60kms to the top of Mt Buffalo (as the crow flies - although I suspect no crows will be flying that way anytime soon)
104 kms as the cars go. - and ditto on the lack of going soon.
The fire causing concern is on the NW side of the mountain (the side nearest me, which means it is about 50kms away, but heading in a different direction. - there is a lot of open country between the fire and me with lots more chance of controlling it, even it it changed direction. Smoke is our biggest concern; there is so much around that even when the wind changes we still get smoke that we saw a few days ago returning.

Mmmm...
There has been the odd flare up.
There is fire on the west side of Mt Buffalo, threatened the Buffalo Valley and residents there have been warned they might have to move out.
There is only one other spot in the North East that is at Watch and Act level. But weeks of being alert for everyone in the area still.
In East Gippsland there are a couple of trouble spots but mostly just the need for being alert.
Victoria has some worthwhile rain yesterday in spots, but nowhere near the fires.
I haven't spoken to my friends at Carboor Upper (look that one up) for a day or two, but she has gone back to work and he is probably still driving around on a bulldozer or perhaps in his slip-on watering the perimeters.

Walt, you escaped just in time to avoid one of our worst fire seasons. (Definitely not the worst, but one of them.)
I'm pretty safe here, but only about 50kms from the closest one; the smoke has been pretty constant - bad for those with asthma and other respiratory problems.
We might end up with our 19th inquiry into bushfires since 1939 - I wonder if this one will make any difference.
Perhaps we should just re-read the previous 18.

By the number plate, it is only in the last few years when you visited.
Wicked Campers have now been banned in some States due to some of the dreadful artwork and text.
(Perhaps more correctly, their vehicles have been banned unless appropriately painted).

The last van I saw with a message on the back was a private vehicle, at least 1200 kms from home, warning that it was a manual tranny and prone to rolling backwards!!

Hi Noel. I like your image. I thought it must be a scan, but the EXIF says not. A very dirty sensor?

Yes Des, smoke is thick. Even with doors and windows closed it gets into the house. My daughter works in the aged and community care section at the council. She has a five minute walk from where she parks to the office and is equipped with a face mask supplied by the council. Her section has spent hundreds of hours on the phone making sure clients are ok. - particularly the rural clients.

Thanks Des. You are absolutely right.
I confirmed the info on australianwaterfalls.com by searching on Stoney Creek and Apollo Bay.
I took some pics along Stoney Creek at Lorne on the same trip - someone lacked imagination when naming creeks along GOR.
I am amazed that such a waterfall runs water under GOR via just a culvert and without any signage. (I just 'walked' down GOR via Google Earth Street View, and there is certainly no signage.

I have just had a look at the governments emergency website and the area at my friend's place has been downgraded to "Advice".
The website's levels of panic are 1. Evacuation 2. Emergency Warning 3. Watch & Act and 4. Advice.
This is the advice posted an hour ago;

"There are still fires that will continue to burn for the coming weeks.
We would like to thank the community for their attention to the warnings issued, Friday 10 January 2020. While conditions did reach anticipated levels for this spike day, the work completed by crews leading into this period and the use of helicopters, firefighting aircraft and crews on the ground meant we were able to act quickly on any break-outs.
Over the next few days, weather conditions look to be favourable and firefighters will continue to work in the area, and where possible, perform back-burning which may increase smoke.
An Emergency Warning will be issued if the risk to communities increases."

All the other areas in the high country around here are now down to Watch and Act, and things should improve for a few days, until the next wind storm and 40C temprtatures often coupled with dry lightning strikes. Further south in East Gippsland where most of the damage and loss has been, all the areas are down to Advice.

New South Wales, I'm not so sure about.

While my friend has been working in his Country Fire Authority workgear, I have been doing a couple of jigsaws that I received for Christmas.
The second one (attached) is actually a bit of the south end of Wangaratta, with my house slap-bang in the centre. (The middle one of three in the centre.)
I haven't had time to use a K-3, even if I had one.

Thanks for the thought Bob. We could do with some.
Actually it would be quicker for our northern cousins to send some; half a metre in the last 24 hours at the top end. - beats your 6 inches!

We are having a cooler spell here at the moment with a bit of moisture over some of the fire ground.
A friend of mine who's property (50 kilometres out of Wangaratta on back roads mostly) backs on to a pine plantation had some sleep last night - first decent nap for a week and a half.
Last Sunday he thought he would lose his house - sent his wife into town for safety while he dozed containment lines and put out spot fires, etc.
She went back on Monday to feed him and do what wives do. (If your house is going to burn, at least it should be clean first!!) Oh, and she has been watering heavily around the house too).
His grapes will be ruined by smoke, I don't know what he has done with his cattle.

It has certainly been a bad start to the fire season, not the worst by any means, but bad.

I haven't heard the term 'new potatoes' for ages.
When I was a kid, we had potatoes (usually sold still with dirt adhering) which had real skin wot we had to peel off.
When new season potatoes came into the shops they were washed and mum used to scrap the skin rather than peel it. The skin seemed to be thinner/lighter.

These days we never see "new' potatoes advertised.
Why? my surmising only - that would imply other potatoes were old/past their best.

Potatoes as sold either 'brushed', this is still dirty, or washed (for which you pay a premium.)
Smaller potatoes are sometimes called chats.
