Replacement focusing screens now available for K-1

K-1 focusing screen is attached pretty much the same way like it is for example in K-5 ... it is actually little bit easier to remove. My K-1 came with couple of dust spots so I've removed it to blow them off and then attached it back.
The overlay is somewhere behind it, I did not had to mess with it at all.
I expect replacement focusing screens will work just fine if they are not much thicker than the original one.
If they now have the S-type for K-1 I'm going to give it a try

DA* 60-250 mod for FF

I guess everyone has seen the samples where DA* 60-250 "almost" covers FF with some dark corners.

But Pentax has a patent for a FF 60-250 lens so I thought maybe it is just the baffle at the back causing the dark corners.

So I finally got some time and disassembled mine to remove the baffle - and tested it on sony a7r. The results are pretty good! Dark corners were gone at all focal lengths.
I've noticed some light vingeting on some focal lengths wide open but no more than what I expect from any lens.
Resolution outside the APS-C zone is good as well, except maybe at 250 (but generally mine is somewhat worse at 250 than for example at 200 even on aps-c).

It is a pretty easy mod to do - just unscrew the mount (and make sure you dont loose those spring-loaded contact pins). The baffle is just a black tube that is glued (!?) with some spots of white glue to the back of the mount.
(I find it litte weird that the baffle is just glued that way - almost like it was not part of the original design and they just figured a way do add it later.)

Apparently the glue is not strong so you should be able to easily pry it out of the mount and re-assemble the lens without it. - And you'll have your FF lens ready.

Mod is fully reversible, as you can just glue the baffle back in its place. I guess it's purpose is to reduce internal reflections but I did notice any problems in that regard while testing.
I tested without the hood but I guess it should be fine at least in the 90-250 range.

Anyway, it looks like the FF camera is delayed again but I thought someone might find this information useful.

K-3II or KP which one????

I'd choose K-3 II ... nothing beats the true flagship K7/K5/K3 style body. Let's hope K-3 II was not the last model to have these ergonomics and features set.

seems most people don't realize the dpr score and gold/silver award labels have nothing to do with this article, but are just automatically pulled and displayed from the review database.
their scores are only somewhat meaningful compared to the state of the market when the review was released

If you are extremely masochistic and lucky - you might be able to take the lens block out and stick it somehow inside K-1 in LV mode as it essentially does Mirror Lock Up.

I'd like to add few more pros/cons to this (Just considering viewfinder shooting):

1. K-1 gives you SR with MF lenses wich the older gen Sonys don't (A7R, A7, A7S)
2. K-1 has center spot focus confirmation for MF (anyone knows a good technical reason why this is limited to the center spot only???) which in my experience is reliable enough for lenses stopped up to f8 (it can't lock at all at f11 and beyond) - Sonys don't have a similar feature (useful in conditions where you can't "trust" your own eyes :)).
3.Sonys that have IBIS also have a stabilized viewfinder - this combined with high level of magnification in the viewfinder allows for much more precise manual focus than peaking (but but peaking is in general also better implemented in Sonys).
4. EVFs of course give you WYSIWYG exposure in viewfinder but also brighter viewfinder in dark conditions (that helps with MF).
5. Changing the FL value for IBIS when changing lenses - on Sonys you can assing that to a button , on K-1 you can assing that to the quick menu, but the fastest way is to power cycle the camera. Both have an indication what's the currently selected FL but both are not really "in your face" so if you are not paying attention you can forget to adjust it when swapping lenses.
6. You can actually Autofocus MF lenses on Sonys with the TechartPro adapter (including SMC Pentax-AF 35-70mm F2.8 that Pentax can't AF anymore :) ) and it actually works well in daylight at least.

You won't be dissapointed with the 16-85. Definately not a waste of money when upgrading from the kit lens.

DA* 55mm 1.4 on K-1 good extreme corner sharpness?

Extreme corners at infinity are smeared and stay smeared even if you stop to f8. At f11 it almost catches up with fa50 1.4 but is still worse. The rest of the frame has actually very good sharpness.
There might be significant copy variation as I guess these were only tested on APS-C before leaving the factory.

DA* 55mm 1.4 on K-1 good extreme corner sharpness?

Here are the corners at 100% of DA* 55 1.4 vs FA 50 1.4 at f8 (just a quick handheld snapshots):

On a side note I've noticed K-1 would randomly pick higher iso than really necessary if you leave that to auto as you can see on these two, but there's no real difference in noise between iso 100 and 200 ...

K-1 OVF overlay - is there a way to keep the red illumination on ?
Posted By npc

So I'm having trouble seeing the focus points and the hoizontal/vertical levels in dark conditions (or when using aps-c lenses that don't cover enough of the frame) since the overlay indicators are all black. When focus is achieved they are all illuminated with red light that makes them clearly visible but only for a very short moment. As they flash all at once including the grid lines it is just too much information for me to absorb in such short time ...

I was wondering if there's some solution to that problem - like keeping the red light on or triggering it on a button press - but could not find anything in the menus other than turning it off completely

DA* 60-250 mod for FF

This is what it looks like when removed from the lens. The white spots around the rim are the glue that used to hold it in place.

I've just removed it from the lens for now and use it like this - but ideally the part that looks like a felt ring inside the tube should be cut out as it causes the vingetting (so the piece basically becomes just a tube ) and the remaining "tube" then glued back in place.

Super soft edges on DA 15mm Ltd

Thanks, but these are some web-sized 870x576 pics not full-sized ... maybe I should have asked for a raw file instead to avoid confusion.

These *632* pages are full of scaled and cropped images as well, and I enjoy visiting them from time to time like the other lens clubs threads, but can't really be used as a reference if you wish to compare against the performance of your own copy. Something similar like OP's scene works well - there's enough fine texture (grass) all the way to the corners and you can in most cases find something similar to shoot with your own copy and compare.

The 15ltd suffers from poor corners, field curvature, decentering and sample variation - there's no conspiracy that can hide it :)
However, that's not the point - you can take great images with it if you learn how to compensate for these - OP's picture shows how bad a bad copy could be (and you don't even need a bigger size to see this) so I got curious how good a "perfect" one can be - but for this you need to do some serious pixel peeping, web-sized won't do.
