My K-5 returned yesterday and apparently a lot of work had to be done:
-Complete dismantle
-Replacing the sequence motor, I really don't know what this is
-Replacing the Auto-Focus motor, already?
-Calibrating the electronic level
-Complete checkup
-Testing

I am out shooting now :)...

That's exactly what happened on my birthday a few days ago! I don't know what caused it but it looks a little like the Sticky Mirror Syndrome of the LX...
Mine is to be sent in for repair, hopefully under warranty, I hope it will not take more than two weeks (knowing that the repair shop is about 56 km away from my home).
Pentax service sucks over here in Belgium, it has all to do with the rigidity of the Benelux Pentax Agent, they have a very stiff and old fashioned administration and a 'strange' attitude to deter customers.

When you go out in to the cold and you can't stand the freezing feeling of the metal parts of your camera, then cover these with a few layers of gaffer tape, but don't forget to cut some holes for the operating knobs and levers.
When the warm weather returns just strip of the gaffer tape...
Good gaffer tape shouldn't leave glue marks.

Fotoimpex.de from Berlin, as they are the owners of ADOX, this make them, besides resellers, manufacturers too!
They had the famous and wonderful AGFA MCC B&W photo paper reborn, made on the original AGFA machines operated by former AGFA engineers using the AGFA formulas! The same for the chemicals.
Now they are working on the AGFAPAN films!
Could anyone desires for more?

Pentax LX shutter problem and batteries.

Now as I have my LX's put aside (due to digital...), I am just testing them time to time. Therefore, in the film chamber, I put a pice of paper cut out of an envelope that came from the bank containing some important documents. The Inner side of these envelopes are printed with white numbers on a dark grey background to make the contents unreadable when held against the light, this side is turned toward the cell. This printing is fairly near to the reflectivity of the film's surface. So, no need to put film in the LX when testing.
Testing regularly is important to keep the mechanics of the camera in good shape, rest rusts...

The Aperture priority AE of the LX is superb!
In my film days, I shot with 3 of them simultaneously on several locations, mostly industry, on FUJI Provia, H400 and Tungsten.
I had two tripods with an LX on each and had them shoot the darkest parts of the production halls in AE for hours, and, meanwhile, used the third one handheld for details (if possible). Having 9 lenses, this was easily done.
In order to control the working status of the camera, I made an little LED light that was connected to the sync port of the camera showing if the exposure was still going on. The sync port contact is closed while exposing...
Do use the silver oxide batteries!
But, the release button can shortcut and drain the batteries, I had this happening once, the little switch inside the button was worn out...

That's like Pentax/Nikon using a Sony sensor...

In the Automotive world, the same is happening over here (Europe) too, the Far East is leading now...
And in order to survive, GM and FORD are closing down West-European plants and sacking more than 20 000 workers, creating a social battlefield!
Soon ore later, this will end in over protected home markets, what then?

K-5 over sensetive to LED lights

The quality, manufacturing and the light characteristics of LED are evolving fast, what was an issue a few months ago might be a nonissue now.
But still, some LEDs are of bad quality and poorly powered, which is as important as the Diode itself.
I am using LED lights in my studio for about a year now, the Rosco's LitePad HO, these are built for photography and don't show any major issues, beside a faint green dominant which can be corrected with a 1/8 minus Green filter on the torch (see: PHOTOEIL , the reproduction on the web is rather poor).
And be aware of monochromatic lights, particularly the LEDs, these are emitting a kind of over saturated, peaking narrow wave, light which is difficult to be handled by the post processing software (and some cameras).
Any light source that is deviating from the CIE CRI, the D5000 standard and has a colour dominant, can be considered as more or less monochromatic because a part of the (visual-) spectrum is cut away.
Read the very interesting postings by Ben-Edect!

It has all to do with budget, application, purpose and how they are built.

In order to conclude, a few questions:
- what are the technical qualities of the film?
- how was the film exposed?
- was the camera/metering working as it should?
- how old was the film (expiring date)?
- how was that film kept: in the fridge or...
- how long between the shooting and the developing?
- how was the film processed: in a one hour lab or in a normal C-41 lab, on a monday morning after a whole week-end of inactivity?
- if printed how are the prints made: analogue or digital, kind of paper, printing procedure, positive processing?
- if scanned, how was it done?

All these parameters, and a lot more, can influence the results...

SD card preference for your K-5

As I can't stand the idea that a whole day's work is written on one card, I have 10 rather small SD cards, to me the reliable ones: SanDisk Ultra 8 GB.
Speed is not that important, who said thad the Ultras were that slow, but reliability and diversity is as well...
And whenever it is possible, I shoot with the Eye-Fi connected to the iPad, not that 'fast' but interesting.
Video is not my cup of tea.
I always had the impression when speed is involved, reliability and quality digressed, but I do agree that this is a very personal point of view!

Another "clunk" noise topic... K5 vs K20D ?

I have the K10,K20 and the K5. I almost forgot all about the K10, but the K20, switched on or not, makes a 'clunky' noise when handled, that's the sensor's SR system.
The K5 is, compared to the K20, a silent camera, no "clunk" when handled, but there is something like a little ticking sound, caused too by the sensor's SR system which is deferent now, that can be heard in a 'gentle environment'....
An other reason for that clunky noise can be the lens, so can this clunk be heard with a 'naked' body?;)

Is this K5 a new one? You are talking about a lousy packing, normally Pentax packs its stuff the right way, thus well protected, in a rather small but nicely designed shiny silver on black coloured box.

Oh yes, one of the main 'items' of the digital tsunami is, among others, paranoia...

Shutter indicator?

I ran into the same situation long time ago.
What I made then was a DIY indicator light that could be connected to the PC socket.
It was a very small and weak LED light, as used on a keychain, and powered by an even small 1,5V battery that was switched, via a short PC cable I soldered parallel on the original switch.
When the shutter opened, and thus closed the PC contact and doing this during the exposure time, the partially blinded LED served as an indicator.
Simple, cheap and efficient...

Shutter release cable

This is the best place to get a very decent cable release, actually these are the best money can buy, Linhof, Leica, Hasselblad and a lot of others are getting theirs at the brothers Schreck: Gebr. Schreck - your specialist for cable releases

I have several in different colours of the Model series Plastics with the butterfly handle with spherical brake of 50 cm long and use them on my PRONTOR shutters which are rather delicate little beasts and they need two cable releases...
The Cloth Professional Release (50 cm) is the best one can get for Hasselblad.
Don't forget that a bad cable release can hurt the stutter's release system!
A cable release, when used professionally, lasts about 5 to 6 years at it's best, always take some spear...

One angle about the K5II I never hear...

So, if I am not mistaking, the K-5IIs has exactly the same sensor as the original K-5 but just the AA filter removed, that's all, besides the improved AF and a new processor?
Thus, the very same sensor should perform better due the the lack of AA and the new processor and the sharpness would be better too due to the removed AA and the better AF.
And the rear LCD is exactly the same too, it's just mounted differently without the 'air gap' for better viewing?
Then, theoretically, the K-5IIs will be a better performer, as a new camera would be, correct me if I am wrong...
If so, this is a step forward!
