Being in the middle of setting up a good quality filing system for my negs, I can now see why Colton only takes 35 frames per roll. 7x5 fits perfectly in one sheet. 9x4 ends up with one sheet only partially used (I don't want to mix films in a sheet) and 6x6 are just slightly too long to be sure the end negs don't get damaged. The cost of high quality transparent neg sheets and folders in slip cases outweighs the gains of one or two extra frames.

I don't freak out because I am used to it, I just roll my eyes and take the lens cap off. ME Super... LX... When the ME Super was my only camera I used to use it on manual 98% of the time, so it was never a problem. Now I use auto more often (as I am usually using more forgiving film stocks) I sometimes get caught out. On the other hand, whenever I use my Super Program I get all worried that the shutter speed is on 1/1000 indoors with 100ASA film... Go figure.

As always, personal preference, what you photograph and lots of other things come into play. I have deliberately stuck to getting only Pentax SLRs (with one slip which was a gift) but I did use an F3 on an excavation alongside my Pentax many moons ago. Both the F3 and the LX are extremely capable cameras. Despite the online chat, I have found my LX utterly reliable over the last 15 years. It is a good size for me (small hands) and I have never used AE Lock on any camera, film or digital, in 40 years. That is merely a quirk of how I learnt photography, i.e., on a camera without AE Lock... I just use the exposure compensation dial or manual. So much so that I find it really annoying when I accidentally touch the AE Lock button on my K-3 and wonder why the exposure is doing something odd!

I found the F3 in comparison a heavily built tank. If I was a press photographer working somewhere dodgy where I needed my camera to occasionally beat off muggers, I'd buy an F3. But I'm not. I want something I can carry on hikes in my backpack with too many lenses. That is not to say the F3 isn't a really good camera, it is just not the really good camera for me.

Fun story. When I was in college I was ask to cover a demo at the Debating Society. When I turned-up a second chap was also covering the event. I had my Pentax ME Super with a Boots flashgun (Boots is a chain of drug stores that used to sell lots of cheap photo related gear). He had a F3 with the attachment to put the flash over the ?rewind crank and a flash which was like the second coming every time it went off. When I took my prints to the paper they were really happy. The chap with the F3 had failed to load his film onto the developing spool correctly and hadn't got a single image. Yes, I was feeling smug (even 36 years later!).

With film cameras now being a niche interest, find what you enjoy using and use them. If you don't like using it, sell it on. Surely the main motive for most of us who have film photography as a hobby is to have fun?

I shot a roll of Rollei Infrared film using a 720nm filter and metering for ISO 6, taking two shots, one as metered and one over. I haven't got the negs back yet to check, but it looks like the ISO 6 was plenty, if not slightly too much. Here is one photo from the roll taken using my MX and a SMC Pentax "K" 24mm f/2.8 lens. I wish there was some way to attach a filter to the shift lens...

You could open the back and lock the shutter open with a cable release. Slowly screw in the lens checking that it doesn't touch the mirror looking through the back of the camera.

My guess is that it'll be fine as the lens was incompatible with cameras older than the Spottie, but is fine with M42 cameras later than it. I suspect that would carry over to the K-mount bodies.

If you are using the shift on digital, leave it set to Av mode and just shut the aperture down when you have focused and shifted. If you are using it on film, best to be a little generous with the exposure when shifted a great deal. Have fun!

Pentax Es-II auto shutter issue

I'd try all the usual things like cleaning the battery compartments and trying fresh (preferably silver oxide) batteries. It is also worth rotating the exposure compensation dial back and forth quite a few times as some models have problems with oxidation of the contacts (more common with later M-series models but worth a try).

Sadly, if the electronics are dying, it is unlikely to be repairable. Fifty year old electronic components are essentially impossible to source. Some of the repair techs may have a few left in stock, but it'll be a long-shot.

I hope you get it fixed. It's a lovely camera.

ES-II Batteries and my Idea for a Battery Base

There is some pretty mixed (and sometimes incorrect) info in this thread. The ESII used ordinary button cells like the later K/M/A series cameras. Silver lasts longer than alkali. No need for zinc air batteries etc. Unlike the F, the meter only comes on when you half-press the shutter. I found that the shutter was easy to knock, however, so get in the habit of using the shutter lock. The biggest problem is the very fiddly battery compartment cover rather reminiscent of the one used sometime later for the ME-F.

As I try and rotate round my various film bodies, I have normally moved the batteries on to the next camera before they have run out (if they were fresh when I fitted them).

I'm very fond of my ES/ESII combo and they don't see enough love. As I have a black ES and a "silver" ESII, I usually run them as a pair with BW film in the former and colour in the latter.

Cheers, Kris.

I have two dead LX nicad battery packs. Just need to find someone willing to rebuild them! (I'm utterly cack-handed with a soldering iron so won't touch it myself, it would be a disaster.)

These are lovely. How did you meter when using the filter? I read suggestions of metering at either 12 or 6 ISO.
