Decent Fast-ish Manual Wide

Hi all,

So I'm in the market for a fast-ish wide angle lens. I'll be putting it on a MX to shoot b&w. So color rendition isn't a huge problem, would like sharpness throughout though. Main uses will be indoors, to use without flash and try to minimize camera shake, and architectural stuff. Mostly at sunset/night so will be on a tripod then. The widest i have now is a Quantaray 28-90mm 3.5-5.6 and besides it's obvious IQ deficiency using it on a manual body is less than an enjoyable experience.

Pentax is always nice, but a soviet lens or some weird off-brand is always fun. Oh and fixed focal length of course. :D

Thanks for saving me searching through endless posts that match "lens":o

Vivitar Aperture Issue

So I acquired a Vivitar 35-105mm 3.2-4 MACRO when I bought my ZX-7. The aperture ring on this lens does not "click" it a free flow ring (only lens i have like this) On it's own the aperture will stay wherever i move it to. Attach it to a body however and it has a mind of it's own. You can still adjust it with no resistance, but let go and the ring will slide back towards f16. It normally stops around f11 though. Assuming it has to do with the aperture linkage in the body.

This is not a fabulous lens I have to use(quite the opposite) but just found it strange and was looking for some info for future reference.

Thanks,

T

MX Flash Suggestions

So I recently acquired a Pentax MX. I own a Pentax AF200t flash which works fine, but i'm tired of those "flash" shots. I'm looking for a flash that will bounce so I have some more options with composition. I bought a Promaster 5000m but the shoe broke twice, once still usable now just busted, so i think i'll stick with good 'ol pentax or something else of similar quality.

Also would an external light meter be a good idea since it's all manual?

Any suggestions are welcome,

T

(original shot on a perfect ME Super, but sold it :( Anyway i'll check out those wlachan posts for a rainy day.

ZX-7 Film Advance Troubles

Hey all,

So i've been shooting on a ZX-7 for a while now and have just run into my first snag. The last 2-3 rolls I have put through have had incorrect spacing between frames. By that I mean sometimes separate frames will overlap one another. This isn't a double exposure setting problem cause i haven't used it. Only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the previous frame will cover the next?

Does this have to do with the built in winder? Perhaps just loosely loaded film?

I've got a roll in the camera now so don't want to open it, but its really starting to annoy me?

DIY is best but i'll consider having it repaired. Then again i've been itching to buy a manual pentax anyway.

All replies welcome, thanks for any help!!

New Auto 110

Yeah I would definitely like to try reloading my own cartridges with cut 35mm film. I really want to get some Kodak Professional B&W 400 in there. I think the correct ISO with the fine grain of the kodak would give some really good results. I've never worked with Ektar before. Do you have some images online, or a place to shop for them?

I'm still in the process of using up my first roll. I love how I can just stick the 110 in my pocket and have a film SLR at all times. That was the biggest problem with my 35mm was that I just didn't carry with me.

I only have the 24mm lens (with no cap ARG!!) and also the AF100 flash. got it for $35 on eBay so not to bad. I think i'm going to get the 50mm, or perhaps the 70mm. What lens do you guys find yourself using most?

Would love to get the Pan Focus LEns though. Some cool results could be had.

Thanks for all the replays,

keep em coming!!

$12 for 3 rolls. Ridiculous but the only site I found. Haven't gotten the camera or film yer but know I'll almost
certainly have to send it out for processing. Any thing around buffalo NY?

Cold Weather Shooting

So i was out by the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, NY a few days ago getting some sunset/night shots. Had both my K200 and ZX-7 (film) Got about 30-40 shots with the K200 then kept saying the battery was dead. The ZX-7 with 2 CR2 batteries shot the other 2 hours I was there no problems. They batteries in the K200 weren't fresh and i'm almost positive they were recharables. I'm assuming it was just the cold (around freezing with wind chill) so onto my actual question.

So anyway my question is does anyone have some tricks for keeping a K200 alive in the cold. Lithium's? Eneloops? A casing, or just maybe keeping batteries in your pocket to keep them warm?

Thanks in advance ~T:D

White on Red is by far my favorite. The clean lines and lightness of the white flower contrast perfectly with the blurred red background. Gives great texture to the shot!

Help deciding best effect...

Just - that was the biggest problem with #1 was the color rendition. In order to get that exposure for the H2o the sun area was completley blown out. Abeight i didn't do to much PP, but i try not to.

Ill post a pick of my possible shooting position without a boat for reference.

Perhaps the 2x teleconverter should have been in my pocket, and not in the truck.

Thanks for the input guys, ill be sure to get more up soon!!!

Thoughts on prosumer compact...

Do you guy, other than ray, also own a DSLR? My real question is whether or not a compact would be worth the convenience vs. my DSLR. At first i didn't think carrying a bag with 3-4 lenses, and flashes, plus whatever was a big deal. however i find myself fiddling with my gear more than taking photos. I have been trying to just take my K200 and lens to calm it down(even shot some rolls of film), but now I think I may just want to have a smaller camera on me all the time.

Sorry for the rant, just looking for some guidance on IQ vs. convenience.

Hello all,

So I have been debating the issue of getting a "pro"sumer compact, to compliment, or possibly replace, my DSLR. I understand that the feature set and performance WILL NOT be up to par with an SLR, but I find myself either carrying to much equipment around, or simply not bringing it and regretting it.

ANybody done this and been dissapointed/satisfied/ whatever/

Also if I do go compact, I figure ill get tthe Sigma DP1. Anyone ever use one?

Thanks for any help,

K200 battery issues

Ok. The alkalines in the camera are acting very strange. They will take a couple shots and then the camera will say there dead. Turn it off and on again and you can get a couple more shots. Anyway I'm going to go buy a set of lithiums just to see if it's the batteries or the camera. Hopefully it's just batteries as I've got no $$$ for a new camera. Anyway thanks for your help and hopefully some new batts will do the trick.

K200 battery issues

hello all,

So i own a K200d, and have for about a year now. It's been quite fun having all the flexibility of digital, but now something has gone a rye. The batteries in the K200 seem to die really fast. I have been using rechargable NiMh batts, but just stuck a pair of alkalines in there to see what happened.

ANything like this happen to anyone else? Would cleaning contacts, aka DIY maintenance fix this?

Thanks in advance

Yeah just did a quick and dirty test with the 50mm. First is with DIA UV filter, and second without. I have only more faith in the SMC coating now.

Still worry when i don't have that filter on though...

Yeah I figured a hood wood do squat because the lamp was in the frame. I did have a UV filter on though so I'll do some tests later when I get home from work.

Hello all,

So I noticed this the other day when I was snapping with the M50 f/1.7 on. I assume this has to do with reflections in the lens , but perhaps not. Has anyone seen this reverse, inverted image before?

please tell me I can fix it with a hood or something:o

Thanks for all replys

Poll: Film and/or Digital..?

Chalion -just say that paying per shot is motivation to think more about your photography!! :)

Anyway I decided now that I'm heading home from vacation, I'm going to shoot only film for a while. In a week or 3 I'll see if the patience of film, or the immediacey of digital is better for me.

Don't remeber who posted this. But said they used to shoot with film nikons. I have a friend looking to unload some stuff. N75 and N90s specifically. Any thoughts on these 2 or should my ZX-7 do as well?

Well as I have been researching film, I am remembering why I invested in digital in the first place. As for color correction(white balance), shake reduction, single set ISO, etc. etc. The convienience factor is definatley there.

Do you find the convenience worth it overall? For those who shoot both, is serious shooting film SLR, and digital snapshots on a P&S, or some other mix?

However, I don't want to pass judgement to quickly. I have put a couple rolls through my newold ZX-7 and have yet to get prints. I'm on vacation and am waiting to get home to develop.

I like the way I care about my film shots. It's makes me slow down, and really consider framing, exposure, and other important details. We shall see if it slowed me down enough to improve my photography (though i wouldn't expect leaps and bounds from 3 rolls of vacation shots)

on a side note I took a day trip to kennedy Space Center 2 days ago. Seems like everyone there had at least 1 camera. Obviously there were ubiqitous P&S, plus CaNikon SLRs, but I saw 2 film shooters (1 pentax!!), and another guy with a K200d.

Anyway, if I do stick with film, is my ZX-7 body enough to experiment with, or should I look for a PZ-1 or MX?

Also does anyone develop themselves, or just let the camera store worry about it?

Thanks for all your input so far.
