New zoom 70-200 F4

How in the hell did this too often repeated topic invade a thread about the lens that I have been waiting far too long to see released? (Honestly Pentax I could have saved up for the damn F2.8 version by now.)

But since I've already stepped in the poop:

I have a mirrorless camera, its called a phone. They get better every year and fit in a pocket, why would anyone buy one the size of a brick?. A camera phone photo now a days is good enough to be usable on a website or even in a news story taken by some passer by (and often they are). They even have surprisingly decent video and sound pickup.
I would be worried that with the newest stuff like apples 3 lens cameras with actual optical zoom that it will begin to eat into APSC sales the same way they already erased little point and shoot digital cameras.

I have seriously considered whether in the future I will replace my Pentax FF with a Gopro or something the same way the FF replaced the last of my film stuff and my apsc camera in one swoop. I have far more use for a video camera for my kids and while scuba diving than a very very clunky still camera and lens that requires far more knowledge and skill on my part to get photos better than what my phone does with a single monkey paw button press.
I could see even more of the news and tabloid photographers switching to small high end video setups and just plucking choice frames out when stills are needed, never miss that one chance moment that way.

Dedicated still picture cameras are becoming more and more an art form than a practical thing. Its already at that point for me, I do it for fun when I have time.

The question is what will a mainly still camera be used for in another 10 years and what other technologies will cut into that, I would be curious to hear the views of Pentax on that topic.

But enough trailing off topic, when is my new lens coming out?

This may be a rural culture specific issue in this case.
As one who lives in rural Wisconsin I can tell you that the vast majority of people here, especially the farmers or more rural folk are ridiculously suspicious of anyone they don't know.
Where I grew up my graduating class had as many people as all the people at the local high school put together so they get used to knowing everybody here. I personally hate knowing everybody because they are always in your business and you are obligated to speak to them and inquire how their exciting country life is going when you see them or you are being rude and are shunned at the next county fair or 4H gathering.

I get along well with everybody but have absolutely nothing nice to say about them, I will just leave it at that.

Nature Bird and bokeh

I hope you don't mind me meddling with your image but I found it impossible to explain where I though it should be cropped.
I felt that the bokeh looked kinda like blobs of paint spilled onto a photo before but like this it appears as more of a background and highlights the in focus branches and bird better.

I think I would agree, the brightness is high enough that its just under the point where you start losing detail in the highlights.

You asked about the ice on the far shore being distracting, It sort of is, especially since its the only element of the picture that is super fisheye looking. Pulling the brightness down might reduce the water (clear ice?) glare which is a bit distracting too.

Really nice but there is so much detail that without color the human eye has some difficulty sorting it out, if you have access to that spot again try a much shallower depth of field to blur the far bank more and make the tree pop out better. The detail on the water should be in focus in front and recede into a blur in an attractive way as well then.
The lighting makes the branches shape show up nicely so try to reproduce that time of day and weather with a faster shutter speed and/or iso to allow the narrower depth of field.

If you took it from shore with a longer lens from father away it could be difficult to narrow the depth of field enough. You also would need a lens that doesn't suffer from really noisy bokeh to avoid just making everything a blurry mess.

Especially if the key chain is interesting getting the shot in portrait orientation and not cutting the top of the label or the bottom of the key chain off would probably work better.
It would be more interesting if it were the original ignition with the tractor brand on it with an attractive key chain. Pretty sure it overlaps the sticker and is blank because its a replacement.

Replacing my K-1........which do I get ?

The original poster came to what I feel was a good deciscion a month and a half ago when this thread was current, BUT, since its back up again...

Anyone trying to make the 1 vs 2 decision should really be either buying a cheap version 1 used now, or waiting until the replacement for the version 2 comes out and either buying a 2 on clearance at that time (how I got my version 1), or just buying the next FF body which I feel will have some very nice improvements learned from experience so far, especially in file handling capability (processing, usb speed, ect) that might make it worth the extra money.

Found another lens and added it to the list. Most of the stuff is coming with the K1000 now to avoid shipping killing the value of everything piecemeal and the 24-50 is discounted if you buy that with it. There is extra random stuff like filters and such for the lenses that will be included.

Any reason to keep a Pentax digital spotmeter when I only have a K-1 now?

I do full manual with the K-1 often, but it doesn't require any extra equipment to do so. Its actually faster and easier than the film cameras on their way out because everything is a quick finger or thumb flick on the dials including the film speed.

I like shifters too but unless you've been domesticated a shifter belongs on the floor and needs a minimum of four speeds.
What pisses me off is when I have a screen in the dash that wasn't optional that makes it take 10 minutes to turn the radio on and heater and AC controls that need 40 buttons and seperate zones for people sitting 3 feet apart, and sensors in the seats that remind me every 30 seconds that the stack of stuff on the passenger seat isn't belted in and so on and on and on. There's a reason a no option super economy car is 20k new now and a damn Jeep pickup costs 60k.
I drive a 90's 3/4 ton suburban by choice (though 88-93 would be better)

EDIT: Not worth bumping the thread but I sold the spotmeter to the person who bought my K1000 and all my other stuff locally. With a K1000 it will be much more useful to him as he is getting back into film photography. Also including the Ansel Adams 3 book set so he can make good use of it with the zone system if he wants.

Thanks for reminding me about my signature. I don't get online much anymore (no time for photography) and the K-5 with some lenses is long gone to a new user at a cheap price. Cleared out everything that from the signature that will soon be gone.

As far as previously using the spotmeter with my K-5 there were some situations with drastically different lighting in the same scene where I would spot meter a few places to try work out what could be pushed or pulled to get it all in a single exposure.
I was a little more careful with the film stuff since you couldn't instantly see what you just did and it was a little costly to bracket the hell out of anything questionable.
Now I am a lazy photographer. I usually shoot in P and just push settings around to get the motion or depth of field I want, but some days its little better than a point and shoot. I think it helps that the K-1 seems to be much smarter about metering a whole scene at once and not getting fooled by small parts.

I am selling off all my film stuff and that includes my Pentax digital spotmeter because I figure the K-1 already has a spotmeter function built in and I don't realistically see myself all that often taking the time to Ansel Adams a scene to bits with the meter before I shoot it even if it were somehow better.
Does that sound logical or is there some amazing need for the spotmeter that I am not thinking of. Considering the ridiculous price to buy a used one now (I can't believe they have gone even higher) and the fact that I don't intend to get anywhere near that for mine I won't be buying another one ever again.
I am reluctant to sell it mainly for the coolness factor of it, they are annoying to get a hold of now since it sorta has that inflated Ansel Adams cult status but I would rather have the money than a thing I don't use.

If they don't I will have to fix it, they are hosted on this forum not elsewhere but the system is working sorta crappy, the pictures are stuck as attachments between 2 different threads so it won't let me re upload them now.

SOLD LOCALLY

The darkroom sold locally to an Olympus camera user so the Pentax gear is now for sale by itself with shipping possible.
Now willing to sell the stuff somewhat separately.

I have a Pentax digital spotmeter without any accessories except the strap. (all that came with it when I bought it)

A brown body K1000 SE that was serviced before I got it.

Pentax A24-50 F4, A70-210F4
Pentax lens hoods for the 50 and 24-50 (70-210 is built in)
Tamron Adaptall 2 28mm F2.5 with PK m adapter lens caps and case.
Lens caps

AF280T flash with case and wide and telephoto adapter bits.

No scratches or other issues with anything that I know of but I was going to send the A24-50 to eric because the focus helical has very little dampening (moves too freely) for my preference though you might not care and I am told a regreasing with proper viscosity grease would fix that.

I would really like to sell this all to the same person so I can ship it in one box. I would make a much better deal on the whole lot.

Prices include shipping with insurance (which includes basic tracking last I checked) if you have packages stolen I can do signature confirmation on delivery. Lens caps and hoods are included with the lenses.
Pentax Digital Spotmeter: $175
K1000 SE, including A70-210F4, Tamron 28mm and AF280T flash with accessories and other random stuff with this for free. $75
A24-50 F4 $100 or $75 with camera.

$250 shipped for the whole lot or $150 shipped for everything but the spotmeter. I will wait a bit for someone to take all of it before I sell it piecemeal unless several people want to split it all up.
Edited as some stuff is getting sold separate now and I found another lens and other random crap I am throwing in.

Tesla charging stations have a super fast charge ability but only when talking to a registered Tesla vehicle thus the different plug. Tesla people are like mac computer people, you bought it because its a Tesla, not just because its an electric car.
Clearly the first station has been used and there probably isn't enough demand during that particular time of year in that spot for more than one person at a time to have needed away from home charging.

I would love to own one if I were rich. That said I drive a 90's 3/4 ton 4x4 chevy suburban which has the excellent feature, among many others, of its crumple zones being located in your vehicles instead of mine.

But back on topic I do like the way the photo is sort of a repeating pattern with about 50% less visible of the stations each time it repeats. Just a neat effect.

Who/Where is the best place to restore a SuperProgram?

Something else to note about Super Programs, I sent my first one to eric and he managed to get it working but said it was the early design and later super programs were totally different electronics wise, so even if you get a parts camera for your sentimental one it may not be the right one.

I have also had one super program that had been serviced very quickly start having shutter button half press issues because there is no great way to pull that assembly apart and clean the contact properly I would guess. Luckily I was able to get it working with the electronics cleaner and a pencil eraser trick.

I gave eric 2 Super Programs for parts (one failed totally a year after servicing) that had failed and the last one he fixed for me I have since sold.
I do love that camera since I spent so much time with it back in the day but eventually I switched to an MX and then got out of film entirely.

I do expect more FF lenses next year myself, and I would assume that will be a large part of the FF focus. I actually plan to buy the 70-200 F4 when it comes out rather than the current F2.8 as I am now doubly broke and I need a decent lens to pair with the 24-70.
I can't guess on the potential for a new high end FF body next year or maybe they plan to add a 2nd tier of FF bodies to the lineup.
I guess it would depend on whether or not the K-1 II was meant to be a short term minor upgrade or was all we get because incorporating a whole new sensor or something in the next generation is taking longer than expected.

Either way it will be a $2k plus body more than likely for all of next year at least and I have neither that much money nor that much patience and thus my decision to go K-1. I would assume the K-1 II might get clearanced out around this time next year for a similar price but I am done waiting.

OK, I decided I couldn't pass on this sale this time around after I missed it by debating it too long the first time around. I didn't expect there were any new K-1's left for them to sell.
A K-1 bundle is on the way from Adorama along with a sandisk extreme pro 128gb card.
I decided $400 was just too big a price jump to go to the discounted K-1 II, its almost a 25% bump. I am guessing since I am moving up from an original K-5 I will never notice the difference between the two.
Good I bought a DFA 24-70F2.8 last time they went on sale for under $1000 so at least I have a lens worth the quality of the K-1.

I've been waiting on this camera since I was still shooting with a Super Program and the IstD first was announced.
I think its been long enough already.

Cool thanks for the info.
Now I am waffling even worse however. Syrup will soon be coming out of my ears.

The real question then would be is the sale price on the K-1 II the better deal feature wise compared to the super sale (assuming I catch it) on the original.

And was there any hints on a new FF to replace it next year either by estimated schedule or rumor?
