So... anybody has 540II disassembled?

In the meantime I've got METZ58AF2.. lets hope that will survive longer. Just the menu is a bit slow to operate when compared to direct controls on AF540

You can see that black plastic screw running from motor pinion to the white plastic part. That is the zooming mechanism.

Adding photos from times when it used to work

In the meantime I found that the zooming mechanism is still the same... not a good news then.

I'll probably try some of larger METZ flashes instead.

Few days ago my AF540 FGZ mk I failed again, this time the zooming head rail is broken.

Does anybody have photos of mk II internal construction? Is it the same tragedy or did they manage to improve it?

Official K-1 monthly production

That is quite realistic. Considering the price of 645Z and that it probably never pays-back for its development, but was important as technology/brand demonstrator.

Btw check this: Pentax Serial Number Database - PentaxForums.com

K5 is very dominant, other models lagging. I believe that low-end users mostly do not care about pentaxforums, so cameras like K50, Kx, Kr, K200D, K100D were also quite successful.

K1/K1II production would reach something like 25-30k per year, 40k in peak. First two digits in serial number are year code or series code.

That is very low production rate, but corresponds to numbers of these cameras that can be seen in public.

Question is how profitable this is. Considering that development took over 5 years (all the HW development, SW development, testing, prototype builds etc. ) and then factory implementation (toolings, where even small plastic part tooling is around $20 000 at least each). Then squeeze some margin in it and still pay for manufacturing costs, materials etc. Risky bussiness.

Camera company needs to sell 200k+ per year or more like canikonsony to be profitable... but this probably was only reached by K5, K3 and low-ends.

Mine button was fixed 2 times within warranty and I have piece of transparent tape over it since that time just to be sure... after 2nd service it holds for about 8 years.. maybe they had bad batch of clips during production. I've not seen so many problems on K5II or K3 later.

You can get the older Tamron 70-200/2.8 or Sigma 70-200/2.8. Both are 1.2-1.3kg which is less than DFA*70-200/2.8 and both cost less and provide more light than DFA70-200/4.. and its rather difficult to beat 70-200/2.8 lens closed to F4 with wide open F4 lens..

Next will be PenTamron 35/1.4... wait for it.

And 150-600 would make sense. But not with Ricoh price add-on.

16 Mpix mostly does the job.. but when I'm shooting some planes or birds, then cropping option comes very handy (in case lens quality allows such thing).

After playing recently a lot with colleague's D850... hmm.. food makes you hungry :D

Some years ago people were saying that 6 Mpix is plenty enough and that 12 Mpix EOS 5D is only for hi-end lanscapes..
Now my 5 years old compact camera has 12 Mpix CMOS and my phablet has 16 Mpix :D

I'm pretty sure that next decade we will be talking about 100 Mpix FF cameras as standard or at least cameras with smaller sensor capable to do multi-frame-stack even in short time like 1/200s to gain huge resolution output.

Same with video.. my first compact camera had 320x240 30sec videos without audio and now we have tools for 8K capture...

The difference between Sig8-16 and DA12-24 is such, that when I stand in front of tall building that so-so fits my image frame at portrait orientation 12mm, I can perfectly fit the same building in 8mm landscape.
Also interiors are different. With 8mm I can take picture where with 12mm I had no room to step back.

But of course the image is more distorted. DA12-24/4 can use slim 77mm filters while Sig8-16 cannot. Sig8-16 has less CA/PF and delivers very detailed images.

Balance between these two might be the Sig10-20/3.5 which is also faster than both = better low-light work. Accepts filters too. And focusing motor is silent.

Oh sorry.. that is perfect example of unique technology demonstrator. The unit production price remains unknown, sure more than my whole house, and they produced less than handful of samples :)

Reminds me of Sigma 200-500/2.8, but it is at least possible to buy it .)

Fully agree with this. But lets make it 60-300/4-5.6 because nobody else has such lens and it will be more attractive for APS-C users too..

I'm sad about the 55-300 PLM. That was nice opportunity to do such step. Now they have several APS-C compact telephotos, but nothing for FF. Although DA55-300 is somewhat usable even on K1 with some vignetting, that can be cropped out.

Well.. it works on film too.. :)

Proof: DA55-300 on MZ-10 with some old expired agfa @ lot of sun during sunset.

Well if you have good 60mpix FF sensor output and you resize it to 24mpix.. you'll clean out a lot of noise. Also there is the advantage in image crops. Even if you cut the photo a lot, it retains a lot of details.

But yes, the hard-drive consumption is huge :D

Having some hypothetical HD-DFA*100-300/4 we'll be able to happily remove DFA150-450 and replace it with some DFA150-600 ;)

Btw. 100-300 attached on APS-C is the same as 150-450 on FF.. and F4 with 1.5TC results in same 150-450/6.3
Preferably in single barrel design where nothing extends when zooming. Like the one below, but with modern optic components and some strong silent ring ultrasonic motor :)
