Using a cable release and MLU on a K10D-procedure?

All of the procedures/settings you mentioned are my reasons for using a tripod, cable release and/or MLU! I want the best photo I can get and that means using a cable release to minimize vibration as well as mirror lock up for the same reasons! For an excellent tutorial explaining why use mirror lockup, go here:

I'm getting set to do some quality architectural shots with the K10D and 12-24mm/f4 and 16-45mm/f4 lenses using a cable release and mirror lock up. Anyone able to tell me the proper settings in the various menus to achieve this? I'm presuming Bulb mode and some obscure custom setting, but can't find it for sure. Either the manual or my brain seems extremely dense on the procedure. 8o)

New Pentax Camera?

If the firmware updates address the crappy AF of the K10D I'd be a happy camper! They can't come soon enough! The icing on the cake would be a 14mm/f2 or 18mm/f 2 or faster Limited lens, built like the old FA series (which I have all of!) with metal AND NOT a pancake lens! They'd make my day as a landscape/architectural shooter if they'd produce one of these and drop it on us with a price point UNDER $1100. Hopefully, far better than the disappointing new * series zooms! Just my 2 cents!

As an English major, I read the announcement as being about as bland and meaningless as plain yogurt. There is really NO solid information except a firm date to complete the merger and vague "assurances" that various Pentax divisions will continue to function and/or exist afterwards. If these two guys were politicians, I'd swear they were running for president with these kinds of announcements that aren't really announcing ANYTHING!
As jeffkrol pointed out, there is absolutely no meat to this at all. If it was a sandwich, I'd be asking, "Where's the beef?" What a masterpiece of political doublespeak!

For me, here's the bottom line vis-a-vis RiceHigh: First, he has an amazing ability to spew forth "facts" regarding the TECHNICAL aspects of (pick your favorite camera brand name here; he's trashed them all in one way or another!) equipment for the apparent purpose of continuing to get his 15 minutes of "fame". Maybe he's a masochist and gets off on pain!
Second, In the five years I've been aware of his presence on various forums (before sane people finally get so fed up with his negativism they band together and get him kicked off their forum!) I cannot recall ONE SINGLE INSTANT IN WHICH HE POSTED HIS PHOTOS FOR PEER REVIEW OUTSIDE OF USING TRASHY SHOTS TO DISS A GIVEN CAMERA MAKER!
Unless my (admittedly getting older) memory serves me wrongly, this is a PENTAX forum dedicated to photography, its techniques, and most importantly its results—PHOTOGRAPHS, not getting into arguments with a technophobe whose techniques are, at best, highly suspect and designed to create exactly the type of inflammatory rhetoric that this thread has turned into.
RiceHigh, I do not care if you respond to this or not, nor, frankly, do I care about your opinion. Until I see you consistently posting QUALITY PHOTOS to this forum using PENTAX equipment and lenses, I personally will continue to see your postings as worthless, useless and inflammatory, not informative, insightful and trustworthy. You have NO CREDIBILTY as far as I'm concerned, based on my five years of viewing your posts!

All I care about is whether or not Pentax delivers a true MF Digital camera body (i.e.; the 645D) AND a 12 Mp body to "update" the K10D to compete with Canikon!

According to one of the reps at PopFlash.Photo when I called to get pricing, it's available in mid-December of this year. Pricing will be around $1200, according to them.

Personally, I think the deafening "sound of silence" from Pentax to its pro users is an indicator that SOMETHING is up—and soon! At least, that's my hope! A 12mp upgrade of the K10D (K12D?) with speed and AF improvements would be SWEET and the release of the often-delayed 645D would be even sweeter! I'd drool all over myself and it'd have me down at the local bank on my knees begging for a loan to buy it with some of the new lenses!
("Honey? where's the cookie jar with that rainy day money you've been saving?") *o)

Mike Johnston over at T.O.P. is hinting of another "major announcement from a major manufacturer" within the next few days. Wonder if he means Sony, or maybe—Pentax? Benjikan has been VERY quiet the last couple of weeks and I remember him saying something exciting would be coming from Pentax this month.
So what gives Benjikan? Do we expect something exciting pretty soon from Pentax, or go on yawning and turning green with envy at the news from the canikon juggernaut? Heck, even OLYMPUS is giving us new, good stuff! A pro friend of mine who shoots Pentax says that Pentax PR has been VERY unresponsive of late; maybe that's because they're busy preparing press kits for something new? It would be nice to here from someone who has a REAL insider knowledge of what's going on!

Yeah, I think I read Mike's article a few weeks back while surfing for some other topics! It's good and to the point. A friend pointed out that Irwin Puts, the inestimable Leica expert, said recently that HE feels with 10mp and current techology any DSLR like the the K10D is in every way the equal to a medium format camera in it's capabilities, etc., so I'm comfortable using it. BTW, NICE gallery over on photo.net! When I get THAT good with my system, I will have "arrived"!

Thanks for the input! I'm actually in the process of designing a blog for all my photography (Now THAT will be a boring site!) 8o) and appreciate the ideas. You're ALL right about the equipment: I corresponded with a pro who doesn't post on this forum, but who uses a Pentax K10D and he said all the current equipment I have is more than sufficient for this project, so now it's on to the creative process! You will all be kept in the loop as it goes forward and I will certainly appreciate constant feedback as I move forward.
Thanks again for all the great feedback and/or creative ideas!

First paid photo shoot! What a rush!

Not trashing hs equipment at all! However, with what he had he could have and should have done better work! The first hand reports I got from a number of trustworthy people with no hidden agenda against him all said he simply had an "I don't give a hoot attitude" about the shoot and when several people commented to him his response was essentially "I'm just here to do the job and get my paycheck." Their reports uniformly said that over the three days he was there that the whole time he acted just plain bored and eager to get done. THAT is what I'm surprised at!
As for "us vs. them", heck YEAH I'm glad that Pentax "won" one! I don't trash anyone nor their equipment and am experienced enough to know that it's 95% the photographer and 5% the equipment and in this case, it showed! Bottom line: By sheer grace and a good attitude a Pentax photographer "got 'er done!"

Well, fellow Pentaxians, I need some help! As part of two advanced photography classes, I am starting a semester-long photo journalism project on forgotten corners of America similiar to this:
David Plowden - Small Town

The differences between me and David Plowden are that he shoots a Hasselblad, was trained by Minor White (no relation, darn it!) and has a national reputation, plus HIS work was mostly done without commentary. MY vision is to actually do an art book and publish it through our university's press in late November of this year, but to add little vignettes with my photos that tell a bit about the shot and what's going on in it, the location where it was shot, the person if it's a portrait, etc. This will combine my major in English Literature and my minor (but first love) in photography.
Here's where I need YOUR help: I don't have a medium format camera, can't afford to buy one, even used, nor the film for it, etc. although I believe that would be the format most suited for this project (as evidenced by Plowden's photos), SO.. I will be using a K10D digital to do my project. NOW to the "crunch" question: within the limitations posed by shooting in a 35mm APS-C format what lenses do I need to consider for this project? I have the 12-24mm/f4, 16-45mm/f4, 31mm FA Limited, 43mm FA Limited, 77mm FA Limited, 50-200 DA and several third party older lenses (135mm/f3.5 Takumar and Kiron 80-200/f2.5 1:4 Macro). Most of the shots will be wide to ultra-wide daylight shots, similiar to Plowden's, of architectural objects. Then, there will be objects and people. I anticipate virtually ALL the shots will be PPed in Photoshop CS3 to B & W and I can't think of what else you all need to know! Obviously, this will challenge my skills in numerous areas from lighting to composition to processing techniques.
So, if anyone has suggestions, ideas and/or samples or techniques to share about shooting this broad-ranging project, I'd LOVE to hear them! If there is enough interest from the membership and Mo, I'd love to regularly post ongoing photos as this progresses for your suggestions and to satisfy your curiousity!
Thanks in advance for any and all SERIOUS suggestions, especially from anyone who currently shoots architecture, small towns, etc.

*o) Hopefully, the former! I returned to college 3 years ago and am minoring in Photography (only because our university doesn't offer it as a major); majoring in English Literature. Somehow, when I graduate at age 59 (!) next year, I hope for a career combining my two loves.

Here's one done spontaneously that gives an indication of the atmosphere for the whole shoot- relaxed enjoyment! Only PP was size reduction for posting here and adding the purple border to the original shot at the customer's request (That's the school district's colors.)
This is the finance department of the central office and was part of a series for the website that WASN'T posted there. (A more somber shot was used.)

The local school district decided to do new photo ID badges for the employess and the HR Director happens to be my Dearly Beloved's boss! Combined with a landscape photo I'd done on New Year's day that she wanted for the background on the badge, I got tapped to do the job. Not exactly glamorous, but it was a paying job and I used the K10D with the 77mm Limited for all the shots (617!). It was a 3 week opportunity to perfect my portrait skills!
Well, that in itself wouldn't be anything to brag about EXCEPT..as I finished the first badges (which were VERY well received!), the high school principal had hired a pro company to come in and do yearbook pictures and had independently decided to have THEM run the ID badges for the high school staff and teachers.
When they were finished, the photos were very dark and exposure in many cases was terrible, not to mention posing (I posed EVERY SINGLE SHOT and did TWO of each employee). It was rather obvious that the "Pro" had simply viewed the assignment as just another day in the office. When I got an opportunity to do an EXIF on some of their shots, I found out they'd used a Canon 20D and 24-105L lens, and they had come in with a full studio package, including lights and background and the whole bit!
I did 5 test series for the high school and they fired the pros and hired me to take the photos instead! Here's what my "setup" was: Pentax K10D, 77mm FA Limited lens, Really Right Stuff Ballhead, Manfrotto 3001N Tripod, NO LIGHTS, north-facing window for natural light, white projector screen for a "background" and AV settings on the camera.
The Superintendent said afterwards that they were the best photos they'd ever had taken in the 20 years he'd been there! And I SUCK at portraits! (Well, in MY opinion!) So I wound up photographing every employee, doing the ID badges AND the yearbook photos AND am talking with a number of individual people about doing more work—all because a professional Canon shooter (he even used a professional software package that allowed him to download the files to a website [Shutterware] to be processed) looked on his assignment as just another paycheck and didn't get emotionally involved in his shoot.
I LOVE being a Pentaxian because WE CARE!

I don't know about him, but those are some dang serious specs on that D300! That said, though, Nikon STILL doesn't have fast primes and other glass that is as good as some of Pentax lenses! (Think ALL the Limiteds!) And let's face it, at least half the equation in good photography is the glass. If Pentax addresses some of its auto focus issues and makes some minor tweaks to the camera I think even the current K10D is a decent challenger to the D300 on a level playing field. Just my 2 cents, your mileage may vary!

I have a Really Right Stuff plate mounted on my K10D and it's been there for over 4 months with no problems. Several other cameras (and brands) I've owned in the past I have done the same without ever having any real issues. It's very handy when you get a situation where you want to take a good shot with a tripod, but you need to compose and take it quickly. Leave it on if it suits you!

I'm using the ones Paul (rprii) referenced above and have for 4 months without any problems. Bought them from Amazon and just recently did a photo ID shoot for our local school system, taking over 650 photos on ONE battery without re-charging it, so they work very well. Look around for their specials or check Amazon, though. I bought a 2 battery kit with charger and an added sensor cleaning kit for about $20 US!

Hardly likely! The DA * 50-135mm/2.8 lists for $999.95 at several sites and this lens is $200 cheaper. Unless Pentax dropped the price vs. the DA *16-50mm/2.8 ($899.95) it's not the one everyone (including me!) wants.
