Has anyone used a Bowens Illumitran Slide Copier for digital copy of slides and negatives? These units were made for 35mm film cameras and can be picked up on ebay. Just attach a digital body and use the original Schneider copy lenses and the built in flash tube. See for info: Slide Copying FAQs

Mine came with firmware version 1.01 which I updated to 1.07. Very happy with the performance so far. I really like the added function of the battery grip with the ability to load AA battery's. Previous digital Pentax cameras are the ist DS and the K-01.

What a deal on K-5 IIs package

Just received a package from Adorama. $596.95 for K-5 IIs body, D-BG4 Battery grip, Lexar 64 GB Class 10 SDXC card, Pentax AF-200FG flash, Pentax Gadget Bag, Tiffen DFX filter software and Pentax 2 year Extended Warranty. What a deal...thanks Adam for pushing these venders to put together package deals on great equipment. Can't wait to put it to use.

Have to wait till Chistmas. I saw this deal only for 1-2 days and glad I jumped on it. I have had Pentax gear for over 40 years and like the fact that I have the last flagship to bear the Pentax name front and back. I also considered the K-3 with the flu card but decided it wasn't worth the extra $$. I hope to tether the k-5 with PK Tether instead.

Is PK-Tether configured for the K-01 now? I didn't see it in the list of supported Pentax cameras.

Slide Copy with Bowens Illumitran

I have used an old Bowens Illumitran copier with my Pentax ist ds body to copy old slides and negatives. These are still available on Ebay. Since these units have a flash tube and are calibrated for copy work you can get even illumination and color temperature. I hook the camera up to my PC and am able to review the results immediately. Sure saves time if you have a lot of old stuff to copy. Mine came with a Schneider copy lens so all you need is a Pentax K mount adapter. Anyone else tried using one of these units?

Peak focusing and auto zoom works very nicely with my 50mm 1.4 lens on a K-01. You work in the manual mode with peak focusing set on and auto zoom set on. When focusing your manual lens press the OK button and the screen zooms 2x for fine focusing...press again and it goes back to full frame. This allows critical focusing and is very precise.

3-year extended warranty reminder!

You can register your camera on the Pentax website....they just ask for camera model, serial number, month/year of purchase, name, and address. However, this is not required to be elgible for warranty service. What about new cameras purchased on ebay? Will Pentax honor that or does the purchase have to be from an authorized dealer?

I have gotten excellent results with a 70-300 Tamron macro lens on my K-01. The firmware update was a big improvement in focusing.

K-01 Advice Needed

Video quality with the K-01 is very good but you need to really read the instructions and develop the right technique in focusing and zooming manually. This camera has many more settings than the Panasonic point and shoot and the K-01 does not have automatic focusing during video recording. Zooming and focus really need to be manual because you get feedback in the stereo microphones from the motor. This can be offset thru use of a wireless microphone or a exterior stereo mic. (there is an audio input on the body). I have a DMC-ZS3 and with the smaller sensor it is relatively easy to get sharp videos compared to the larger sensor in the K-01 but if you want to have more creative control get the K-01.

I have a K-01 and it is a lot of camera for the money. I really do not miss the optical finder. Works great with my old glass and really does well with video...better than other Pentax models. I also have an ist DS. It is a great camera for use with old glass. You have to make sure that the e dial is not gummed up before purchasing a well used body. This is a very common problem with the older pentax dslrs.
