Your Best Photo+: RICOH IMAGING has renewed the condition of “Your best photo”.

Actually I do not submit images anywhere as you described. I stopped posting images here long ago, and I stopped posting images on Facebook long before that. And I decided from Day One not to join Instagram for the same underlying reasons. I only post images on my website; I post links to my images occasionally on Facebook (but I have come to dislike Facebook and haven't posted much there in the past year.) Many photographers do not post their images on social media and the like, and there have been many articles written against the idea of allowing publishers of various sorts to publish your images "for exposure" or "on spec."

This is a personal preference decision and if another person feels 180 degrees differently that's fine with me. There are good arguments for both approaches; each person just has to pick what makes sense for her or him. Photographers who chose no to let their work out for free, however, are not overwrought in their decisions. Here are an article and a video that address both perspectives:

This is How People in Other Industries Respond When Asked for Free Spec Work

FYI: this is written in a friendly tone :)

This intrigues me . . . I still miss my Hasselblad square format years. I do not have a DA 15mm Limited. What are the pixel dimensions of the files resulting from that combination?

I "singled in" with a Hasselblad 501c and an 80mm for seven or eight years. It became a photographically symbiotic relationship.

Is Pentax in the need of a M/L system?

I had occasion to photograph speakers standing at a podium during a conference last Friday and Saturday. I shot the event with my K-1 and work's Canon 5D Mark IV. I was eager to use the K-1 with Live View and focus peaking, using the flexible back screen for composition. I'd never shot an event using that technique before so I gave it a try. For composing and watching the speaker using the back screen at waist level, or even while seated with the camera above me and the screen tilted downward was a dream come true. I didn't have to hunch over and peer through the OVF, because the camera was on a tripod. With my finger at the ready on the shutter, however, the lag time between seeing the shot, tripping the shutter, and exposure resulted in missing hand gestures and facial expressions that I rarely miss through the OVF. I went back to using the OVF the traditional way and my hit rate went right back to where it usually is. Maybe my Live View technique was wrong, but it was not working in that situation.

On an unrelated (to mirrorless) note, I did settle on using the Mark IV most of the time for this occasion. I found the ease of relocating the focus point quickly using the back button designated specifically for that purpose to be extremely useful. The other reason was my older Soligor 70-210mm zoom for my K-1 was manual focus, while the Mark IV allowed me to employ an auto focus L series 70-200. The latter is a better lens, plus my aging eyes are finding manual focus getting harder and harder.

Another salvo fired in the mirrorless medium format world? What can Fuji possibly be thinking? Certainly there's no market for a camera like this!!! ;-)

Clicking on the video with the selfie article, I first had to view an advertisement video for a funeral home. Bizarre coincidence. I tried it again and the second time I got an advertisement for a Photoshop workshop.

I do not know enough to hold a strong enough opinion one way or the other, but I sense it is a critical time in company history; I could be wrong. I'm fairly neutral when it comes to Pentax, yet hopeful at the same time. Some Pentax digital cameras have fared very well, others less so (K-S1, for example, based upon user reviews here at PF). The marketplace will decide, and a little more than a year ago Nikon took quite a financial bashing despite offering some very capable cameras. Fuji and Sony, meanwhile, held their own and more with innovative, new cameras.

I can only speak to my experiences. For my needs I have been very happy with Pentax. I loved my K-5 and still use it occasionally. I am more than pleased with my K-1. I bought a K-01 for a very specific purpose, but didn't use it much as I redefined my project. (It came in handy, though, for my daughter working on a video documentary for a college internship, but it didn't perform as well as other cameras used by other students performing the same type of video work.) I was very happy with my year spent using the 645D, and only wish I could explore the 645Z or its eventual replacement.

Any opinion I would form about a new Pentax camera would be relevant to my needs only at the time I need to make that decision about any new gear I would need for a new project. I would form my opinion when that comes time, enough so to make my next purchase, based upon research on then-current options and what would look to be its future-forward viability.

I don't follow what Pentax (or other manufacturers for that matter) on what they offer or may be offering solely for my own potential purchases. I'll likely keep shooting with my K-1 beyond the Mark II or Mark III, or the eventual foray into mirrorless. I watch because the sustainability of the brand is also rooted in what newcomers to photography and/or those who want to upgrade have available to them as options. They are future Pentax lens buyers and new models buyers, too. Any brand has to hold its own against the competition despite its vaulted history. Just ask Nikon.

I am by no means aware of the engineering or financial aspects of what I about to write; I'm just writing conceptually.

First, Mister Obvious: the number one appeal of going mirrorless is getting rid of the mirror. Why? That eliminates internal vibrations caused by mirror slap. And what cameras have the biggest issue with mirror slap? Cameras with the biggest mirrors. That, to me in this thought exercise, is where Pentax should target its mirrorless efforts: the 645 and, to really go out on a limb, a 67 mirrorless . . . and maybe even full frame for those formats. Medium format keeps Ricoh/Pentax in its wheelhouse without having to tackle the likes of Sony, Nikon, and Canon. It's not an open playing field, with Fujifilm, Hasselblad, and Leica already in the mix.

The second main advantage to mirrorless cameras is autofocus, using the image sensor for focusing. While more accurate, this tends to be slower. And slower working methods are the norm when using medium format.

The weak spot, for me, with mirrorless cameras to date has been the EVF—which have been so bad they would make me give up photography if they were my only choice. Just terrible! But these seem to be improving, so if Ricoh can design or acquire a top notch EVF *and* make the camera easy to use tethering for studio situations, then that seems like a potential winner.

I'm sure there are flaws in my description and flies in the ointment, but it seemed worth sharing. I think what Ricoh would learn in developing a mirrorless MF camera could then be brought to a future FF (36 mm × 24 mm) camera.

If it were my company, I would be looking at what constructive criticisms my brand receives in the marketplace—then prioritize them and address them. So rather than wondering about which camera body or style is coming next, I'd be hoping/wishing for improved continuous autofocus. From what I've read here and around the Web it's debatable . . . and that's the problem. Ricoh needs to improve Pentax autofocus significantly so that it is no longer debatable.

Continuous autofocus isn't my top priority; in fact, I've never used it. For many photographers, however, it is and thus they go to another brand. Remove the debate through product improvement and marketing, and sales should improve.

Wash, rinse, and repeat for video.

The jump to a 645 would not be as different as a jump to a view camera would be. The 645 cameras are still SLR cameras with viewfinders and pentaprisms. A view camera is a completely different mechanism.

Indeed . . . but for my art prints I have been following some guidelines set out by Jeff Schewe in his book, The Digital Print. I try to stick to the printer's native printing resolution for my art prints. For other prints I don't worry about it. Schewe wrote,
The Finest Detail option is unique to Epson (although Canon pro printers also have a high-resolution reporting option as well). Normally, the Epson printer’s reported resolution is 360 dots per inch, and the Epson Pro printers actually have 360 nozzles per inch on the printhead. When you select Finest Detail, the driver reports to the print pipeline that the printer is a 720-dots-per-inch device. This is a critical thing to understand. If you were printing a textural fine-detailed image and the native resolution, uninterpolated, is above 360 pixels per inch, you’d want to upsample to 720 and select Finest Detail" [page 186]. He notes later in the book that if a image scaled for printing has a resolution higher than 360 dpi (his example has a print resolution of 424 dpi), he sets the Print Resolution in the Print Job panel in Lightroom to 720 dpi and sets the Output Resolution to 2880 dpi to create the best possible print [page 248].

I checked your third link to read about my iPhone 8 plus and it's 4032 x 3024 (4:3). Printing at 300 dpi, that would be a native 13.44 x 10.08-inch print. I do not find any store offering a mat opening that's 13" x 10". 12" x 9" mat openings factors into the aspect ratio for a setting of 336 dpi. Who on earth prints at 336 dpi? (Okay, I just set myself up for someone to say "I do!") Epson's incremental dpi setting is based upon 360 dpi, which is what I use. (Incremental meaning print driver settings of 360, 1440, 2880 dpi.)

It's just a strange mathematical world!

Yesterday,
All my lenses seemed so far away.
Now it seems a new one's on its way.
Oh I believe,
In yesterday

Suddenly,
It's not quite the price it used to be.
There's a discount hanging over me.
Oh yesterday,
Came suddenly.

Why she had to glow
I don't know,
eBay didn't say.
I clicked "By Me" strong.
Now I'm glad,
For yesterday.

Yesterday,
Zoom was so more I'd have to pay.
Now I have some cash to stash away.
Oh I believe,
In Yesterday.

Thanks for the heads up! I went straight to eBay after reading your notice and pulled the plug on the D FA 28-105mm that never seems to go on sale. I've been watching this lens for some time because it will be perfect for a cemetery documentation project I will be working on, and for an upcoming trip overseas. I bought it from Adorama's eBay page and saved $74.54 ($422.41) . . . and it was the last one they had in stock.

I believe Ansel Adams used a variety of film formats, perhaps mostly 8x10 sheet film (4:5 ratio). Large format cameras start with 4x5-inch sheet film. 5x7-inch cameras were favored with high end landscape photographers, too. This ratio was very popular for landscape photography. I wanted a 5x7 view camera for a long time but never could afford one. I would have been relegated to 5x7 contact printing, though, because then you have to buy a 5x7 or larger enlarger.

The 645 and 67 medium formats originate from the 120 format for roll film. 645 was shorthand for 6 x 4.5 cm, with a 3:2.22222 ratio; 67 was for 6 x 7 cm, with a ratio of 4:3.33333. The 6x7 is closer to square (1:1 ratio) than 645.

Pentax 645D and 645Z have 4:3 ratio sensors; K-1 and APS-C Pentax cameras have 3:2 ratio; Pentax Q at full resolution is 4:3.
