on power up. If that does not work, you may have a mainboard problem. Cheaper to replace the camera than have it repaired.

Using spray electrical contact cleaner with the thin red tube attached to the spray head seems to work too. Good that you got yours working. Faster than sending it in under warranty.

If you take the lens apart, use sticky tape to hold the little gold contacts to the lens mount. They tend to fall out and go everywhere. Just put a piece of tape across the contacts, push it down well to make sure it's stuck, and trim if needed to get to the screws.

Anyone have a K-r with persistent front-focus issues and actually get it fixed?

I sent my K-R to Pentax service with the same problems that you describe. Pentax service had it for more than a month, but it came back improved. It still FF in tungsten, but really not that bad. In the first ten months that I had it, I got so many lost (blown focus) shots, that I really don't trust it, bad memories. When the people wanted to see the shots I took, that camera made me look like an idiot. I thought about sending it in, but I kept reading about what your friend experienced, that Pentax service sent it back with no repair. I thought that I would wait until it was close to the end of the warranty hoping that Pentax would figure out a fix. Sounds like they didn't. Perhaps it depends on who fixes it. I know in my line of work that some techs are better than others. I haven't tested the K-R very much since it came back, just some simple stuff, but it does seem much better. I'm still mad about my K-R, and really don't use anymore. The K-R 'turned me off' to Pentax, so much so that I researched switching, but the cost of replacing lenses was too much... I bought a K-5.

What Duracell charger do you have. I found that the Sanyo charger that comes with a set of Eneloops charges cells in pairs. That means that the cells will only charge up to the level of the pair. As an experiment, I charged a set of Eneloops with the Sanyo charger and then let them cool, and then put them into a Duracell CEF 23 charger. This particular Duracell charger charges each cell individually. As expected, two of the cells showed full charge almost immediately, the third cell showed full charge in about 5 min. The last cell charged for almost 1/2 hour! Because the Pentax cameras that take AA batteries use them in series, one low cell will shorten the run time for all. This why people recommend the Maha, etc.

The best one I heard: "It's the Japanese equivalent of the Leica". And when you get the response "Lika?" just say "It's very exclusive". The snobby ones will go out and buy it.

Check and see if the aperture lever is bent. If the lens lever is bent it can miss the camera lever.

When I first got into photography, cameras typically were sold with a normal lens. Zooms were fancy new expensive things. There is something to be said for a normal lens. A normal lens gives a very pleasing perspective that is different from your 50mm. The larger aperture can allow shots in lower light levels, that the kit lens won't be able to get, but still have a wider view than your 50. The Pentax 35mm f/2.4 is a low cost normal lens for your K200D that is reviewed very well. Something to think about.

Disable SR when using a tripod. Why?

I'm going to guess here. Back when I worked in a research lab, the control circuits that we used in our load frames had a small amount of electronic 'noise' in the feed-back loop. That is to say that the feed-back circuit could introduce a small false signal to the control circuit, causing the control to react to a deviation that didn't exist, we called this 'dithering'. This problem was most apparent when trying to hold a steady state, either load or extension. During dynamic operation, this was never a problem. I suspect that the Pentax SR does the same thing, electronic 'noise' will cause 'dithering' (sensor movement) in the steady state (no movement) that the tripod provides. I have no proof of this, only my take on a possible cause.

Every big city has a tourist spot, the 'Magnificent Mile' in Chicago is a good example. Every time I've gone there I've seen at least one person with a DSLR. I was there yesterday and saw a man with a Nikon and large zoom, and that was at 7:45 AM! The people in areas like that assume the shooter to be a tourist and pretty much ignore photographers because they are common. This type of location is where you go to shoot to gain confidence. The more the do it the easier it becomes.
I agree with Ratmagiclady that a smaller camera is less noticed. You could try a DA 40mm or a DA 21mm, both are small, and either would fit in a pocket while you shoot with the other. I think a DA 70mm would work as well, but I don't own one so that is a guess. I use a black camera strap that doesn't stick out like the bright red Pentax on the OEM strap, and I sometimes wrap the strap around my wrist and carry the camera by hand.

Did you set the aperture ring to the 'A' position? You may have to push a button on the aperture ring to move it to the 'A' position.

"slack" lens?

I needed some grease for an underwater housing and the price was very high from the manufacturer. I bought some silicone grease at a plumbing supply house. This grease has interesting properties, non-toxic, water does not degrade it, maintains viscosity across a wide temperature range and does not dry out - or so it says on the label. I thought about this for a lens helicoid, but have not needed to dampen a lens. You might want to investigate this as an alternative.

Disposable cameras make a Holga look good. Get a Canonette G3 or a Yashica Electro. My parents used a Canonette, and my brother-in-law had a Yashica Electro and both took good pics. There are many others that will do a much better job than disposables. Look on ebay.

I own the K200D. I can understand why you would want more resolution for large prints. I would get the K20D. Same sensor, less money. No blur at medium shutter speeds, see link.
