Nice find! To be honest I've never been a fan of Bose. But IMHO in the past few years they have really come around, as if they are trying to proof that they know what they are doing.

My main headphone is a Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro, which has a wonderful stage. However the highs are quite sharp, and there's no noise cancelling at all (which I'm starting to appreciate more and more).

I got myself the Surface Headphones, as I probably have to return the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 at some point and the Surface Headphones were a steal... and should I get to keep the Bose my mother will get the Microsoft ones. Sound is... meh? Way too much bass, too muffled. The Bose are FAR more balanced. Thankfully the equalizer (only accessible through a Windows PC... what a surprise) is quite flexible. You can do a lot to fix the sound, though I rather have it be good right out of the box. Only the stage seems better on the Surface Headphones. Noise cancelling is also not as good, or say, as consistent as the Bose (the Bose don't care from what direction noises come from... the Surface change depending on how I turn my head). There's also more background noise (as in white noise). Usability takes a hit to the Bose, as does comfort. Build quality feels better on Bose too, though the Surface are by no means bad. Now, for the price I paid (129 Euro) the Surface Headphones are really good. You won't get this quality elsewhere. But Microsoft initially wanted to price it against the Sony WH-1000XM3 and the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, and then you certainly get better. Especially the Bose are a gem, as they are really good at everything. The Sonys may be a little better in one or two areas, but a lot worse in other areas.

The Herman Miller is good for me. I feel a lot better now.

The Xiaomi phone arrived, and I love it. The screen is OLED, so yeah, it's good. And Xiaomi is good at calibrating their screens, it even has something like Apples True Tone that adjusts the color temperature according to the surroundings. On a phone that's like 400 Euro. Madness. Performance is good, though there are faster phones out there. But in day to day use it doesn't feel slow or sluggish, so yeah. And then there's the camera(s): I'd almost say the background blurs on the main camera like a typical kit lens set to wide angle would. Maybe more. The image quality is good, especially when using Gcam instead of the stock camera (though it depends, sometimes that is better too). Having 4 different focal lengths and decent-ish cameras behind them is a neat trick. In particular the ultra wide angle found plenty of use for shots I couldn't get otherwise, images look pleasant though perhaps a bit too processed. Sadly (?) you can't get 108 MP raw files, they get binned down to 27 MP first. Perhaps for the better. DSLRs and mirrorless cameras better innovate. It looks like Samsung is moving to 1 inch sensors in the foreseable future... all that's missing is a lens mount.

I also got myself a Lenovo Smart Display 8". At 59 Euro new (original asking price was something like 250?) I thought, yeah, why not. At first I wanted a tablet to serve me as TV screen when I don't want to on the big TV in the room (it's almost 10 years old now, and I hope it gets a lot older than that! I'm still having trouble finding anything that has better image quality). But 59 Euro... anyway, it does that well, though I have to control it through my phone. When it isn't a TV on my desk it serves as picture frame, where it displays my favorite photos from last year. The screen is pretty decent, though I wish it could adjust the color temperature to the surroundings. I'd say short of something like a Meural this is the best photo frame you can get (unless you're turning a Samsung tablet with OLED screen into a photoframe, perhaps). By far better than dedicated and similarly priced frames that tend to have terrible screens. The Google Assistant functions are also quite nice, I've connected it to my light bulbs, which means at least the Wi-Fi enabled Xiaomi bulbs can be controlled with voice commands. No more getting up to switch them on, change brightness or color. Nice. Now I need more lights.

The Denons also have arrived... the Home 250 a while ago, the Home 350 yesterday. Initially I made the mistake of placing them on my desk, nearby. Either the desk vibrates too much (yeah probably) or I was too close to them (that too)... Especially the 250 is pretty terrible on the desk. But move it further back and things change completely. Used as bookshelf speakers, ideally on a speaker stand (I put the 250 on my bigger tripod and it works well, as long as you're careful about the screw length!) it works really well. The sound is nicely balanced, detailed... I'd say two of them can act as a decent stereo system, if you don't overdo it in terms of volume (either speaker can get loud, but sound suffers at some point). And while the 250 at times can feel a bit lacking, the 350 doesn't. Hopefully I can get my hands on the B&W Formation Duo at some point, as well as the Devialet Phantom (for more than 15 minutes, at least). I'd love to place the Home 350 on my tripod, but at nearly 7 kg I'm afraid that could be a bit much... and I need to use a tripod head (thankfully I have one that's as minimal as they get, so that part shouldn't have much trouble). Right now it sits on top of my regular speaker.

Since last time I got a Bose Portable Home Speaker, a Bose Soundbar 500 and Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. Will have to return them eventually, but I am rather impressed. They are far better than their reputation, and pretty well thought out. The sound is relatively neutral, compared to competitors. But what really, REALLY impressed me was the Headphones. If you need a set of decent headphones, these may be the ones to get. The sound quality is well balanced (more so than the WH-1000XM3 from Sony... which have more bass). The noise cancelling is rather good, though not as good as Sony. But the interface is better (like the transparency mode, which works eerily good... push a button and you hear what's around you as if you're not wearing anything), and if you are making phone calls a lot, then these are absolutely perfect. I can be driving at 150 km/h with the other person thinking I'm in a very, very quiet room. I can be vacuuming my flat without the other person noticing (just a little hum or so). Pure madness.

Will be adding a Denon Home 250 soon... had the Home 350 for a day, but there was a design flaw that lead to its premature death. Waiting for replacement, and I'm hoping Denon will pack in a warning to be really careful with the tripod mount.

My very latest acquisition is a 12 TB external drive that I'm waiting for and a Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro, which will go to my mother eventually. That phone has 6 cameras... one under the screen for the fingerprint, then one in the front with 32 MP and a 1/2.8" sensor (it does pixel binning for better low light performance). The main sensor is a 108 MP sensor with 1/1.33" and f1.7, so there'll be some DoF. Lots of pixel binning happening here too, and other processing. Should be quite interesting to see how that performs. The other cameras are a 20 MP ultra wide with f2.2 (which is quite fast for an ultra wide IHMO), a 2x lens with 12 MP, f2.0 and 1/2.55" sensor and an 8 MP sensor with 3.something x zoom. All of these but the ultra wide have optical image stabilization and PDAF it seems. And then there's (so they can say 4 cameras on the back) a 2 MP macro lens with a 1/5.0" sensor... I guess that one is pretty useless. But yeah, should be interesting. Of course there's also 4K video and an AMOLED screen, 256 GB of built in storage and 8 GB of RAM. And a massive battery.

And today I received a Herman Miller Mirra... my old, 25 year old office chair collapsed, so I needed replacement. And as I use it quite a lot and bad chairs give me back pain, I went all out. The Mirra is second hand, as new they are just way too expensive. It's hard to tell of course, but so far (having sat in it 9 hours with few breaks) I'm pretty happy.

I am pretty sure I won't buy the new K, though I do intend to get a new camera. But maybe Pentax will surprise me and creates a camera that I'd want to have. I really hope so.

And I'm not selling the K-5. What for? It's not worth much anymore anyway, so I much rather keep it. IMHO it's the pinnacle of modern Pentax cameras anyway. I wouldn't trade it in for a K-1 or K-3, let alone any of the "lesser" models. Ergonomics are perfect, video quality is as good as it gets. Though I do miss the CCD sensor of my *istDS. There was something special there.

HD is king

Oh boy. Another clickbait full of it video from him.

I'm exclusively shooting 4K and wouldn't ever want to go back to FHD. His video looks bad. The focus shifting is horrible. Good lord. The AF is crap. I thought Canon was supposed to be good for AF?

Being able to reframe is nice. File size? Really? Storage is cheap. Hardware to play back and edit is cheap enough. I was doing it with a 7 year old Intel Core i5 Ivy Bridge. All I needed to do it properly was add a GeForce GTX 1060, though a lesser card could probably do too, I simply also wanted something I can use for gaming. My system is significantly faster now, but it's more a case of wanting than needing. I reckon you could easily build something adequate for about 500 Euro, excluding the monitor.

I watch on my phone, which is 1440p. That's always the resolution I select if I can. Same thing with my tablet. 1440p. The computer has a 4K screen, so that's what I use. I'm not streaming video on the go, so I don't care about bandwidth too much.

IMHO on the desktop (32" screen being quite close to me) 4K is a neccessity. Everything else gives me pixels that I don't want to see. On the phone, FHD will do, but I notice higher resolutions (4K is just too much though, except for VR glasses). On my TV, FHD is just right. The benefits of 4K aren't worth giving up the gorgeous plasma image for me. And I wouldn't notice it anyway.

But most of all: Shooting FHD is just not worth it. That's like shooting photos with a 4-6 MP DSLR. For most use cases, that will be enough. But would you do it? Would you buy a Pentax camera if it had a 6 MP camera in 2020? I mean, to view it on a monitor it's enough (well, almost, if you have a 4K screen). For most use cases it will suffice. But if everyone else is giving you 16 MP or more?

Also, he is talking about HIS viewers. Other channels will have different stats.

Besides: Pentaxes FHD is in no way comparable to, say, Panasonics FHD. There are worlds between them in terms of image quality.

Did anyone see Chris and Jordans DPReview video on new years resolutions for camera makers? They had wishes for almost every camera maker. Just with Pentax, everything seems to be perfect as Pentax wasn't mentioned.

I'm starting to think there IS some bias against Pentax at DPReview, as Crhis and Jordan did do Pentax content in the past.

Though it may also be that the wish list would be insanely long and harsh (and rightfully so), so not mentioning the brand might even be better.

Ha, funny. They seem to have forgotten to include the Pentax segment in their video. The link is pinned to the comments. And they didn't even mention video.

I find it near impossible to manually focus with my K-5. With my EVF GX80, despite having a rather meh EVF, it's really easy.

Also I would never give up 4K video anymore, if anything, I expect a new camera to have 6K or more. And two SD slots are nice, though I'd be fine if they were Micro SD.

Two Nubert nuPyramide 717 plus matching amplifier, like the Nubert nuPower A and preamp nuControl 2. Money not much of an object really applies here, as this would cost 17.000 Euro. But it sounds spectacular (and is extremely ugly). If money is even less of an object, then two Backes & Müller BM Line 35 for roughly 70.000 Euro (before adding some nicer finishing). Amazing sound at ANY volume and with any music, rather than most audiophile grade speakers which tend to discriminate against badly produced music.

Also a Stowa Antea KS, or (almost) any NOMOS... but those are luxury items that I don't _need_ and can't justify spending on right now.

Oh. And a raise would be nice.

I have a cheap adapter (all that matters is that it has a ring to control the aperture of the lens, as my DA 50 1.8 doesn't have a manual aperture ring. I'm rather satisfied with the results.

Oh shit.

(Sorry, I really couldn't resist.)

@monochrome: Reminds me of my dealerships. A Renault dealership told me it was going to get really expensive, to then proceed by saying they could fix it with something like a wooden stick, free of charge. Obviously, I kept going there again and again. And my VW dealership started by entertaining me with test drives when they were fully aware that I wasn't going to buy a car from them, because the options I wanted weren't available in the cars they had for sale. Once I bought that car in another town, I went to this dealership for service (when many go to third party workshops). The service was really good, and when I thought the absorbers had to be replaced, they had a look and told me all that was missing was some lubrication. They did that free of charge. When they messed up something, they owned up to it (with me actually benefitting). So yeah, I'll continue going there, even when I know that other workshops will do the servicing for less. And if possible, my next car will be from them. Good service and a trustworthy company that doesn't try to screw you is way more important than saving a few dollars.

The Ryzen 9 3900X is performing like a champ at 4.3 GHz all core. Nice. I've finally won the silicon lottery, after a rather disappointing Ryzen 5 3600 that barely managed 4,05 GHz all core.

I like my Tenba Cooper a lot, however that's a messenger bag (that doesn't look like a camera bag... which was crucial for me). Also, since I'm mostly carrying mirrorless gear, weight is not a problem. Size is though, because my new notebook won't fit :(

As for backpacks... how about Peak Design? They look quite cool, seem to be really practical... I almost bought the Everyday Messenger.

Clock speeds are a bit higher, so that helps. Also, having more cores can help... but it depends on the tasks. Really, in most areas you'll struggle to make full use of the 6 cores/12 threads available on the 3600. It's fast enough for most, and if not, go for the 3700. As I do video quite a bit, that's where I expect to see a nice bump when encoding 4K video. In Lightroom, nah. Perhaps when exporting a ton of photos at once, otherwise I haven't noticed much of a change. And it doesn't look like it's using the cores. The 6 core was more than enough.

There's a reason why I didn't go for the 16 core. :D

For some stretches of my daily route anything is legal, but the fuel prices/consumption stops me from driving much faster. At 210-215 it's more like 15 mpg... the downfall of small turbocharged engines. If you do push them, they use fuel for cooling.

I'm paying 1,32 Euro for E10 (95 octane with 10 percent ethanol content... it's "subsidized"... less ethanol is more expensive), which is $1,92 CAD or 1,46 USD. Fortunately my car is doing about 42 mpg (US) when driven at around 120 km/h, around 38 mpg when doing more like 140 km/h. I can get it closer to 48 if I want to and don't mind falling asleep at the wheel...

There are no bad cameras these days. Some are leaning one direction, others another, but there's nothing bad out there. You can take great photos with all of them.

Now if a reviewer sees video as sort of important, Pentax is just going to do terrible for him (and rightfully so). Someone with a strong video focus will probably love the Sigma fp, if your focus is on stills, that lack of mechanical shutter (wtf?) is going to kill it. Then a Pentax is going to do much better. IMHO dpreview wants to recommend allrounders, which seems reasonable if you don't know who you are recommending cameras for. And Pentax sadly doesn't do that anymore. Now, why that D750, which isn't particularly good for video either was picked, who knows. At least it is cheaper...?

Also, Pentax can be faulted for not bringing that much new to the table. They make very solid stills cameras, but few shots can be gotten with a Pentax that you can't get with pretty much any competitor. But those can offer significantly better video. That makes Pentax easy to pick on AND hard to recommend, because you need to be sure that needs are not going to change. Heck, even ergonomics, a Pentax strong point, has been dodgy for a few of their models, while I am in love with Panasonics high end MFT offerings which are at least as good and intuitive in terms of ergonomics.

Btw., that K-5 review also helped me purchase the K-5, although I was already shooting a Pentax DSLR before that (again, influenced by reviews).

You mean the GX80 dual kit lenses? I like those too, for their size and weight. It's so easy to bring them anywhere, and the GX80 is still pocketable with the 12-32.

The 15 1.7 is unfortunately not that cheap, more around 400-500 Euro (though for what it is I think the value is absolutely there). Don't expect too much bokeh, but it still does beautiful work. I also got the 12-60 2.8 on loan, which is a bit of a beast (relatively speaking). It did fit the G9 beautifully... I guess one day I'll have to buy em all.

How about the Panasonic Leica lenses? I quite liked the 15 1.7.

I have a K-5 and GX85, and yes, the K-5 may be better. But I'm more consistent with the GX85, the AF works better, and the size and weight of it is a huge bonus. But most of all, I love the video it shoots.

I did have a G9, and I'd say it surpasses the K-5 in terms of image quality. Dynamic range. Being able to recover highlights. I also prefer the way the photos look.

I don't understand their choice of the D750 either. However DPReview also doesn't have the same priorities as Pentax has, so it's no wonder Pentax won't do well with them.

Also, this article seems to be there to spotlight cameras on their way out that are worth a look and that are heavily discounted because of that. The K-1 is more expensive. There are reasons why, obviously, but perhaps those are usually not deemed so important.

In any case, if you disagree, don't pay attention and ignore. Every link that goes there makes them money.

True. Wish is why leveraging all that work might help Ricoh/Pentax, if they can get access to that tech. For example Xiaomi has heavily invested in improving their camera tech... what, if Ricoh was to coorperate with them? Work together, and what gets developed gets put into smartphones on the Xiaomi side and into DSLRs on the Pentax side, as far as it is useful of course.

As a part time reviewer (smartphones, some cameras, speakers, headphones, ...), that hurts me ;) Just kidding. I do read and watch reviews, but I try to form my own opinion from what I see. You can get some insight into the gear before actually buying it, and figure out if you'll end up liking it. I typically research a lot before the purchase, so I've never sent anything back yet.

The 4 phones I actually owned I've kept for a long time, until they really get too frustrating to use. But I think a camera using such software would be much longer lived, because of how limited the feature set is. At some point you won't be able to run newer software, but so be it. It's not the main functionality. And resetting the phone and then loading a settings file would be relatively trivial, so if you feel degradation, that'd be fixed. The only main issue besides initial performance and stability concerns (which I also have), is that the built in flash memory may be worn out.

Because the risk is pretty slim of having an app ruin the device to the point of bricking it, this here be dragons setting would really just be there to cover the manufacturers ass. But I don't think the makers of Android phones have to deal with this, so again, I wouldn't be worried about users being unable to use their camera and sending them in.

I would also like to see a K-01 type camera, though with better ergonomics. And the K-mount should turn into some sort of Kslim-mount. The K-mount adapter should be in the box/available as a bundle at the very least. With the adapter, the camera should work just like any other Pentax. But this enables users to adapt other lenses (M42, ...) and allows Pentax to develop smaller, more portable lenses. So when you want maximal portability, you throw on such a lens. If you want maximum image quality, you use adapter and a lens designed for great photos.

Several microSD slots would be great, as my K-5 LOVES killing SD cards. However some high performance camera (perhaps also with better video capabilities) could be using a M.2 2280 slot. That would mean up to 3 GB/s write speeds and 1 TB space for 130+ Euro.

For me, the perfect camera was the Panasonic G9. Add a smaller, lighter and slimmer camera like the GX80 and you have a wonderful kit. It would be nice if Pentax could create something competitive.
