A couple of pics of the new 85mm f1.4

Ricoh Imaging has the new PENTAX 85mm on display at their Shinjuku showroom, which opened yesterday after being closed for two months.

The lens is larger than I expected, but feels good and balances very well on the K-1. Focus is quick enough and very silent. The motor "feels" and "sounds" (nearly silent) very different than the old SDM types. I don't know if it makes sense to say, but the AF "feels" more robust and confident than previous AF motors.

The overall fit, feel and construction is nothing short of spectacular. The output is sublime. This clearly is the definition of a premium product and is easy to see why the high cost is worth it. I think this is a lens that will cause people to give PENTAX a good look.

Here are two photos of the lens. Anyone is free to use or re-post them as desired. Enjoy!

This is not an option at the moment. It seems that Japan Post is not sending or receiving anything from overseas. International shipping with Japan is nearly shut down as of today for an unknown amount of time. I'm still trying to get more info.

Pentax 100 - Little-known information about brand history

I live near that building. It was part of the old PENTAX headquarters before the Hoya takeover. It's last use was as Pentax Imaging Systems headquarters. After the Ricoh purchase of Pentax Imaging, it was used for all of Ricoh's camera business until they decided to move the entire operation to the Ricoh head office across town several years ago. The building has since just sat there unused until it was recently sold. The building has not been demolished yet, but it won't be around long. Here is a photo of it this morning.

I did not talk with them much about future products. Too much going on tonight. I'll try to setup a meeting sometime soon and get an interview or something.

No firm timeline given and I would not trust one if they did as they never seem to meet their timelines. :-) I will just trust them at their word of it being worth the wait. They really seem super excited about it, so I have a good feeling that those of us waiting to upgrade will be rewarded.

Sorry to say I have no info on the specs. The people in the know seem very excited over it, so I imagine we will be happy with the final product.

I can confirm that the little notch in the photo is an illusion due to the angle and light. It's actually going out rather than in and under the screen (the right panel extends out). This in-develpment model does not have an articulating screen. Yes, I have seen this in up close in person. Please note that this does not mean the final version will not have it. This is still in the development stage, so anything can change at this point. What I was told is that the wait will very much be worth it.

I've uploaded some RAW files from the 11-18 and KP to my Google Drive. These are just snapshots, so don't expect works of art, but hopefully they will do as samples of what the lens can do. Feel free to download and check out. You can repost and share your edits and conclusions if you like. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1YsyzdJs89wg5z1BlcrX-In7ZOjiJdxY1?usp=sharing

I can assure you that the KP was not meant as a replacement for the K-3 at any point. I was under NDA at the time and was asked for my input as a photographer on various aspects during its development. It's just a side model made to go with the Limiteds.

It seems that Ricoh will be holding an event showcasing what what the Q series can do and how to get the most out of it on the 17th in Tokyo. It's a paid event, so a class of sorts... but still... a sign that the Q is not totally dead as Ricoh would not bother with such an event for a discontinued product.

I have not been told anything specific, but I have the strong impression in my conversations with Ricoh that they indeed are planning something special much more than just printing 100 years on products. I think 2019 will be the best one for the PENTAX brand in a while.

Your first link is to the building that was demolished and is now the apartment complex across from the map link I listed. I am unsure of the date they left, but it was across the street from what became their final HQ.

Your second link is to their showroom in Osaka.

Your third link is pretty well covered in that forum post. I remember that PENTAX corp sold off one of their major Tokyo properties in an effort to raise money to fight off the takeover, but I am unsure if this was the building or if it was the Tokiwadai (Maeno-cho) building across from the link I gave. I unsure when they sold it off.

The old Tokiwadai building can be seen here: Google Maps

I used to live a ten minute walk away from it. I used to visit fairly often. There used to be another building across the street, but it's now a massive apartment complex.

The old Pentax museum was closed by Hoya. They gave away most of the stuff inside to JCII Camera Museum

The Pentax Forum in Shinjuku is still around, but called Ricoh Square. It was recently renovated and still going strong. I was there yesterday and picked up a little something I needed.

It's not quite fully correct... HOYA bought PENTAX in a hostile takeover and merged PENTAX into HOYA Group as multiple divisions. They eventually split off part of the original company as PENTAX Imaging (cameras, sport optics and related items) and sold it to Ricoh. The newly separate PENTAX company consisted mainly of original PENTAX corp staff and engineers. After Ricoh bought PENTAX Imaging, they renamed it to Pentax Ricoh Imaging Company and continued to use the old PENTAX headquarters in Tokiwadai. Ricoh later changed the name to Ricoh Imaging Co. Ltd., moved the operations (including original PENTAX staff) out of the old PENTAX building to their Ricoh office in Omori and transferred the Ricoh camera division into the PENTAX division.

It's still mainly the original (Asahi) PENTAX staff, including members of management and engineers (with the addition of Ricoh staff), but under a new name and owner. One can argue that PENTAX is more than just a brand, and that Ricoh Imaging, which is owned by Ricoh Group, is the successor company to (Asahi Optical) PENTAX Corp.

In my opinion, a 100th anniversary is more than just a marketing gimmick all things considered. And they are indeed planning to make a big deal about it. They will have some interesting products to mark the occasion according to what I've heard from my talks with them.

It's a special version made for the Japanese police force. The seller actually bought that lens for less than half the current asking price from a different Japanese auction site (he's a reseller). At one point he tried to get 6,000USD for it, but he keeps dropping the price as nobody seems to be willing pay that much just to get it in black, especially without any accessories. For example, the lens cover in the photo is a Sigma cover. He hides it as to not show the Sigma logo. He's a nice guy, and I did try to buy it from him, but I was not at all willing to pay this price when I could get the grey one with all accessories for 1,000USD less.

300 2.8 w/teleconv vs 150-450

I love my DA 560, but the 150-450 would also be a great long lens solution that gets close enough and allows you the versatility of a zoom. The plus side to either of these is the ability to service them if needed. Parts for the old FA lenses are difficult to get if needed.

Indeed the final version of the 560m was the right way to go. The thing I love the most about it is that it's the only super-telephoto that can easily be hand-held for extended periods of time. I am also impressed how well the AF works with the PENTAX 1.4 TC. PENTAX was once known as one of the top brands in telescopes, so it's no surprise how excellent this lens is. The only complaint I have at all is the minimum focus distance, but it's not a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, I am a bit slow to reply. Hitrate, thank you for your input. I'm sorry to say I'm no longer with McClatchy as they have closed all their foreign operations. I still keep in contact with them, but their main focus is on US politics these days.

Angerdan, my information is pretty reliable as I get it directly from people at Ricoh. I only comment on facts. I make no guesses. I've been under NDA with them before, so I can't always talk about what I know, but I try to share what I can when I can.

I can give you one new fun fact though... the KP was under development for over three years before its release. They had three final designs for the body. One was very close to what you see as the final KP, the other two were quite a bit different though similar to each-other (I'm not sure I can give more details). The Japanese employees preferred the look of one while the foreign staff preferred the other. Finally, some from the foreign staff came around to the design the Japanese preferred and that was chosen as the style that became the released model. Another interesting fact is that the pointy hump, which was not part of the original design for the KP, was added to the design after the release of the K-1 mainly just to have the style match.

I don't see the people at Ricoh/PENTAX as often as I used to since they moved the PENTAX operation to the Ricoh head office about an hour or so away from me. The old PENTAX office is actually ten minutes away from my home. I used to be able to walk there. I miss that location. But still, I do keep a good relationship with them and meet when I can.

As for not seeing the need for KAF4 now, they are looking into what they will need tomorrow. True that their AF is behind some other brands, but they are working on that. When they do have something special come out, then it would be good to have the lenses that can keep up ready in the market.

What I meant about my relaunch comment is that Ricoh will not relaunch old/discontinued products even if there is no successor yet. They may look at their old designs for ideas, but they will not just place new coatings on a long-discontinued lens and call it an upgrade. They are working on new designs that are of much higher resolution with a goal of making their lenses ready not only for the next generation of sensors, but also what comes after that.

Now for my personal opinion... I think that Ricoh is increasing their efforts to make the camera division grow. They have more exciting products in the pipeline than they've had in a while. They are finally concentrating on the high-end over just releasing endless 18-whatever kit lenses. They may be a bit slow, but they really care about their products. The people behind the cameras are not just number-crunchers, but actual photographers and enthusiasts who take great pride in their work. They believe in quality even if it means a frustratingly long delays.

The folks at Ricoh/Pentax know the limitations for speed, which is why they are moving to KAF4 for all their high-spec lenses going forward. They cannot achieve a very high FPS with a mechanical aperture. The KAF3 and older designs are limiting the speed of what they want to do in the future. This is another reason they will not relaunch old lenses.

Their current strategy is star lenses will be about absolute maximum corner to corner resolution going forward. They will be KAF4 and higher-spec motors for speed for the most part. The Limited series will be about rendering and 3-D look, along with resolution. The FA Limiteds will be updated, though exactly when is not given. All other series such as regular DA and DFA can be a mix of whatever they feel is best for that current design and target market, which can still offer KAF3 or older tech.

As for the 560 prototype shown in older posts above... yes, it was a collapsible design at first, but was changed to its current form in order to improve image quality. There were also potential production problems with the collapsible version. Ultimately, the final version is better built, more reliable and better IQ than the prototype.

What you can take away form this is that the people at Ricoh/Pentax do not like to release anything that they consider a compromise on quality. While they may not have the most cutting edge tech in all areas, they do make some of the best optics and most reliable gear out there due to their not releasing something until they feel it is ready rather than rush to market.

That's quite an example you made! :-) Still though, I do not claim the the lens to be indestructible, I only show that a modern lens coating can take more abuse than expected. While a lens protector is reassuring to many people (myself included at times), I'm only saying that I don't lose any sleep over some of my lenses not having them.

For example, I do use protective filters on my zooms, but don't bother with my primes. I can get into dirty situations with the zoom, so it's easier to just take off the filter and clean it directly. As for my primes... while usually not a problem, there have been times when there have been undesirable effects due to the filter, so I do not use them on primes since I only use primes when I want the very best image quality I can get.

Just for the sake for clarity... I am not expressing my view as the best way. I only do what works for me. If someone does or does not like filters, well... that's really a personal decision that I don't comment on. All that matters is that one is happy with their decision and enjoys their hobby or work. Also, this is not directed at anyone. I'm just sharing my thoughts. :-)
