DA* 50-135 AF died

Okay, so here's an update. I fiddled with the lens on and off yesterday without success but hoping it would start working. Today I put the lens on my K-5 and at first it was unresponsive. After several tries to get it to autofocus it started working. I put it on my K-3ii and it continues to work. It seems a bit noisier than I remember so I still think something isn't quite right, kind of squeaky. At this point I will just keep using it. If I do have the same problem in the near future I think I will just have it converted. It wouldn't be worth $300 to have the motor fixed and then wonder when it would go out again. I just don't understand why it would stop working and then work again. Any ideas? I'm glad it started working but it does make me nervous thinking about being on a vacation and it stopping again. The pictures I took yesterday turned out surprisingly well using manual focus. I don't use manual focus much anymore so I'm a bit out of practice.

My favorite lens, the DA* 50-135 stopped autofocusing today. What a disappointment for a lens that isn't that old. I read all the warnings about the AF motor being bad but thought I might luck out and not have that problem. For those who have had the same problem where did you get yours fixed and about how much did it cost?

I also did a reset on my camera after having problems the first time. I've had it happen since then.

Randy - what setting are you talking about (turning off the exposure setting linking to auto focus)? Where is that in the menus?

I'm not sure what the shutter count was when I took the picture, it was taken last year. I've had it happen since then, I just posted that one as an example. It is not just a little overexposed, it is totally blown out. As I mentioned before I never had this issue with my K-5.

No I did not because I thought it was out of warranty and it doesn't happen all the time. Camera working fine and then bam I get a bad one (or several in a row). See attached picture.

Let us know what Ricoh replies. I agree, to spend that amount of money on a camera and to have so many issues is a horrible reflection on the company. I never had any issues with my K-5 and I still use it on occasion. I still get the overexposure stuff but nothing like you have. When you're on a trip or shooting something else important you depend on your camera to work. We can't always carry back up cameras with us because we can't trust the one we're using not to fail us. I'm hoping that Ricoh takes these complaints seriously so when they bring out their next crop sensor camera it will be a good one that we can depend on.

double exposing

OMG. I don't remember changing the drive mode recently and just took pictures a few days ago that were fine. I never used that mode before and didn't even know it was an option as I only have ever used single shot, timed, or continuous modes. Thanks for your help. Now I feel stupid, but at least I don't have to get my camera repaired. I did have the mirror flop thing happen once about 9 months ago but it's been okay since. Thanks again.

double exposing

Went to take my pet's Halloween pictures today and my K-3ii started double exposing. I would shoot one picture and then the next picture would be exposed over the first picture. Then the next picture would be fine and then the next one would be exposed over that one. I tried shutting on/off the camera. I tried a different lens. I switched memory card slots. I used a different card. What the _____? I had to use my K-5 for the photo shoot, which has been my most dependable camera. The K-3ii has been questionable on reliability since I got it a couple years ago. Now this. Any suggestions to try before I send it in for repairs? Also, where is a reliable repair place? I live in Minnesota, so a local shop would be preferred. If I can't find anything local please suggest a good repair place to send it to.

photo contest with K3ii

I have a K-3ii and would like to, for the first time, submit a photo for the October contest. The rules state that the photo cannot exceed 800x533 for vertical shots. My photo dimensions are 6016x4000 (RAW). How do I maintain the whole image and get it to those dimensions? I develop in Lightroom. The rules also state a max of 1400x1200 pixels so I would also need to adjust for that. Would it be best to do all the dimension adjustments within Lightroom or do it at export when I convert it to jpeg?

I have a K-3ii and have always used Sandisk cards. I have never had one fail yet so I'm very happy with them. The last ones I've used have 95 Mb/s speed. Is that a good speed card to use for that camera or should I be using a faster one?

I was going to attach a picture but I don't have enough upload space so I will just describe it. I was shooting my daughter sitting on a rocky cliff in fairly bright conditions. My camera was set in Av priority at 9.0, the ISO was 200, and the speed that the camera chose was 1/15 second. She is totally blown out and you can hardly see her face it's so bright. No detail at all. I believe I was using multi-segmented at the time. If not it was center-weighted. There is no way with the amount of lighting available the camera should have chosen 1/15 of a second.

I don't know what you mean by erroneous ISO setting, but I usually try to stick between ISO 100-400 and sometimes bumping up to 800 or 1600 for lower light. I did do some testing last fall comparing it to my K-5 and also to my sister's camera (not a Pentax, the "C" brand) and the other two cameras seemed to do better exposures than the K-3ii. That was the K3ii I returned and replaced but my current K-3ii does the same overexposure thing. Even in plenty of light outside the speed drops fairly low sometimes. Maybe I got two bad cameras but I still think maybe some setting(s) are causing the inconsistencies and problems. At least I hope so.

Answers to above questions:
The Exposure Compensation is not enabled/active.
Auto EV Compensation is Off.
I have tried all 3 metering modes, mainly multi-segmented, then center-weighted, and some spot.
I don't use an aftermarket focus screen.

How do I check the link AE to AF point?

I don't have any pictures right now as I delete any bad pictures, but I will be shooting some pictures this weekend so we'll see if I get any samples I can post. I always shoot RAW but I could convert to Jpeg.
Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Has anyone else experienced exposure problems with the K-3ii? The metering for exposure seems to be off on the K-3ii. I usually shoot in Av priority but have tried other modes. For some reason, at times, the speed drops way slow and when I take a picture it's quite overexposed. I can switch to M mode to set the speed but it takes more time and trial and error to get the correct exposure. When in Av priority the speed should not be so slow which results in overexposure. It seems like my K-5 was much more reliable with the exposure, I could trust it more. I'm always checking my shots now because I can't trust that the exposure is ever correct on the K-3ii. I sent one camera back because I thought it was defective and got a replacement. Well, this one does the same thing. Other aspects of the K-3ii I like but this exposure thing makes it difficult to enjoy using. If you've had this same experience could you please let me know if you've found any solution or if there are other things to check on the camera? I would like to be able to trust my K-3ii as I did my K-5.

K-3 II overexposing?!?

I think my overexposure problem was different. Everything would be working fine with good exposures and then I'd start to get totally blown out exposures and not just certain areas of the picture, the whole thing. These were with my RAW files not just the jpegs. Then the camera would work fine again for awhile and then I'd have the same thing happen. Ever since I exchanged my camera back in September I have not had the same problem. I think the Ricoh rep was correct when I called them, the camera actuator arm may have been sticking. Anyway I'm glad that I exchanged mine because otherwise I would have had to send it in for repair.

comfortable and safe camera strap

I have a K-3ii and my heaviest lens is my Pentax DA* 60-250 4.0 lens. I have neck and shoulder pain all the time (fibromyalgia) and the strap that comes with the camera is so uncomfortable that I'm in an extreme amount of pain after carrying my camera for a while. I've looked at so many different straps with reviews. The sling ones that attach to only one point on the camera make me nervous (either the tripod connection or one strap loop), but I'm not finding much else that would help solve my problem. Here is a list of them:
Black Rapid
Indigo Marble
Fastfire
Custom
Peak Design
Carry Speed FS-Pro
Luma Labs Cinch
Matin Comfort
Pentax Padded
If anyone has used any of these or has any other suggestions please let me know. I really need to get something else. Thanks for any information you provide.

K3 Crazy Mirror Sickness (Mirror Flapping Lockup) - Report Yours Here!

My K-3ii is only a couple months old after having to send two back because they were in the recalled serial numbers and another that had a different problem I thought I finally got a good copy until this week when I heard the flapping noise that others described as mirror flop. The battery was charged and is the original one that came with the camera. I was shooting single shot in aperture priority. I turned it off and back on and it worked fine. The weather was cold but not terrible. I've never had this happen with my K-5 even in colder weather. I hope it doesn't happen again but I'm definitely more nervous now using the K-3ii over my K-5. Too bad.

K-3 II overexposing?!?

I just sent my K-3II back for exchange because I was getting terrible, overexposed shots. I have basically the same camera settings on my K-5 that I had on the K-3II and the pictures on the K-5 look great with good exposure. I also use lightroom and my guess is that it's something with the camera, whether it be a setting or a problem with the camera itself is hard to figure out. The rep at Ricoh said his guess is a bad actuator arm in the camera with what I was describing.

camera reset

I tried a camera reset which I would assume puts all the settings back to the defaults listed in the manual. Interesting that after the reset a few settings remained and I'm wondering if that is normal.
For example:
Color Space remained at Adobe RGB (default is sRGB)
All Lens Corrections remained off (default is two of them on and two off)
Flicker Reduction remained at 60Hz (default is 50Hz)
Date and Time remained current but those I would not necessarily expect to reset

Over exposure problem

I did some additional testing/shooting to try and determine if the problem is with the camera or lens. I contacted Ricoh and they said it could be that the actuator arm in the camera is sticking or that it could be the aperture lever or blades of the lens. It's so sporadic that it's hard to figure it out. I was going to attach a photo but the jpeg is 8.5MB which I think is too big. I sent an email to B&H to see what my options are since I am close to the 30 day return/exchange policy.

The one thing I find strange is that when I did the camera reset as Ricoh suggested it didn't put all the settings back to when I got the camera. For example the Flicker Reduction remained at 60 Hz (default being 50 Hz) and the Color Space remaining at Adobe RGB (the default being sRGB). I thought the Lens Correction default was also on, but that remained off. I'm guessing the date, language and world time may remain changed even after a reset so that didn't surprise me that those remained changed. Does anyone have information on exactly what settings are reset and which ones remain changed after doing a camera reset?

Over exposure problem

I decided to call Ricoh since I didn't get any response from my last post. He said to first try a factory reset and then try each of the lenses on the K-3II and then on my old K-5 to see if the problem crops up. He suggested that if it does on the K3II and not the K-5 that it would be a camera problem and to exchange it. I'm hoping the reset does the trick or at least I can determine that it is in fact the camera or a particular lens. This troubleshooting is difficult when there are so many factors involved.
