I took better images of the "Little Mermaid" stuck in ice but I have yet to find them. I have close to 1 million negatives and slides accumulated over 55 years.

Year in, year out, we get at least 10 feet of snow every winter. In March 2019 we had a ridiculous amount of snow (18 feet) accumulated during this particular winter.

My brother and me exchanged our Minolta cameras and photographed each other in Montreal near Place Ville-Marie. I took his picture with his SR T-101 while he took my picture with my XE-7. He was never very good at adjusting critical focus on his images, as you can see. The XE-7 was in A mode and took good care of the exposure on K25.

I went to Montreal to attend the yearly Automobile Show during the winter of 1979 with my brother and sister-in-law. We walked outside in Downtown Montreal and I took a picture of the "Lttle Mermaid" statue stuck in ice in front of Place Ville-Marie and then exchanged cameras with my brother so he could take a picture of me with my XE-7 and me, a picture of him with his Minolta SR T-101 camera. He was never very good at finding critical focus though ... lol !

Hello Ken,

Did you ever photograph the "Roy's Motel" sign in Amboy. I saw it lighted while going across Amboy in 2017 early at sunrise.

You should get a set of Extention Tubes or even a set of Auto Bellows to get more magnification. Your image is SWELL but one can get much closer to immobile subjects. Spraying some water always helps ...

After driving across Canada, from Quebec City to Vancouver, B.C., I entered the U.S. on Interstate-5 in Washington State and drove south towards California. I switched to Route 101 and stopped on the shore of the Pacific on July 5th, 1979. The discovery of the Pacific Ocean was a milestone of my life. Minolta XE-7 + MD 35 mm f/1.8 @ f/8 on Kodachrome 25.

Landscape First visit to Death Valley National Park, California in 1979.

I visited Death Valley several times, always with strange things happening every time. In 1998, they experienced a maximum temperature of 130 degrees F at the beginning of August, the day a Marathon was held in the Valley on a Sunday. Runners dropped like flies in such horrendous temperatures. They recommend you stay put, resting quietly in the shade, and drink plenty of water. My silver gray Mercury Villager van behaved brilliantly in such a high temp range.

In 2019, I was thinking of spending the night at the campground next to the Visitors Center. I set up for the night around 8h30 PM when it became dark but the temperature was still 125 degrees F and I had no A/C. I opened my back tailgate as well as my 2 sliding doors but to no avail. Then bats started bomb-diving incessantly on the metal roof of my Dodge Caravan. After 30 minutes of enduring this "torture", I got up, tidyed inside my van and drove out of Death Valley. I finished my night in the Parhump, NV Walmart parking lot where it was "only" 95 degrees F ...

I tried different exposures (varying distance, aperture, full or half power output, etc). In this era, manual electronic flashes had a Guide Number you used to adjust your aperture according to distance as a function of film speed. I could use "half power" to shorten the duration of the flash too. This image was the best among 4 or 5 pictures I tried (best framing with a fixed 35 mm prime, reasonable distance as it was somewhat hot and dangerous, well-performing aperture, fixed 1/60 sec shutter speed, 25 ISO, etc).

Unless you fell on an exceptionally sharp copy, you should get rid of your DA 50-200 mm f/4-5.6 zoom too. You won't get much money in return but your "connoisseur" image won't suffer any more ... lol ! Great equipment you gathered !

I think their processing required the use of a chemical that was banned for environmental purposes. So the film was discontinued in 2010.

My Minolta cameras always provided spot-on exposures on Kodachrome film (particularly the XE-7). In later years, I switched to Minoltas X-700 (I have 4) and negative color film (Fujicolor mainly) and exposures were always excellent.

I returned to Death Valley in comparable temperature ranges in July or August 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019 with Dodge Grand Caravans and these newer vehicles had no problem handling the heat. I use Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil, which helps a lot. I could use full A/C with my newest 2017 Caravan without any sign of overheating. The 2012 model behaved quite well also although it could not maintain the 60 degrees F air conditioning is supposed to provide but the Pentastar V6 didn't overheat either.

Three Kodachrome 25 images of my journey through Death Valley in July 1979. Minolta XE-7 + MD 35 mm f/1,8 wide-angle and MD 50-135 mm f/4 zoom. My 1978 Ford F150 pick-up with a 351 V8 kept overheating when I was climbing hills. My radiator was not big enough to "survive" 125 degree F heat and I started using Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil only the next year in 1980. I had to stop and spend the day resting in the shade and drive only at night when temperature dropped to 105 deg F. The sky was exceptionally clear and I spent the evening admiring a myriad of stars I had never seen before.
