Thanks for the suggestion! I know I should try to get close to at least 300mm, but my budget is small and there aren't that many offers for Pentax lenses here, guess I'll give ebay a serious look.

Nature A heron eating

This is a rufescent tiger heron, in Venezuela we call them "pájaro vaco"; it's incredible how some animal names vary between languages!
I took this picture in one of the parks of my city, while some birds roam freely, it isn't their natural environment. Still, I think it felt right at home! It was eating (whatever it is that it was eating) really close to two vultures that also candidly posed to my camera :)

Pentax K-S2 or Canon 70/80D? Worried about aperture problem

I have a K-S2, I started reading about the aperture failure problem after buying it and got worried for a while, however, in this forum there have been only one or two reported incidences. If you live in the US, the repair cost is not exorbitant, or you could do it yourself, there is a thread here saying how to fix the solenoid that causes the aperture failure.

After comparing the the K-S2 and the 80D in this site I think the K-S2 is better value for money, but they are cameras in different ranges. The 80D compares with the K-3.

If you want to stay with Pentax (please do!) but don't want to risk that aperture problem, try looking at an used K-5II, just recently there was one in the marketplace here that included two kit lenses (18-55 and 50-200) for just 50 usd more than the offer you found for the K-S2.

Anyway, I can totally recommend the K-S2, if the offer is a colored version, even better, those colors make the camera even more unique.

Congratulations!
I'm saving to get started in astrophotography and my first step will be a tracking mount.
Have you tried the K or M 28mm f/3.5? I have both and they are sharp even wide open!

Birds on Branch, BOB, a not so loved relative of Birds in Flight, BIF.

I find that this lens is a good perfomer, even wide open (though here it was stopped down for more DOF), makes me wonder if should get that Sigma 70-210 UC...
The picture was underexposed, but a light edit in darktable fixed it.

Btw, my identification skills aren't up there yet, so if anyone can help me identify this little fella I would be very thankful :)

Welcome!

I also use a K-S2, though mine is the desert beige version :). It's a really nice camera with functions that I continue to discover.

On an APS-C camera a ~50mm lens will perform really nice for portraits, I have the K 55 f1.8 and find it wonderful, the M 50 f1.7 is perhaps the most popular piece of vintage glass in the forum so it should be good as well, they can be had for real cheap if you look in the marketplace here or ebay :)

FA 28-105 (Power Zoom version) fungus infested

So, I decided to disassembly the lens. Everything ok, unscrewing a lot of small screws and being flabbergasted at the amount of components inside a lens (no wonder they're so expensive).
Thanks to the picture posted by Dave I had at least an idea of what to do (thank you!), however, I found myself stuck with some screws that won't come lose no matter how much force I apply, I believe they are glued with something. I did a search on the internet and people seem to agree that a change in temperature (cold or hot doesn't seem to matter) would help the glue come lose, has anyone had experience with that?

At any rate, the lens was very cheap, while I hope to be able to clean it, even if I don't I would have learned something.
For those that asked, I use a K-S2, I have some K and M primes but sometimes I want autofocus and metering info beyond the range of the 18-50 and I don't know if it was because of the rear element fungus or from the front element fungus, but pictures were lacking in sharpness, contrast and colors appeared washed out.

ps: I'll post some pics of the disassembly later.

Thanks! And yes, the lens is excellent and compact and manual lenses are better for panoramas. Next I'm planning for an HDR panorama :)

FA 28-105 (Power Zoom version) fungus infested

Hello!

Just today I bought a nice little combo for around 24$, a Pentax Z-20 (with battery included), a Sakar 75-300 for Pentaxx (has the Ricoh pin), a AF 400FTZ flash and the FA 28-105 power zoom, the seller threw in a Sigma 35-70 for Canon as well. Considering the difficulty of buying Pentax gear in my country I considered myself lucky, however, when I got home to recheck the equipment I found that the fungus infestation was far worse than I had thought.

So, as I really wanted to use the lens as an autofocus upgrade to my DA L 18-50 I wonder what can I do, is there a disassembling guide somewhere or is there some trick I can do? I tested it and the images don't come out well...

Thanks in advance to any who can help :)

Focus select in live view

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I use a K-S2 as well :)
I believe that by default the contrast autofocus is set to auto. To change it and do as you wish (select your focus point in live view) you should look into the third page of the picture menu, there is the live view option, press it and change "Contrast AF" to select (the small rectangle with four arrows around it). Now you should be able to long press the OK button to select your autofocus point, take note that a single press will just zoom the live view.

It's a bit cumbersome to change, but if you use this option frequently you can save it to one of the User slots on the mode dial.

A Pentax LX for 50$?

The craiglist equivalent of Venezuela, Mercadolibre, is full of nice (and cheap) surprises.
There's this guy that's selling the following:

Pentax LX (black)
Pentax A 135mm 2.8
Pentax A 28mm 2.8
Pentax M 50mm 1.7
Torex 49mm P.L ???

He's asking 50$ and is even willing to negotiate it...

Even though I already have lenses on those focal lengths I would run and buy it if it weren't on a different state or I wasn't so broke

Hello!

What you see there is a parrotlet of the forpus passerinus family.
Recently I've been photographing the many birds that roam the trees near my house, I don't have a longer lens and, frankly, I am very knew and unversed about post processing beyond adjusting the exposure slider and the color temperature in darktable. Any suggestions to improve the picture would be greatly appreciated! :)

ps: The photo is heavily cropped straight from the camera.
pss: I used flash.

Paleta, a stray dog we sheltered after she had an accident, there's a funny story behind her name.
This is one of the best pictures I've taken of her, with a K-S2 and a K 55mm f/1.8 stopped at 2.8.

The tree in the center is an Araguaney, Venezuela's national tree. This was shot in my first outing with my K-S2 and the kit 18-50mm lens, looking back I could have used iso 100 and [I]f[I]/8, but I still think it is a nice picture.

Hello!

Maybe this question has been asked before, though I didn't find a suitable answer in my search. I'm looking for a program that allows me to manage and tag my RAW files. I've given digikam a try but found it somewhat unfriendly. In short, a program that does the following things would be great:

1. Detects my camera (a K-S2) from a USB connection.
2. Copies the files to a specified folder in the computer.
3. Creates tags and ratings that my editing program (darktable) can read.

If it's free it would be even better :)
If you know any program that does those things in a simple way please let me know.

ps: This could be a question for a different thread, but is there a way to edit the exif info embedded in the pictures? I shoot mostly with K and M glass and sometimes I forget with which lens I took a picture :(

Hello from Venezuela!

Hi!

I've been lurking for a while, in fact, ever since I considered Pentax as a choice for my first DSLR. After much debating and searching and looking at my budget, the K-70 seemed perfect for me, sadly, when I added import costs it went beyond my budget, then I saw the K-S2.

Now I have the K-S2 in a wonderful desert beige color and I'm super happy, it has everything I wanted, weather seal, Wi-Fi, articulating screen and a nice viewfinder for nearsighted eyes. The only gripe is the grip, it's a bit small and my hands are somewhat big, but I'm getting over it.
Most other entry/enthusiast level DSLR come with plethora of accessories, not my K-S2. So I decided to look in the used marketplace of my country, there I found two "gangas" as we call them here. The first was a working KM with a SMC Pentax-M 28mm F3.5, a SMC Pentax 55mm F1.8 and a SMC Pentax-M 135mm F3.5 also included was a nice aluminium tripod and a Kako flash (that I still can't figure how to use); the second bargain was a working ME with a SMC Pentax 28mm F3.5 with a rubber Hoya hood and a SMC Pentax 135mm F3.5 with a (I think) Pentax hood, it also included five 49mm filters, an old light mete and a brAun flash. Each set included a bag, the two were less than 90$.
So, I'm happy with K-S2, lenses and film cameras :)
PD: The photo is the first ever photo I took with the K-S2 in full auto mode with the 18-50mm kit lens, kind of a memento!
PDD: Which of those lenses would be the best for astrophotography?
