Apparently, theres no easy way to submit a photo without a computer (iphone and ipad do not allow attachement locations) or a public respository such as Flicker to store images. Here is my final attempt to upload an image, this time by using a work PC after downloading to PC using the link in the last post and browsing to the file to upload... Hope it was worth it... Didn't want to alter the composition, only the light values adjusted with snapseed on my iphone...

Hmmm... Downloaded a resize app that takes the quality down quite a few notches to get to 900 pixels, but here it is... Let's see if this works from google drive...

DA* 300mm Polarizer help Exus or B+W?

Following up on this thread I decided on the Marumi EXUS Polarizer for the anti static and other lens coatings as well as the extremely high transmission rate. Initial indoor nighttime exposure tests only saw one full f-stop of light loss between bare lens and polarizer. That's much brighter than both the Marumi DHG super and B+W KSM MRC filters I use on other lenses, but will have to wait for a sunny day to test further and check color cast, if any.

DA* 300mm Polarizer help Exus or B+W?

I just found the NEW Lenstip.com Circular Polarizer test from Nov 2015 With the Hoya Fusion (evo?) anti-static on top with the B+W and Marumi co-listed as #3. Not much information about the Hoya Fusion, other than it appears to have some good color and deeper IR cut, but at an overall higher light attenuation than the other two. Oh, and it's a lot cheaper too.
I think for me, I want to get anti-static, so the Marumi EXUS with higher light transmission may be the winner with the Hoya a very close second.

DA* 300mm Polarizer help Exus or B+W?

Yet another which filter to buy thread... Need advice from those who actually use the DA* 300mm with a 77mm polarizer for birding in dry desert environments.
I've narrowed it down to Either the Marumi EXUS or the B+W KSM HTC (effectively the same price). I'm leaning toward the Marumi simply because of the Exus Anti-static coating for the dry desert environment, but wanted to get opinions on IQ differences (if any) and real world experience between the two?
Adorama points out that both are High Transmission filters with 1.5 or under stops

Marumi EXUS
Filter Factor: About 2.5 (1.3 stops)
Multi-Coated: Anti-static and water- and oil-repellent coating

B+W KSM HTC
Filter Factor: 2 to 2.8 (1 to 1.5 stops)
Multi-Coated: Yes

For reference, I already use the 67mm B+W KSM MRC on a Tamron 28-75 and a 58mm Marumi DHG Super on a 55-300. They both appear about the same when viewed side by side, but I'm interested in the new generations for the DA*300 and don't want to compromise IQ if one doesn't match well to the Pentax glass.
I also have an 86Cmm Professional Tiffen polarizer that I could use step down rings to fit, but that negates the use of the hood and IMHO, not as good as the other two.

Anyone have specific usage of these two on the DA*300?

New DA* 300 has SDM noise - Opinions? Failing? Return?

@ bertwert - Wow, The video puts it in perspective. In the video, I can hear the indicator window racking back and forth, but can not hear the motor. On my lens, its the opposite - I can hear the motor clicking from closer to the front, much louder than the indicator window.
I want to try to make a video to show my experience

@ waterfall - That was my concern too - I thought the DA* series were supposed to be about the best modern Pentax lenses they made and the experience should reflect that. If the SDM is misaligned, damaged, or minimally lubricated, it could fail with heavy use.

From the other responses so far, it sounds like I shouldn't worry about it too much and just enjoy this beautiful lens. I really like wildlife and bird photography (on a budget), and this lens was about 3x the price of any other lens I've acquired so far and has been rated the highest without going 3x higher in price for a minimal or similar increase in IQ and further reach.

New DA* 300 has SDM noise - Opinions? Failing? Return?

Hi all, New DA* 300 f4 -Need advice and comments before returning the lens or exploring "other" options...
Facts:
Second day of testing with K3 (fw 1.11) and K500 on tripod in dry, sunny days with temperatures around 65 F (Ideal conditions).
Purchased new from Adorama - 30 day return(?) and came with 4 year leaf warranty.
First DA* series lens, but second SDM lens.
Pictures look GREAT and focus is nearly perfect in spot mode of birds in trees.
I have a concern with the noise that is coming from the SDM motor. It is louder than expected and sounds like high pitched "digital noise" and clicking as it is attempting to focus. It has failed to focus on a few occasions, going from near to infinity before giving up or locking in shaded areas.
I am comparing the noise to my only other SDM lens, the 18-135, which is nearly silent and has more of a faint "whirring" sound. In contrast, the DA*300 is much louder and more abrupt and does not sound right.
Am I being paranoid or does this sound like it could be an early indication of an SDM failure or an issue with the SDM in general.
I am upgrading from the Sigma 170-500, which is MUCH louder with the screwdrive AF, but I thought the SDM motor of the DA* should be nearly silent.

On K50/K500 2nd page of camera settings "Lens Correction" You can turn on "Distortion Correction" and "Lat-Chromatic-Ab Adj". This works very well based on the chipset in the standard or kit lenses when shooting jpeg and not doing any raw processing. In your bird image the purple fringe of Chromatic Aberration of the lens should have been corrected in camera with these options on.

Check out the specific lens details in the forums database for more information. This thread is to test for posting photos, but I can offer my opinions on your questions.
I've had the K500 (Same as K50 without focus confirmation in viewfinder or WR) and now the K3. Although there are lot more features on the K3 and its overall a nicer camera, comparitive image quality is nearly the same (excluding resolution differences) with a slight edge to the 50/500 with less noise in upper ISO ranges. Without going into specific lenses, generally the kit 55-300 lens is adequate and versatile and if you use the camera's built in lens correction options, it's pretty good up to around 260mm before it starts to get softer. A dedicated Prime will almost always have better IQ and usually is a bit brighter, but there are several variations and options that can make a difference.
I posted the hummingbird pic a few posts back using the K50 and the DA L 55-300 kit lens.

For reference, My typical settings are TAv mode keeping ISO at 400 max. Shutter is usually 1/1000 to 1/4000 at 5.6 aperture in full sunlight. This is using an FA 100mm 2.8 macro at about 1.5 meters from subject and on a tripod.
AA and SR are off, but need to recheck a few of the other auto NR settings although they shouldn't (assumed) be applied. I'm still learning the nuances of the new body, but its taking a while...

I feel I'm in the same situation and hopefully can work through it... I've used the k-500 for the past 15 months and got some excellent results. Now comparing with the new K3 I still can't seem to match the same quality as the 16MP sensor on the K500. I keep switching back to the K500 to find shots to keep. Same lenses, locations and subjects (hummingbirds) and the K3 keeps losing out. Seems I can't resolve the feather detail with the K3 compared to the K500...
I'm going to have to setup a test environment to do some critical comparisons, then will have to try the suggestions and start over from scratch and compare again.
One Question: With the differences in sensor resolution (16 vs 24), I should still be able to crop a test sheet photo to the same physical viewing size between the two for A/B comparison, even though the crop factor will be different right? I'm thinking for the images to be cropped to the same size, the 16MP might be 100% and the 24MP will be 66% or something similar...

To all who ask, there is no access to the back of the cameras. It's in a middle cube against a full wall. Here is about as best as I could get yesterday with a phone looking down on one of the back cameras. I wasn't trying to get a pic of the back, so it wasn't my focus.
Trying to get an angled shot never worked because of really bad glare, so I had to basically lay the phone flat on the glass while looking around innocently.

Macro Lenses for Pentax K-500

This is just a guess, but if you are using the K500, price and budget may be the first thing on your mind! Nothing wrong with that as I have used the K500 with low cost macro solutions and have had very good results without a dedicated lens. It all comes down to how much working distance do you need and your willingness to learn full manual controls? For close focus objects there are a lot of options to reverse lenses or add low cost tubes.
With just the cheap included DAL 18-55 kit lens, I was able get a low cost pk mount to 49mm reversing ring for $6 USD. I reversed the kit lens and held the aperture open and had the date on a dime in almost full frame a few mm from the back glass. I then purchased a cheap 35-80 fa zoom lens with a sticky auto focus for $10 and it makes an excellent reversal macro lens - although it's quality is poor as a regular lens, as a reversed macro, it is amazing. There are lots of other combos or lenses to try and it's a fun learning experience without spending too much money. I've used various good cheap primes with extension tubes and even splurged on a Vivitar 2x macro focusing tele converter for $40 to use on old primes that can give 1-1 views.
Full disclosure - I like full manual lenses from early film days and the options I can get with them.
(adding two images pulled down from social media and resized by the forum attachment rules, so images are less than ideal for detailed viewing)
* Dime with reversed Pentax FA 35-80 lens
* Flower (about 5mm) with 50mm lens and Vivitar 2x macro focusing teleconverter.

So this is for a year as opposed to the month I get when ordering through Adorama? I was waiting for the backorder to apply my credit, but I may have to do this deal instead or in addition?

EDIT: I went ahead and made the BF donation. The lens database alone is worth it to support this site - Thanks!

The 540 Flash with the k-3 Mystery....SOLVED!

That description sounds about right with my experience. I picked up the k3 bundle with grip and Flucard and added the 50/1.8 through Adorama, but couldn't add the flash. I had it on another tab at B&H as an add on for $50 with the bundle, but when we tried to duplicate that with the Adorama CSR, it would no longer come up.
I waited a bit too long to make up my mind, but still got a great deal with the FluCard and lens. Seems I just missed the option to add it to my total bundle.

I just got the k3 bundle and tried to get the flash through my order at Adorama too, but the rep couldn't find the 540 flash at B&H to add to my purchase. Bummer, would've like to get the flash as well...

Helen,
If you are able to do any research and let us know of a way to add the flash for $50 to an existing (just purchased) bundle, that would be awesome!

Does this mean it WILL work on the K-500?
If so , I would love to adapt some old Nikkor, Olympus and Yashica lenses to expand my creativity using manual focus lenses with the catch-in-focus feature!
If the K-500 is needed for "compatibility testing", I could do that too...
