This image was taken by a friend who asked my opinion. There is something strange that I cannot describe. It looks almost HDR but is not. It has an unreal look to it.
Would appreciate any opinion.

A Senior's Question

I would like all forum members to know that I never expected such a response to my question. There are many excellent responses, which made my decision easier.

Regarding type of camera: will keep the k-5 for a while and then upgrade to K-5IIs or K-3. Also will look for a smaller camera to have with me when Iím on regular activities.

Regarding photo taking techniques: will be looking for some online tutorials, memorize B. Petersonís Understanding Exposure, and go on some excursions with the primary objective of taking photos in varying conditions.

Regarding Photo Processing: will shoot RAW + JPEG and use the JPEG out of camera for image selection, etc.. Do research to determine best camera settings for JPEG. RAW will be stored for future use. Will continue to use Silky Pix Developer Pro for RAW conversion whenever the urge or need arises. At some point in time will look at Photo Editors such as Lightroom, Pixelmator (I have a MAC), Elements etc..

To conclude, both the taking of, and the processing/editing of, the photos are important; but the first one is essential; therefore I will concentrate on my photo taking techniques. Then, if I have some worthwhile images, I can break out the RAW file and give post processing a go.

Finally, Iím leaving this keyboard to go out and take some photos, and invite all of you to do the same.

Again, I thank you all very much, and regards,
Earl

A Senior's Question

I am a senior with limited experience in photography and would like to take advantage of these years left to leave a few images of interest to my family and friends. I have a question which is not easy to answer, but I must throw it out there in hopes the answers will guide me.

Introduction: I assume if one is very capable of taking images, then processing could be simple; on the other if one is very capable in processing, the image as taken is less important.

Question is: Assuming I have one year to get my act together; should I dedicate my time to improve my capability in camera usage in order to obtain the best image possible, or use this time to learn processing of images that I take. I donít think I am capable of doing both at an acceptable level since I am now 78.

Any input is welcome.

Regards,
Earl

Thanks to TaoMass and Kenntak for the comments. You are right about the crop. It was done to eliminate background as much as possible, and left no room in front of the face. I do not have post processor with levels yet since I am just doing raw conversion so far. The positive part is the subject choice seems to be all right. Looks like I have to start shooting more open, f1.8 to 2.0, in street scenes.

Hi:

Again thanks for your reply and three alternatives. Since I am planning to do a experiments with selected Raw files I need to set up an easy way to return to a specific developement setting. I will try all three to see which suits the task.

Earl

Hi:
Thanks for replying. I'm using Silky Pix again and don't have any great problems but do have several questions. I have tried the Silky Pix forum but there is very little activity there. I would like to put forth some questions and exchange ideas if you are willing. The first question (doubt) I have is the following: I process a Raw file using Taste Portrait for example and save it normally. I end up with The original Raw File, the processed JPEG file and the .spd document file. I process the same Raw file using another Taste and save it (rename automatically). I end up with the original Raw file, the processed second JPEG file and the .spd document file. The first .spd document file no long exists. Therefore I loose all the developement settings for the first JPEG file. Does Version 6 have some way to save the .spd document file for each JPEG file automatically?

I just returned to Silky Pix Developer Pro with the latest version 6. It is a big improvement but I still have some doubts. Anyone out there using Silky Pix Developer Pro Version 5 or 6? Would like to exchange ideas.

Hello Paul:

I thank you for your advice and the fact that you took the time to pass it on to me. I am very much an amateur and am enjoying the trials and tribulations of trying to take an image of what we see. I also did the paperboy routes many years ago so can appreciate your efforts.
You mentioned that you have done some excursions for whales. Could you tell me where? I have been to Ecuador and Madagascar and would like to try some more places. I live in Madrid and have traveled around Arizona, where we, my wife and I, almost bought a old house in Prescott.
Again, thanks for the advice,

Hasta la vista,
Earl Bauer

You are right but I would rather be in Fells Point with dozen or so Blue Hardshells in front of me. But since I live in Madrid my Nephew will have go for me while he takes in an Orioles game. If something worthwhile comes out I will post it.

I was shooting in Raw and used continuous shooting. I used manual pre-set focus and Neg EV to help prevent blowouts in such a changing environment. Those small boats do move around and it looks like higher shutter speed was required for sharper images. I have not done any PP yet since I have over 1000 images to go through. Hope a couple will be a worthwhile document of the great experience. I thank all for their comments and tips.

Don't have a K-3 yet, K-5 still does the job. Maybe some of these intermittent problems are the result of a capacitor not functioning properly every time.

The K-5 has 4 JPEG's for recording on SD card (16,10,6 & 2 M) plus a "small one" for replay on the LCD. My question is: How many pixels is it? Thanks for reply.

K-5 II and K-5 IIs Pricing
Posted By merengue

I am a happy K-5 user and might change to the newer version, but I am confused. The K-5 IIs costs more than the K-5 II and the only difference is it has less hardware, a filter. This is a case of where you can pay more for less. If there is a risk for moirť, than one should pay less. If the K-5 IIs has no risk, why produce the K-5 II with a lower price? I know there is no logical answer but a little conversation might be interesting.
