Last night I accompanied Tara Bassett of Take It From Tara to the Pride Parade downtown, I took my K-3ii w/ my trusted 16-85 and my K70 with the 55-300 PLM. When I shot the Easter Parade is was an overcast rain-ish day. I took my DA*55 and DA*300 and really like the IQ of the photos I shot that day even if I was self-limiting my FoV.

On Wednesday, Tara and I covered the memorial for the Pulse Night Club Massacre Anniversary and I took my 21mm Ltd, 70mm Ltd and DA*55. I ended up using the 21 and 55 for most of the shots.

Friday, I almost took the DA*300 to the Parade instead of the PLM Zoom but chickened out at the last minute not wanting to carry too much or self-limit focal length range.

It turns out my favorite shots were taken with the longer zoom. In any case, it seemed to do alright with 3 different complexions.

Edit: The eye roll in the third photo makes it my favorite of the hundreds of frames shot.

And cropped a bit. The spider was sheltering under a leaf in the rain near my front porch. Itís total length, legs and all, is about an inch. Iím trying to improve my techniques and know very little about focus stacking so far.

Illuminated by Pentax 360 on the hot shoe diffused with Mag Mod Mag Sphere.

Yesterday I found this girl seeking shelter from the rain under a leaf on a Front Porch Safari. It was a challenge but I like this one.

Gosh, it’s my lucky week finding this thread. I had a DFA 100 WR and 1.4X TC already and thanks to the work posted here by BrianR and others and doundounba’s samples and flickr page, my Raynox DCR 250 and adapter arrived today. Already played with it a bit on my front porch. There is a butterfly exhibit at the local zoo. Let me play with lighting and exposure settings and I’ll be ready to go.

I tagged long with Tara Bassett on her Wagginí Wednesday Take It From Tara LIVEcast for a quick promo shoot at the Louisville Zoo. I brought the usual gear, K-3II with 16-85 and K70 with 55-300 PLM and an 8-16 Sigma and a DA*55 in reserve. As we headed to the gorilla house I swapped out the 55-300 for the DA*55 and wound up leaving it on for the rest of the tour as many animals were inside escaping from the late afternoon heat.

Iím pleased at how the gorilla portraits cleaned up in post since I was shooting through dirty thick glass.

Wyatte’s Forelegs and two of his favorite things, mud and a tennis ball.

My usual two body 3 lens kit includes the 16-85 on the K-3II and 55-300PLM on the K-70 and an UWA zoom or a true macro in reserve but I’m deeply infatuated with my DA*300. So lately it’s been living on one body and I’m toting the 18-135 on the other to fill in the gap between 85 and 300 and give me near subject capability.

I took a pair of Q7s and a cargo pocket full of lens to Bernheim Forestry when my sister came to visit me. They covered all bases pretty well.

1) Cedar Wax Wing through glass at Education Center
2) The Dark Knight and the Crack of Dawn
3) Mothra
4) Red Eared Slider and Blue Gill in Black and White
5) Q7 works for one handed selfies, too.

Iím not on Facebook and have deliberately minimized my online footprint for years until very recently with flickr and instagram accounts at the urging of my best friend, a social media marketing guru. My bestie has 10,000 followers across her social media platforms and is always having to feed content to them through her Facebook LIVEcasts and Instagram feeds. As a courtesy I started following her on Instagram, since she follows me, and it amazed me how much informational stuff she posts on behalf of her social justice causes and in self-promotion. She has become a local ďbrandĒ and does make things happen but itís more work and exposure than Iíd care to experience.

One of my daughters-in-law asked me if there was a camera that automatically sent pictures to Facebook as they were snapped. I didnít have an answer but I had a question. Why would you want that? (I didnít ask it aloud.)

Considering everybody I know who uses a cell phone as a camera only posts AND views photos on social media on a cell phone sized screen, I don’t see vastly improved cell phone image quality being enough to motivate those folks to spend the $1000+ dollars for an iPhone XS MAX.

Anyway, at this point, I’m pretty sure I’m married to Pentax and have 150% of my photo needs met and 99.8% of my wants covered. The .2% is TBD. My iPhone 5SE is on the company service plan so I don’t even have that expense.

I was discussing my photo hobby and LBA disorder in another online hobby forum, boardgamegeek.com, and a fellow posted a photo of a new iPhone XS Max on a tripod and a beautiful landscape taken with said phone and asked, “If you can get a photo like that with a phone, why buy all that expensive camera gear?” I did not make an effort to respond and just let the thread roll on to the next thing
.
In parallel to that question, I bought myself another electric guitar for my upcoming 69th birthday and told my bestie about it. She said, “I don’t understand why anyone would need any more than one guitar. I have a piano and don’t need another piano.” I almost started into an explanation of the tonal differences of single coil vs P90 vs humbucking pick ups and decided to treat it as a rhetorical question and just let that conversation roll on to the next thing as well.

GAS is GAS in any hobby.

Following up on my previous post. I have taken my K-01 w/the 18-135 on a few outings. As normhead pointed out, handling it as a telephoto is a bit challenging to compose with. That may be in part due to being far sighted with old eyes. I like an OVF when using longer lenses. Being blessed with an over abundance of lenses and body choices, Iíll most likely keep the 21mm Ltd or a 35mm on the K-01 and take a DSLR when I need more reach.

Iíve started slipping a Q7 + Lens shield in the cargo pocket of my shorts when I foray out on a walk or another project. I think Iím finally getting the hang of it.

1) From the Big Four Pedestrian Bridge, where I go when otherwise uninspired.
2) Across the counters at Con Huevos waiting for a late breakfast.
3) At the Michael Vick/Ocho Cinco football camp.

The City of Louisville holds an event on Memorial Day Weekend in which the public is invited to place 15,000 American Flags on the lawn at Water Front Park. Last year I went with a friend who was LIVEcasting the event. For some reason that I cannot recall I just took my K-3ii and the 16-85mm lens.

Early on I decided to seek out participants wearing flag themed clothing.

1) Captain America. If I say self-explanatory is it really so?

2) I saw this child when almost all the flags had been placed and grabbed this shot. As soon as her mother saw me, she started hollering for her daughter to say, “Cheese.” Not what I had in mind and did not save those shots. But I showed her folks this one got permission to post this and sent them the file as well. Her father is in the Coast Guard stationed locally.

3) Low and close but cropped square. Back then I wasn’t posting anything online except by sending photos to my friend for her social media platforms. She preferred square crops and rather than let her or instagram decide on the crop, I sent her how I wanted it.

4) This young woman was photographing the event with a Canon DSLR. However, she stopped and asked a young man to photograph her. While he was still figuring out how to work the DSLR, I captured this one.

Why A BIG Camera When The Latest Smart Phones Are So Capable?

My bestie is a cell phone photographer. She is a social justice advocate and has 10K followers across her social media platforms. For her an iPhone is ideal to document or promote events and immediately post on instagram. She also LIVEcasts events on Facebook using the same gear. She is a local media personality and social influencer. Her involvement with homelessness and animal rights and rescues has given a purpose to much of my photography hobby. (I’ve done the photography for 3 magazine articles she’s had published)

I know that 99% of the photos I take for her are going to be viewed on someone’s cellphone screen regardless my investment in equipment.

But that said, what amuses me is, if we are taking her dogs on a walk after dark she’ll comment, “Isn’t the moon exquisite?” whip out her phone and while on the move take a one handed shot and be surprised the image doesn’t match what she was seeing in her mind’s eye.

Whereas I, with a little bit of preparation and work in post, can get this and it’s not even a great moon photo.

EDIT: I carry an iPhone 5SE. It is provided by my employer and on his plan. I can upgrade to whatever I want as long as I pay for it myself. My friend uses an iPhone 8.

Ha! The last time I saw Cindy at the park she told me she thought the DA*300 was a phallic symbol. Told me twice, after I pretended not to hear the comment the first time. She might be trying to get my attention or imply Iím compensating for something.

I was just over at boardgamegeek.com in their off topic forum called Chit Chat participating in a thread titled Why I Will Never Be Rich. I posted my “This is madness!” Photo of all my Pentax gear and someone followed up with a photo of an iPhone on a tripod aimed at a stunning landscape next to the resulting stunning landscape photograph.

That poster asked, “If you can do this with an iPhone, why do you need expensive camera gear?”

I haven’t decided if I want to invest the time to reply but I did go through my favorite photos looking to see how many I could or couldn’t have gotten with a cell phone. But I haven’t shot very many landscapes in the last two years.

A beautiful evening perfect for taking the cameras somewhere, but where? As posted elsewhere, when in doubt I go to the riverside. In this case, the Big 4 Pedestrian Bridge. I photographed Poppa John Stampley the universal blues man and one of my favorite buskers, a barge tow headed up river and I paid particular attention to the long shadows being cast by folks below.

Top) I took a lot of shots but the step runner gave me the most dynamic pose of that bunch. Sheís wearing sandals so she is not exercising but just happened to pick up the pace at that moment. Did some PP to please my eye and itís ok.

My DA* 300 is living on my K3II now. A friend calls it my paparazzi lens even though neither of us know what lenses paparazzi use.

Bottom) I was photographing Big Poppa from a distance with the 300 and happened to turn around and catch this young lady posing for cell phone pictures taken by a girlfriend. I discretely captured 3 poses and this one makes me smile the most.
