As February nears its end, and CP+ approaches, I'm giving this thread one last bump, to see if anyone else would like to share their twelve favorites of 2017. I so much prefer to see pics than read the bickering in rumors threads... :o

K-1 Mark II!

Does anyone have a reliable source for this oft-repeated statement?

Not being critical, I'd really like to know if/when someone official (or even a trustworthy "in the know" source) said anything about EOLing the 36MP sensor. The IMX094 (which is likely the K-1 sensor) is still listed as an available product on Sony's sensor products page. There's no 42MP FF sensor on that page, and there's also been mumblings about Sony possibly keeping its best sensors for itself... I do hope the K-1 Mark II comes with a 42MP sensor, but reading the tea leaves, it seems a little unlikely from over here...

Personally, I think if you stay with the same image format (APS-C), you can't just compare bodies, weight-wise, to see how much weight you'd save by going from Pentax to another brand. The lenses for the other brand will often be as heavy or even heavier than the Pentax equivalents, except for some corner cases (like people shooting with just a single prime near the registration distance of the lens mount they pick). You really need to compare for your specific use-case to see how things turn out. For example, you need a ~100mm 1:1 macro in your kit? In E-mount: Sony 90mm is 602g, Sigma 105mm is 726g and Samyang 100mm is 730g. The D-FA 100mm WR? 340g! That weight difference (262-290g) is about the same as the difference between a K-70 and an a6300 (284g). BTW, the trend in mirrorless has been towards heavier and heavier bodies, at least at the high end (a6000 < a6300 < a6500; X-T1 < X-T2 < X-H1; E-M5 < E-M1 < E-M1ii). Of course, there might be other reasons than weight to switch...

Nevertheless, I think for really significant weight savings, you need to go down a step in image format (APS-C -> m4/3s). But again check your particular use-case, including all lenses. Sometimes the existence of a particular lens might swing things one way or another...

BTW, looking at this list of available Sony sensors (*), I don't see why people are saying that a new APS-C camera is gated by new sensor availability. I assume IMX193 is the sensor in the K-3, with 8.7fps max frame rate. And there is the IMX271, a newer 24MP sensor but with 19fps performance already available. Presumably that's the sensor in cameras like the A6300 and A6500. Possibly, for reasons other than sensor availability, Ricoh have decided to not release a camera based on this sensor, but rather wait for the next iteration (or later, to use the language of the lens roadmap)...

(*) I forget who posted this link first a couple of days ago, sorry.

Funny guy! Stating you are expecting a "minor" update and then describing a camera with newer everything - sensor, processor, card slots, USB, touch screen, etc. Yeah, that's totally minor.

Reading the smoke signals, I think even a new sensor is looking less and less likely...

Just your opinion, but must. you. repeat. it. 75. times? The last two pages of your posting history seem to be nothing but that single song. Maybe you could take a few days to go shooting and then put up a photo in one of the photo sections? I doubt anyone reading these forums is unaware of your unhappiness by now.

The only KAF4 lens so far is the 55-300 PLM. The 150-450 is NOT a KAF4 lens. The new 50 will almost certainly be KAF4. Bodies not compatible with KAF4 will physically mount and focus a KAF4 lens but won't be able to control its aperture and so will only shoot the lens wide open. KAF4 lenses don't have a physical aperture lever.

If you've reached a breaking point, that's fine, but the quote above seems quite mistaken and misleading. Based on what little info/rumors we have, Ricoh do plan on a higher-level APS-C successor - it's just still rather far away. Far away just means beyond what people like distributors/resellers/ambassadors have visibility into, AFAICT. So your statement above is incorrect.

In Canada, the K-70 also seems to have some deals right now, with the K-70 plus 18-135mm going for under $CDN1,000, and also some deals on K-70 plus 18-55mm WR for almost the same price as the body by itself...

Don't forget the top LCD (or GPS for K-3 II owners). For me, going K-3 -> KP would be a weird "side-grade", not a true upgrade, IMHO. Thus the song I linked to above about the statement that a K-3 successor might still be pretty far away: "Don't bring me down".

The worst, IMHO, is not so much about what's there or what's changed, but what didn't change. By now I would have hoped a camera at the K-70's level would have inherited the K-3's AF module and the top level APS-C camera would have something newer. I don't need D500 level AF, and AF is actually fairly low in my priorities list, but still... By now I would have hoped that video specs would at least have moved a little - like 1080p @ 60fps. Again, I don't mind that video not be a top priority, but it shouldn't be at a standstill for years and years, spec-wise. And I agree that offering less buffer and FPS in the KP than what's in the K-3 makes no sense (especially if you're not planning for a K-3 successor quickly). It's not like the people for whom fps & buffer are important will buy a K-1 instead - it doesn't even match the K-3's fps shooting 15MP APS-C frames.

My K-3 recently hit 50k shutter actuations. I could buy a new body right about now, though it's perhaps not a bad thing that I not spend a thing on a new body and just keep shooting my K-3... But no current Pentax body offers me a very significant upgrade, IMHO. The K-70, the KP and even the K-1 all have a definite appeal, but none is as clear a winner against the competition as the K-3 was when I purchased it. And each one of those bodies has significant drawbacks vrs the K-3 or K-3 II. In fact, if I buy a new (or new to me) Pentax body soon, it's most likely to be a K-3 II. But I picked the K-3 above the X-T1 (amongst others), now looking at K-3 II vrs X-T20 or X-T2, it's a very significantly different equation. Things have moved a ton in m4/3s too. And in Sony land.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't still pick Pentax. But I wish they weren't moving at what seems like less than half the pace of the rest of the field...

Sorry for ranting a bit. Maybe the K-1 Mark II will be a pleasant surprise...

You Tube

At least locally the KP has come down in price now to the same level as the K-3 II, which makes it a bit more appealing, IMHO. But if there's really no K-3 III on the horizon, then let's really hope the K-1 Mark II brings a lot more than a firmware update to the table...

I just hope that the K-1 Mark II - if it materializes soon - isn't just a K-1 with (significantly) updated firmware, possibly with some cosmetic body changes thrown in. That would explain why some usually well-informed people here on PF were saying "New firmware on the way!" while others were saying "No new bodies for a while", but would make the announcement a little anticlimactic.

Pentax Binocular Deal

That's a really good price! FWIW, on binocular forums, many people seem to prefer the 6.5s to the 8.5s - brighter image and easier to hold steady. Owning a pair of these has made it much more interesting for my wife to accompany me on macro photo outings, and how she has more or less become my spotter. :o

Alright, if anyone actually has specs to leak, please create a new thread? I am leaving the people coaching from the rafters and the armchair quarterbacks, the bitter former brand lovers and the more regular trolls, the few rational brand defenders as well as the cheese mafia to do their things here. Not seeing a deal from over here...?

BTW, these binoculars are awesome (and unique) for their close focus abilities. They are the binocular equivalent of a macro lens, and fantastic to observe butterflies and insects. (I, well, ahem, my wife has the 6.5x21, FWIW.)

Thank you!! :o It was shot with the D-FA 100mm WR, the HD 1.4X tele-converter and a Raynox MSN-202 diopter. Plus flash, of course. It's a pretty deep focus stack too. I'd probably not pick it as my best ever flake image though - that honor would likely go to either this one or that one from last year. I think what I most need to work on now is my flake selection process - I'm shooting too much and it makes the post-processing exhausting. I might try to use my wife's Pentax Papilio binoculars to get a better idea of what I'm shooting before I actually shoot it...

What tripod do you use for travel?

I have the Sirui T-025X, a carbon fiber tripod coming in at under 900g with the head. I find the last leg sections pretty flimsy, and the column can't telescope down into the legs (though you can remove it entirely). It was OK to work with the K-01 and a smallish lens in calm conditions. The head tends to seize up in really cold conditions and the knob on it is pretty small, giving you not much leverage on it. It doesn't go very high either, but if you can work sitting down and have a fairly light kit, it should work OK.

Personally, I upgraded to an Oben CT-3561 (with BE-117T head). I believe Oben is B&H's in-house tripod brand. This tripod & head combo comes in at about 1.4kg. It is much, much sturdier than the Sirui and the head is, IMHO, much, much nicer. A much better tripod for the K-3. It's still reasonably light, but the weight difference is quite noticeable. Now that I hope to be doing some bike touring in the next years, I am considering finding something in the middle of those two - maybe the Oben CT-3531 (with BE-108T head), which should be about 1.1kg...

I don't think there's much point arguing about what kind of new body Ricoh should or shouldn't do at this stage. If a new body is indeed around the corner, the decisions about its specs and price-point were made a looong time ago. We can only wait and see what they will announce to get information about what direction they are headed in. Personally, I'm much more interested in a K-3 III, but if the "K-1 Super" has good crop performance (read better FPS & buffer than K-3, with at least 18MP cropped frames) as well as much improved video specs, I'll certainly consider it. But it's likely to be both too expensive and too heavy for my taste...

K-S2 vs K70

No firsthand experience here - I'm on a K-3 - but if you need more temptation, you should know that the upgrade would also get you pixelshift, 14-bit RAWs & bulb timer... :o Personally, if I were in the market for a body and had to choose between K-S2 and K-70, there would be no contest. That being said, if I were itching to upgrade from a K-S2, I'd probably go for a K-3 II instead. Just my $0.02.
