Pentax DA 50mm/1.8 vs. FA 50mm/1.4 vs. F 50mm/1.7

I went for the FA 50/1.4 because I mostly use a 50mm lens on APS-C as a portrait lens. It has much smoother bokeh than the 50/1.7 versions, even if the 1.7 is sharper wide open. Really the DOF from either lens is so shallow wide open that for portraits I'm stopping down anyway. Usually somewhere from f/2.2 to f/4 depending on the situation. Just use a hood on the 1.4 and it's fine.

FA 50mm F1.7

The respective F and FA versions of the 50/1.4 and 50/1.7 are optically the same. Any difference in review numbers comes down to variations in different people's subjective ratings. The FA 1.4 is much more common than the F 1.4, and the F 1.7 is much more common than the FA 1.7.

The 1.4 lenses really need a hood, and a lot of people saying they get soft results at wide apertures don't use a hood. The front element of the 1.7 lenses is more recessed so it has a but of a built-in hood effect. The 1.7 is still a bit sharper at wider apertures but the hood helps the 1.4 a ton.

I chose the 1.4 over the 1.7 because the 1.4 has much smoother bokeh. The 1.7 has somewhat busy bokeh. 50mm on APS-C is a short-ish portrait focal length so bokeh was important to me.

The DA 50/1.8 is also worth considering because its bokeh quality is somewhere between the 1.4 and 1.7, but with its newer coatings it has the lowest CA/PF.

Advice on Lens Purchase

The DA 35/2.4 and 50/1.8 are both good choices. I use my 35 more as a general purpose lens and my 50 for portraits. So if you're just getting one, I suggest the 35.

Assuming you want AF...

Sigma 24/2.8 Super Wide II
Pentax F or FA 28/2.8
Pentax FA Limited 31/1.8
Pentax FA 35/2
Pentax DA 35/2.4

I currently use the FA 35/2. I also have had a DA 35/2.4, and they have nearly identical optical designs. The 35/2.4 has newer coatings that help reduce CA/PF somewhat. The 35/2 has the faster aperture and a metal lens mount compared to the 35/2.4's plastic mount.

The 35/2.4 is nice and sharp wide open which helps with it being slightly slow, but I ended up going for the FA since I wanted the faster aperture.

You could also look at the Tamron 70-200/2.8. It doesn't have HSM like the Sigma, but the camera should be able to autofocus more reliably than you're getting with the 55-300, because of the brighter f/2.8 aperture. Your 55-300 has a max aperture of f/5.8 at 300mm so with the 70-200/2.8 you've got over 2 stops more light hitting the AF sensor.

New Here Please help choose my first Lense for K-01

Lenses with that much of a zoom range like 28-200mm are compromises. They sacrifice optical quality for having that much of a range in one lens. If you mostly want this additional lens for the extra reach, and you already have other lenses that cover the wide angle range, you can get much better results from something that sacrifices some range on the wide end as these tend to have better optical quality.

I have the Pentax F 70-210. It's really nice optically, and can be had for <$100 used. But its AF is a bit clunky when used inline view mode on my K-r so I'm not sure it's be the greatest choice for a K-01 which only has live view.

The Pentax DA 55-300 is also pretty nice and I'd wager it would work better with the K-01's live view AF. It comes in two versions. The DA has a green stripe on the barrel, a metal lens mount, and quick shift AF. This lets you manually focus the lens without having to flip the camera body to MF. On the K-01, you could sue the camera's AF to get you in the ballpark, and then tweak with MF if needed. There's a cheaper DA L version which loses quick shift, steps down to a plastic lens mount, and has a silver stripe on the barrel. It's got the same optics as the DA version, but is cheapened because it's typically sold in kits rather than on its own. You can however get it new from various online camera stores (who also sell on ebay) like Adorama.

Pentax DA* 300mm F4 Review

The F* 300/4.5 is the lightest of the bunch. It includes a built-in extending hood and weighs 880g (this may be without the tripod foot).

F* 300/4.5 ED [IF]

The FA* 300/4.5 is the same length as the F* but has a narrower barrel and weighs a bit more at 935g. It has a separate hood so that weight may be without the hood.

FA* 300/4.5 ED [IF]

The DA* 300/4 is about an inch longer, and per crewl1's post above weighs 1168g with hood.

DA* 300/4 ED [IF] SDM

For frame of reference, most of the 20-55mm primes weigh somewhere around 150-250g.
