Ok here is the photo in question with no rotation

https://static.uglyhedgehog.com/upload/2019/4/8/403834-img0334_4.jpg

It isn't clear where the horizon is, trees are not necessarily vertical, there is a fence maybe the posts are vertical...
To be fair my intention was to see if the exif data for the rotation was useful or not. I'm fully aware I can make artistic choices or not choose at all. For architecture this probably is a bigger issue as we have expectations of how buildings should look. If you have the measurement, you shouldn't need to guess.

I guess i could say I weigh 12 stone, I have some scales in the bathroom that disagree :)

To be honest I thought it was fine but someone questioned if it was level and it's hard to say the exif says it isn't. Although Issac Newton was from my home town I don't think i'm up to arguing with gravity, life is too short.

Incidentally https://www.facebook.com/ricohimagingfrance/ say hi to them there, they are a little shy and don't seem to understand the social part of social media. I did invite them to join the forum.

It's a lake with trees and the the land to the right is higher as you walk down the hill towards the lake. Surprisingly it seems closer to level applying - 2 degrees rather than + 2 degrees. It's not an easy fix :) I'll ask Pentax FR if they think +2 or -2 according to the exif :)

K1 flat video to rec 709 how to get there.

Ok I am totally inexperienced in this so do not expect expertise in this post.

Shooting log or flat footage enables more dynamic range of a scene to be captured and a LUT can be applied to convert to a standard rec709 profile and hopefully beautiful footage.

Thats not so hard if you have raw footage to begin with, but we certainly don't with Pentax Video Even with Raw with a high dynamic range scene Lightroom or adobe camera raw applies a curve before you get to adjust the raw file. This can be seen that you can reduce exposure and get good highlight detail and increase exposure and get good shadow detail but you can't get both since adobes curve is already in play. whats needed is a camera profile - that curve to allow you to recover the shadow and highlight detail. 3D lut creator can actually make this camera profile in recent versions but its not exactly cheap and the demo version will not let you save such a profile.

With Video we pretty much hit the same issues as with processing raw v jpeg. The jpeg file has curves applied before you start and adding another curve results in distortion.

Unfortunately we don't get raw video footage from the k1 which makes color grading hard to do well, however Pentax did throw us a bone they included a flat profile. This should be enough that we can grade this footage.

I do some video with the iPhone and filmic pro this enables a flat profile and log profile on the iPhone and they provide 2 luts to convert to rec709.
with the k1 we can get a flat footage but I am unaware of an existing LUT to convert that to rec709.

I think there may be a way to film color targets (xrite color checker) and create a LUT to convert the flat footage.

This page may help

How to Create Your Own Custom LUTs in Under 5 minutes ? Matchstix Studios

If we can create a suitable custom lut it should be useful for anyone shooting with the flat profile in the K1.

Anyone interested? I apologise for the confused nature of this post, it reflects my level of understanding.

Thanks john,

it seems like its a problem with film era Pentax Zoom Lenses having a rotating front element, which is a pity.

there is the tamron 28-200 which seems to be soft with cr and purple fringing, will find out next week, when it arrives

I couldn't find it , there are lens which say internal focusing, but not specifically if the filter ring rotates. I'm playing around with an anamorphic lens so orientation matters as well as cpl and gnd filters. The results with the anamorphic have been surprising. For 50mm it pretty much works wider is useless, lot of light loss (1/160th f2.8 iso 1600 in daylight!

Hi all,
I'm looking for lenses that don't rotate the front element to focus.

Most primes do not rotate, pk and pka lenses mostly don't , most af zooms do :(

Good in terms of the front element not rotating for focus:

Pentax F 1.7 50mm doesnt

bad front element rotates:

PentaxF 70-210 does
Sigma 70-300 does

I'm not looking for IQ that can be searched for i just want to find which lenses do not rotate the front element and preferably auto focus

The strange bokeh and odd flare , even the distortion are all part of what makes anamorphic lenses special. They really are a story telling lens.
Some of the best stories you have seen were filmed using an anamorphic lens

You Tube

:)

I just tried movie mode on the K1 you can set an aps-c crop for video recording, so recording isn't forced to be over the full frame.

Yes I have an app filmic pro (and filmic remote) it handles the desqueeze on the iphone.
I've been lusting after an anamorphic lens for a long time.

For full size cameras the price is just ,, too high. I love the cinematic look and probably will only get it on the iphone.

I just got a Zhiyon Smooth 4 today :)

This is going to be fun.

It may not work on the K1 at all, i was surprised that the GH5 works as its a much bigger sensor than the iphone.

There is actually 2 versions of the 37mm mount moondog lens one is the 5141 (gen1) and the other is the 5241 (gen 2) They increased the aperture size on the gen2. I've just corrected my order to the gen2. The video in the thread was shot with the gen 1 lens.

I think with my Panasonic it uses a narrower field of view when shooting video. I don't know if the k1 or k5 do similar or if the vignette will be too much. I should have it in a week or 2 and see if it will be any use on larger sensors.

Kind of a shame the 2 pentax cameras don't do 4k video as i'd have more to crop.

Anyway it's coming now so , we will see. Birders often crop heavily so hopefully there will be something usable :) ... I've hacked enlarger lenses on to pentax bodys and they worked quite well.

I will report back whatever the outcome. is it possible to shoot video in crop mode on the k1?

Will see, soon enough It is ordered and heading from New York to Ireland. I'm hoping I get the orientation right :)
The thing that gives me some hope is the gh5 managed it and i know the 50mm lens on the k1 is quite happy looking through a 30.5mm hole

hi all,

I'm thinking about buying moondog labs 1.33x anamorphic lens with the 37mm lens mount. For the iPhone, or I can get a dedicated clip version for my particular iphone.

now i use some stepdown rings to 37mm on some of my full frame lenses already usually with a 37 - 30.5 on top (lets me use a film canister top as a lens cap. :) it works pretty well on 50mm + and my 70- 210mm.

Then I saw this

You Tube

This is on a panasonic gh5 and I kinda have a panasonic G5 and also a Pentax K5 .

So that got me wondering how much of the K1, K5 image circle is used?

I do have a few other odd bits like the panagor macro adapter an m42 helical mount various tubes...

So maybe i could use this lens with the k1, k5, or G5 maybe?

I want the lens for my iphone 7 plus anyway but its a choice between the 37mm version or a dedicated clip version for the phone. The 37mm version may need a shim to stop it tilting on the phone. Both models are the same price...

Has anyone tried this? Or will I be the first?

I guess for stills i can crop away but i do fancy trying some anamorphic video footage with my other cameras :)

So am I crazy?

Hi the screen on the andycine is 1920 by 1080p and is 386 PPI it can take a 4k signal (a retina display is 326 PPI in comparison).

A 4k display would be 2x 386 PPI at that screen size. But surprisingly yes you can get a display with that resolution around that size
Here comes world's first 6" 4K AMOLED display with an unprecedented density of 734 PPI Although I don't know if there is a field monitor at that resolution, certainly not at that price.

Alternatives:

if you can use a wireless display then maybe a phone or tablet is an option

Highest ppi phones 2018, highest pixel density phone screens 2018, how to calculate PPi Pixel Density of Phone Screen, Best Pixel Density phones 2018 Sony XZ premium and Samsung Galaxy S8

GMonitor ? Apps bei Google Play
?GMonitor on the App*Store

These apps are designed for lumix cameras with Wifi but the resolution sent by wifi is only 640x480.

Interesting though maybe at some point there will be a pentax app such as for the K1. I think its going to lag quite badly over wifi to be fair.

There are other field monitors with options such as recording hdmi out as well as in and i think, sdi input which gives a less laggy input than with hdmi

Somehow I don't see Pentax producing a camera with the capability to use these features in the near future.
They do have a version of the gopro.
Specifications?WG-M2 | RICOH IMAGING

gets quite a bashing here

About the M42 lenses i use a plumbing gasket designed for a sink waste pipe which helps as a light seal, alternatively there are lipped m42 adapters now you don't get infinity focus with these but for portrait work where you want the background blurred this isn't a problem. It's also far easier to change lenses.

I've found an old cobra650 dedicated flash works well it has its own light sensor and is pretty close on getting the exposure right.

I just picked up an andycine 4k monitor and it works with the k5 pretty well it has built in focus peaking zoom 4x 9x 16x, zebra striping, false color and more.

I've just checked it reads the hdmi while recording video. retail price is around /$180 i got mine for 80 euro. i also picked up recently a q-666 tripod a tourism tripod at a very light weight 3 pounds including ball head. I am dubious how good it is for eye level photography with its 2 stage centre column extended. But it seems solid enough and there is no slop in the centre column when its down.

i haven't tried it with my slider yet but i have the option to unscrew the ball head and attach that to the legs and maybe the ball head to the slider. its arca swiss and can convert to a monopod with 1 leg and the reversible centre column. The bottom of the centre column has a spring loaded hook which is removed for the monopod but rather usefully its a 3/8th female thread. so you can use it to attach say the field monitor to the base of the column when its inverted and get the camera close to the ground but upside down.

Ok you can flip the monitor screen but i have discovered my 200mm nodal rail has 2 arca swiss grooves. You can put the rail in upside down in the ball head and i used some lightstand extenders (or magic arms) and another 200mm plate to create a cage for the camera so the camera is upright but low to the ground. with the field monitor at a useful height, (a cheap selfie stick can give even more height if you need it).

One issue with the field monitor is it doesn't come with a battery or charger but it does use sony F series batteries, so i bought a daylight balanced 160 LED panel which came with a battery and charger. It wasn't that much more than it would cost for a battery and charger alone.

Anyway if you fancy a field monitor the andycine 4k is well worth a look.

its also quite handy as a secondary monitor when editing in lightroom, It can show you whats focused the contrast ratios ...

small edit it says on the box andycine A6 and on the monitor Andycine 4K

Havent updated my profile for a while , I also have a K5 and a K1, Film Cameras include the k1000, Me super, SFXn and a Z1P (a great option for full frame on a budget almost a DSLR) . A few other misc SLR's and an old Canon 1D MkII. Did have a Panasonic G5 but I never got on with it. Ebay often has a few film camera set ups for very little money and some have decent lenses included. E.g i bought a Zenit E with Helios 44 m2 for less than most sellers sell that lens for alone. A nice realisation was that the flanged M42 adapters which are much easier to remove than the Pentax infinity adapter work well providing you don't need infinity focus. :)

I have the F1.7 M , A and now F and a few third party lenses too. Should I have bought the FA ? I bought the F mainly for the AF capability

Have you a favourite , any preferences on hoods?
