Poll: Why did you go full frame?

I should add that I did not really "go full frame" so much as "go full K-1."

Yes, the better high-ISO performance and wider-angle FoV were my top "advantages of FF." And the shallower DoF is nice (but not essential.) However, the K-1 was much more than just an FF version of the K-5 that I had at the time. The K-1 also added the function dial and setting dial, stilty-tilty display panel, interval composite, GPS, pixel shift, astrotracer, more megapixels, better AF, and second SD card slot. The K-1 was just a lot more camera in addition to having a lot more sensor area.

Finally, and as others have said, the crop mode of the K-1 basically meant the K-1 had a K-5 built into it. So I wasn't even losing the reach and frame-rate advantages of an APS-C format camera.

645D still good for landscapes in 2020?

Whatever you buy, a 645D or a 645Z, these cameras are wonderful landscape instruments. Here are a few examples to encourage you acquiring one of those. BTW, I always use ISO 100 and shoot @ f/11, I use a tripod whenever I'm able to.

Other: I already had lots of full frame lenses, and I wanted to exploit their full image circle.

I'm pretty sure that is the answer you will get from most Pentaxians.

Maybe it is even more than this. Maybe Ricoh anticipated very early that the sales in digital cameras will massively shrink eg due to smartphones. So, instead of going to the rat race, where they will always lag behind, they focus (or try to focus) on long-living, high-quality products which are appealing to a smaller part of the photographing community.

It would be nice to know if there was anticipating market wisdom in Ricoh's decisions or if it was just shortage of money. At least, speaking as a biologist, in this shrinking habitat they already have their niche and I think they are well protected in it.

Why settle for 80% of a K-3? Get a K-3. There are some affordable(ish) ones around if you look around.

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/801977853-USE/pentax_15530_k_3_dslr_camera_body.html

They should get even more affordable once the K-new is launched, if you are prepared to wait.

The easiest solution of all would be to use the K-1 more. It's bigger and heavier than the crop sensor bodies, but one must be prepared to suffer for one's art. :D

Mine still gets used with M42 lenses attached - I can't get rid of it because it was the first digital camera I owned that made me think "this is what a camera should be like"
For 90% of the photos I take I could just as easily swap the K7 with my K3 and not really notice any difference.

Sadie Cove Sunset, Alaska, 2018. Deeper into sunset and from the same location as the previous photo. Pentax 645z, DFA 55 at f/8 and 1/160.

This is one of those scenes where you use the biggest camera you have. I wish I’d also made this on large format (didn’t have it on this trip). If I hadn’t had the 645z, I’d have used my Canon. No DSLR? It would be on my phone. No phone? I’d be drawing it in the sand, using my own blood for the color if necessary. (Can you tell I’ve been rereading my Ed Abbey library lately?)

I have a K1000 with a 55mm lens on it. It’s simple, no fancy bits Andes what it says on the tin..... I’m still trying to work out why I might need lots of gadgets, lenses and more than one camera? I use a couple of filters and have produced some cracking images.

Buy a used P6x7 or 67 or 67II and shoot b&w film for the next 25 years, still will be cheaper and the 6x7/67/67II will never be obsolete.

"Why We Shoot Film" - cool mini doco about film photography resurgence

I gotta disagree with you, my friend, at least when it comes to equipment. I found an old issue of Pop Photography from '82 and used one of those handy-dandy inflation calculators. Back then you could mail-order a Pentax MX body for $140 -- equivalent of $370 now. Today you can buy one and get it CLA'd for less than $200. Nikon FE -- $235 then, equivalent of $620, today they're <$100 on eBay. A Pentax LX was $440, $1200 to us. Today you can get one for $250.

OK, film is more expensive - Tri-X was the equivalent of $5 a roll and 100' of Ilford HP-5 was the equivalent of $40. Granted those are mail-order prices. They're a couple-few bucks more today. Slide processing, adjusted for inflation, $8 for a roll, today my local wants $11. More, but not a whole lot more.

I kind of feel like we're living in the golden age. Today I can afford cameras and lenses I could only dream of back then, and the consumables costs are only a little higher. Best yet, with a $200 scanner I can easily view and crop my photos without spending big bucks on photo paper and darkroom rental.

Compare it to digital... Sony a6000 with a lens costs about a grand. For that you can buy a good, advanced-amateur-to-pro-level 35mm SLR, get it serviced, and have enough $$ left over to shoot and process a roll of film a week for a year or more. And in five years, when the Sony is obsolete and possibly broken and in need of another $1000 replacement, your film camera will still be in perfect working order.

I know that there've been a fair number of younger shooters popping up in this PentaxForums corner and I'm genuinely curious how many around here now did not grow up with or shoot film initially but began on digital. I'm a verified gen-x "bridge" shooter I guess, with equal memory and experience in both really but I know there's a wide swath of demographics here.

This is a well done and nicely produced little piece from NBC Left Field... quite a few familiar faces to me in it. Covers the film "trend" over the past decade pretty interestingly. I'd certainly say this is not the fad (at least overall, though there certainly are fads within photography in general, irrespective of film or digital as it's always been) that so many have called it over the same past decade. Thoughts?
