Single in April 2019 - a summary:

I had a ball using the HD Pentax-DA* 50mm F1.4, wide-open for most of the month.

And it wasn't hard, the lens is superbly sharp at nearly all apertures.
Bokeh is pretty nice at most apertures as well.
With the K-1 it pretty much nailed the focus every time.
Micro-contrast is good, colour is neutral, and very little post-processing was required.

Sandy asked for a comparison with the Tokina Opera FF 50mm f1.4 but there was no need, the lenses are identical.

I hope the new Pentax FF DSLR will use the new Sony 60MP sensor - IMX455 or IMX 555(like the forthcoming Nikon DSLR) , these lenses will really shine.

You won't be disappointed with the KP.
It's tiny.
It makes both the K3 and K5 look primitive!

I might stay onboard and enjoy the return trip.

Here's a sample taken with my March lens, Vivitar 28mm 1:2.0 MC Close Focus Wide Angle (Komine) - It's a manual focus A lens from the 70's

Here's a quoted review:
"Ok, so what's the verdict?

This is really an outstanding lens. The close focus is remarkably useful and, combining that with f/2 and a decent OOF PSF, this lens can produce bokeh that are way better than most 28mm lenses can deliver.
Where things are in focus, they're sharp -- even wide open. Stopping down even a little improves the already-modest vignetting, and immediately improves both contrast and colors.
Colors aren't bad even wide open, but they get a little more accurate and slightly colder when stopped down. Distortion is minimal, and I really don't see any flare problems either."

I don't know what Adam has done, but since changing servers, PentaxForums is very sluggish "down-under". Lots of lag, slow to load pages etc.
I'm not usually a big commenter on shots, but it is now quite Painful to view everyone's shots, let alone post comments.

That is one pretty hunk of brass and glass!

Once again I will try to finish a month.

I'm really sorry, I want to, but I just can't participate for a while.
I might be able to post a few shots, but am unable to commit to an everyday shot.

Have fun everyone, I will be watching when I can.

After a disappointing month with my Tokina 17mm (mainly due to weather, family issues and extreme work pressure (== laziness)), I will try to do a full month in August. K-1 needs more exercise. My Sigma lenses are all fixed now (24-70/2.8, 35/1.4, 85/1.4 and the Bigma), I think I will go with the 24-70/2.8, and maybe if someone else is using the new Pentax 24-70, we can do some comparisons. I'm open to requests though, but please, we are lacking good light, the Bigma would be better suited to Spring, Summer or Autumn....

Received my modded Sigma 35 and Sigma 85 lenses from CRK today. Going to drop off the 24-70 and the Bigma next!
If it's OK with members, I will complete the month with the Sigma 35 on my K-1 body?

The original Sigma bases had a small bevel, they weren't square. Looking at the above photo, the bevel is much more pronounced after modification. :)

Yep, thanks, and I couldn't agree more.

I dug out an old Pentax FA 28-105 (the rebranded Tamron made one), and the IQ is just super.
Ditto for Pentax F35-70, and Tokina AT-X Pro 20-35mm f2.8.

I'm going to try. It'll probably be a K-series lens (I have a few still!), or maybe 2016 IS the year of the DA15 Limited....
It's very hot in little old Adelaide, with no relief in sight... but I need a challenge again!

Count me in again.
I have a Cosina 55/1.2 to use. I'd like to be like Mike :)
Close enough to 50?
If not, I will reprise my Tokina AT-X Pro 20-35/2.8

Pentax FA43 Limited: The Conclusion.

It's a day early, I can't shoot tomorrow for a couple of very good reasons.
If I was going to shoot, it wouldn't be with this lens, and I will explain as I move along.

Firstly, it's an attractive, pancake-like lens, solid metal, it looks a million dollars, but it really doesn't have a 'raison d'etre'.
In an FF world, it would be narrower than a 35mm wide-angle, and not quite the standard 50mm. And at f1.9, it's just not fast enough.
In an APS-C world, it's neither a standard prime or a portrait prime, it's just lost, in limbo, it just doesn't make sense.

Secondly, optically, it just isn't THAT good. Sure, the centre is fairly good (but others easily better it (ie the ultra-cheap M50/1.7), the borders and corners just plain suck. Double Yuk.

Thirdly, in this modern age, it's noisy like a Pentax meat grinder. There are at least 4 or 5, (maybe more) SDM, or HSM lenses that outperform it, and are much quieter, and sharper from edge to edge.

Finally, It is possible to get some good shots from this lens, but you need to shoot RAW, and you need to be very proficient in post-processing.

I would score it 2 out of 5 stars.
And I no longer feel the need to keep it.

I'm sorry to be this brutal, but every instinct I have ever had about this lens has been proven true during my month with this lens.
I would rather shoot with the Takumar 50/1.4 or K50/1.4, or even the Takumar 55/1.8. And I already know my shots would be better, such is the legacy of the SIngle in... challenges.

I'm going to miss all of this so very much!

I don't think I can finish January. I will shoot with as many MF lenses as I can, maybe some film shots if applicable?

All of my Pentax gear will eventually be for sale, Susan and my kids will look after this.

God bless you all, and best wishes for the future.

John.

Sandy, I will send you a pvt message soon.

Commiserations...

I listened to a blow by blow description on mlb.com during my lunch break today. I really thought they were going to do it in the 9th innings. They did you proud.

"At the end of the day
Some you win, some you don’t
So I’m glad that I’m here
With some friends that I know
Always there with a smile
Saying you’re not alone
Singing la la la la
Que sera"

To Sandy and Rod:

I can see months of enjoyment ahead with your new lenses!

To Simon:

I will be using the my Takumar 50/1.4 in November, and I may do a comparison with my Tomioka 55/1.4, it will be a battle of 8 aperture blades versus 6.....

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Today I got a request to use one of my photos in an upcoming Virgin Australia Airlines onboard magazine (December) "Voyeur Magazine", it will be interesting to see if anything comes of this...

I'm all right, Jack!
