The middle one shows more texture in the white areas. Definitely better.

Now if Adobe could build that into LR....

What noise reduction do you use with your K3?

This is true. You can get quite good results with LR but the settings are pretty critical.

There are some LR tutorials on both sharpening and noise reduction, before I watched them I didn't know that if you hold down ALT whilst adjusting the parameters, the display of the shot changes in various ways to assist with optimum settings.

eg: sharpening/masking it shows the mask so you can more accurately apply sharpening only to edges and not textures (noise)

With uncropped K3 files I've found that I get a better result by applying less reduction than I would to a K5 file. The noise "grains" are smaller, so they aren't as visible, so NR to the same degree as a k5 file when viewed at normal size looks over-processed.

a gent on DPR (username Conjure) suggested a couple of nifty things:

Conjure wrote:

There are enough sensors inside the K-3 to trigger the shutter:

1.) optical sensors: e.g. for lightnings

2.) microphone: balloon popping, a cork, a light bulb breaking

3.) SR and Electronic Level: camera movements (or take a picture when movement stops)

K-3 delay when using the flash

This quote descrbes perfectly what I also see on my K3:
"Say you were to press the shutter in one clean movement - press down and let go.. In auto-mode, the flash fires just as you let go... in manual mode, the flash fires as you press down. That's how inperceivable the lag can be if you don't have anything to compare against."
My k5's flash fires as I press down.

I don't think it would trouble me, but it would be nice if the delay disappeared in a fw upgrade :)

The only downfall to boosting shadows with the K5, is that if there is any PF on the boundary of the light and dark areas, it will a bit hard to handle

Your True Story?

My story is that since forever, I've liked taking photos inside and in darkish places without the disruption flash causes.

In the film days I would always be submitting films for development with little notes attached: Please note: this film exposed at ASA1600, please process accordingly :)

For me, the amount of noise in a shot is very much secondary to capturing a special expression on a face, or that scissor leg jump the guitarist in the band just did, etc.

That doesn't mean that there's no noise in my shots, it just means that the noise that IS there doesn't interfere with the picture.

When the K5 came along, pretty much any concern I had for noise just went away, I had enough "noise headroom" to allow me to bump shutter speeds to what I wouldn't have even considered, which bumped up my keeper rate.

The flip side of the same coin is how much you can lift shadows without penalty when shooting at ISO 80 outside. Shots that would be impossible without blowing highlights can be achieved without bracketing by deliberately underexposing a couple of stops and lifting shadows in pp.

Just a little caution on that though, watch out for PF, it can get a bit out of hand of you go too far.

Out of all the K series DSLRs I've had the K5 is the one that has changed my expectations and shooting methods, and upped my % of keepers the most.

How bad is to change lens while K5's power is on

Through the K10, k20,k7 and k5 I almost never switch the camera off. I shoot mostly with primes, so I change lenses A LOT, and have never had any problem.

However with old non -A lenses, it's quicker to turn off and on to register the FL for SR than to do it thru the menu system.

Effectiveness of SR in K-5 vs. K-7

Well I'll leave the number crunching to others, but the other night was adjusting AF for my F*300 lens. I was focussing about 20 ft away indoors, and ALL my shots were sharp enough to judge FF/ BF. I was a bit shocked when I looked at the shutter speed and found I'd been shooting at 1/8th.

And no, I'm not one of the freakishly steady handed people either :)

Give it a try and report back,

I just did a quick and dirty test with my k20D and an M50/1.7, same gear as above.

I took a series of shots at 1 stop intervals from f1.7 up to f22.

The histogram only showed minor differences up to f11, at f16 and f22 it exposed at the same shutter speed as at f11.

I also tried the same with an A28/2.8, and stopped down using the diaphragm ring, results were fine up to f11, but underexposed a little at f16 amd f22.
