Would love to upgrade to the K1 but...

The KP is well above K-3 in noise performance because of in camera post processing. You can get more or less the same with K-3 and in computer post processing.

I believe the autofocus performance is the main problem here, not noise. The Tamron is quite slow to focus. A much faster alternative would be the Pentax DA 55-300 PLM, but that has 1-2 stops smaller aperture, so its not perfect for low lighting sports. I think the Sigma 70-200 HSM is a good compromise. f/2,8, and fast AF, although not as fast as the PLM. The Pentax D-FA 70-200 is even better but its very expensive.

My advice is selling the Tamron and buy a Sigma. Then push the ISO a bit more and post process the noise better.

M 50mm f/1,7
A 50mm f/1,7
F 50mm f/1,7
FA 50mm f/1,7
DA 50mm f/1,8

All of these are great, and AFAIK uses the same optical formula (except for a slight change of the aperture diaphragm in the DA), but there are improvements on functionality (aperture coupling and AF), coatings and changes to the exterior and mount.

I have the DA and a M 50mm f/1,4 which is said to be as sharp as the f/1,7 variety, but I always choose the DA before the M on my digital cameras. I think the 1000 NOK I paid for a new DA, was a bargain.

K1 II Dynamic Pixel Shift as stabilizer ?

Handheld shooting 4 shots at full burst with 1/8s ISO400 stacked will have as little camera motion blur as a single shot at 1/8s ISO100 because the image is shifted to compensate motion blur between each shot, but the photon noise will be as low as a single shot at 1/2s ISO100. This is the best of two worlds. Lower noise combined with lower motion blur.

But as far as I know, the result will be equally good by stacking in camera (DPS) as stacking them in a post processing program. The camera software and the computer software essentially does the same thing. In other words, you would get similar result with a K-1 and post processing software as a K-1 II does in camera. This is one of the reasons I think the K-1->K-1II upgrade are not worth it.

Do you have access to both a K-1 and a K-1 mark II? If so, can you try to compare side by side, ISO 100 - 1 million? Same settings, same scene and raw of course.

How long is a rope? There is no clear answare to your question. Personally I leave the higher part of the ISO scale unused, but I don't have a clear limit. Sometimes I push the ISO more then other times. Regardless of PS or not.

However be aware that PS are stitching and averaging 4 images, resulting in lower noise. In terms of shot noise the 4 shots of PS at ISO 12800 equals using a singe exposure of ISO 3200 since the sum exposure time will be equal.

Thanks. I would not pay 79€ for this anyway. But if it was a lot cheaper and somewhat interesting, I just might try it. I don'd find it interesting. If anyone else do, the ad can be found in Norwegian here.

I just came across someone selling a lens like this together with some other Pentax K mount lenses. What is it used for? What effects does it give aside from widening the view from the lens its screwed onto?

Is it just a combined focal reducer with an IR filter?

Non-Standard Crop Size in Post?

For screen viewing I may use frames to cover up the parts of the screen I dont want to be visible. For instance with a square crop shown on a 16:9 screen.

For prints, you just print the next size up and crop manually (siccors/knife) and make a custom frame. If you dont print them yourself you probably get better prices when you choose a size that can be printed with as little canvas as possoble. For example, if they have a 1 meter roll and you want a 1,05 meter print, they will have to print it at the length of the roll in stead of the width. Choose 1,0 m and you will save some canvas. Or print several prints at once so you make use of the full width of the roll.

I know. Just 1,27x the diagonal of 36x24 sensors. If you project light through a lens and onto a piece of paper you will get a feeling of how large the image circle really are. On most lenses its just 1 or 2 settings where the circle narrows in at close to 43,3mm diameter. Some lenses have the double of that at certain settings. I think 55mm will be practically available in many real situations.

Sensor costs are slowly and steadily decreasing. Sometime in the future I hope I can get a 44x33mm sensor in a K mount camera for just slightly more then a 36x24mm variety. Most K mount lenses can deliver more then Ø43mm image circle in most of the settings. Only occationally I would need to crop all the way down to 36x24mm or less to get decent corner performance.

Compression don't necessarily mean loss of image quality. Pentax and most other brands use lossless compression for raw files.

There is also another modern option: Mitakon 135mm f/1,4. This lens is made in small series and was available with K mount earlier. Its quite a heavy beast and it cost 3000 $. You could wait for it to become available in K mount again, contact Mitacon and ask them to make one with K mount despite its not listed, or look for a used one.

Or you could go a little shorter on focal length and get a Venus Laowa 105mm f/2,0 Smooth Transition Focus for 700 $. This should be close to portaiture bokeh heaven.

What exactly is a noise cancelling chip? If the noise is digitalized (on sensor), it would be a conditional smearing chip that does nothing more then can be done in post processing.

With the launch of K-1 II, the owners of the original K-1 got an upgrade offer. The offer was to send in the camera and upgrade the circuit board (and logo) to K-1 II. The price in USA was set to 550 US$ and in Canada to 690 CAD. The upgrade service would be avalable from 21. may to 30. september 2018. Are you going to upgrade your original K-1?

The upgrade service will probably be available world wide. DPR just had prices for north america because their primary Ricoh-Pentax contact was the north american contact.

The poll runs out 30. september 2018

That was a surprise. I just need to read more about the differences and consider if its worth 550$. The original K-1 will still be a fantastic camera without the upgrade option.

I dont know about all those lenses, but here is a short list of lensed I do know and do recommend, according to the criteria:

- Pentax M 50mm f/1,4 and f/1,7 versions
- Helios 44 58mm f/2,0 (not sure wich variety)
- Zenitar 16mm f/2,8 (I got mine at a bargain price below 100$, but it usually cost more)
- Chinon 135mm f/2,8
- Pentax DA 50mm f/1,8 (campain prices usually just below 100$)

All of these are full frame lenses.

If the K-1 had been a Tesla the K-1 II features would likely be a software update. I don't like that doftware updates are held back to make the "new" camera look new. I think Pentax would sell more cameras if they where more generous with the updates for a long time after the replacement was ready. It would be a very positive way to differentiate Pentax from the rest. Just like Tesla does in the automotive industry.

Pentax K-1 Mark II DSLR camera detailed specifications leaked

I think the dynamic range are good enough at ISO 100, all we need is an in camera or in sensor ND-filter that takes away the hassle of glass filters and optical faults that introduces. I would love to have a camera with built in ND that takes ISO 100 down to ISO 25 or 12 with a touch.

Let me add, at a sensor level, reducing ISO below 100 is hard to do. That means compromises. Higher saturation (per pixel) can mainly be acrhieved by increasing pixel size. Per area the saturation stays about the same. This is basicly the capisitance holding the electrons captured by the photodiode. Replacing 1 large pixel with 4 small will have the same combined saturation (#e-). The large one will have longer electron transport and thus be slower to read out. The large will have a larger chief ray angle, wich is good for large aperture lenses. The small pixels will have higher noise, also when binned, assuming a monochrome sensor. With RGGB sensors it will be more complicated.

Although the K-1 II probably will perform much like K-1, I think future sensors may get around the low ISO limitation by using global shutter and take two or more exposures almost without delay. Two expossure durations will be combined into one file with very high dynamic range. The range will be extended mainly in the high saturation end. Lenses have to be specifically designed to take advantage of the higher DR.
