It is somewhat sharp. Definitely I would not call it blurry when stopped down. But the the lens needs some stopping down for acceptable results. I shoot it at f11 for casual landscapes where f2.8 I'd use for extreeme closeups. You can check my review of it here and see some other photos. I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it already but the existing DA HD 55-300 f4-5.8 screw drive is almost full frame. There is slight vignetting though. Some of it can can be corrected. It vignettes the most without possibility to correct somewhere in the 100mm range, I don't remember. I use this lens on K-1 and it can make good photos. I assume Ricoh will do small mods to this lens optical design and with new motor it will work well. I hope it is PLM. But even DC motor and it will be Ok. Great travel lens with 28-105 if it is on par with this lens optically.

If you still have any concerns regarding firmware update you should definitely have someone more experienced to that for you, either a friend or send it to service center. There are improvements with new firmwares, such as square crop mode and night vision LCD colors and other hidden improvements...

Samyang 85mm f1.4 glowy wide open...

In order to see what the depth of field at f1.4 on 85mm looks like please see below photos that I took on K-5II while using OVF indicator only. K-5II doesn't have a focus peaking, one very usable thing for manually focusing fast lenses. It's live view is mostly useless for this as resolution of it's LCD screen is not big enough. It's different story with K-1 which has very usable live view. Please click on the photos so that you can see them in full resolution. The second photo is screen capture at 100% magnification in my Photoshop window. As you can see, DOF is very shallow and you will need patience and practice. Expect this with any other lens that you will get. Basically you need to learn how to use it to it's full potential, understand it's bad and good side, etc. Good luck.

Did you try to completely magnify image in live view while focus peaking? K-500 has focus peaking, right? These shots looks like mis-focused at f1.4 on APS-C sensor. Get the same when I miss focus on K-5II while on K-1 it's a different story. You should be getting close to 3rd photo with little practice and patience. Don't give up quickly.

Third shot is what you should be getting. It seems you didn't focus right in other shots. As everyone told you already, it's not easy to get perfect focus at f1.4.

I would not agree 100% with your statement that when shooting in direct sunlight it is unusable. Try to use the quality of the lens to your advantage. This lens can produce good results if you give yourself the chance to learn how to use it.

For example these two photos demonstrate my claims above. Portraits were shot with sun behind my mom's back. Shot at Pentax K-5II and Samyang 85mm f1.4 fully opened @ f1.4 being focused through OVF. Fine tuned focus settings to -10 and relied on focus indicator in the OVF.

And the last one was shot on Pentax K-1 @ f1.4. Fined tuned focus at -8 and used OVF indicator. I can consistently get focused photos this way even at f1.4. This is basically a jpeg from a camera. I just used it to show you how consistent results can be across the cameras. I like it more on K-1 as it is easier to focus through OVF plus you have focus peaking. When you used LV with focus peaking it easier and more precise of course, but you need to hold camera in awkward position, i.e. not at your face to stabilize it, but it does the job fine. Of course I would want EVF at my eye for any manual lens but that would mean going mirrorless at this moment. Hoping for Pentax hybrid OVF/EVF very soon.

This lens can really be sharp wide open when taking portraits. But you need either focus by peaking at live view at maximum magnification or do fine adjustment of the focus in the camera. When focusing through optical viewfinder experiment if the correct focus confirmation is achived from left or from right side when turning focus ring. I use it on K-1. Will post some shots later on.

This guy would do the same with the cheapest 85mm lens on the market and that is Samyang 85mm. He obviously knows how to take photos and has beautiful models. In other words, upgrade your skills not necessarily your gear.
