What to take to BC?

+1. Those would be my choices too. But I think you might want to trade the 55-300 for a 55-300 WR before you go. If you're going to be in southwestern BC, you can expect rain any time of the year.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of those lenses yet :P My travel kit would be my 18-135 WR + I would buy a SMC DA 15 for the trip. But with just those four you have wide to tele, WR, macro, and portrait capabilities... very versatile.

What's the best solution you all have found for *small* lens pouches? The neoprene ones off eBay are way too big for typical Pentax primes, teleconverters etc. I like the sock idea, but would prefer something lint free.

Will a Vintage focusing screen work on DSLR?

I did some reading on this topic recently (I have some older film bodies lying around) and the general answer I came up with was yes, it could probably be made to work (cut down to size and shimmed), but you might lose some metering accuracy, particularly with spot metering.

But hopefully someone who's actually done it will chime in.

Are there any hoods on the market for the 50-135 that are cheaper than the Pentax?

I bought a screw in metal 67mm "telephoto" hood off eBay for 5 or 6 bucks that seems to work well. It is nowhere near as intimidating as the Pentax hood if you're taking any candid shots. On the minus side it doesn't provide quite as much coverage as the OEM hood (though I'm not sure you could detect that in photos) and may not protect the lens quite as well from drops (might be too strong).

Chuck, my condolences. Sounds like she had a good run.

Stavri, that 8 element Super Tak is good for pet portraits, isn't it. Here's one of Tika a couple of months back on the one year anniversary of her adopting me. :) Also with that lens.

First Experience with a Manual lens (K-30 and Sigma Mini Wide II)

My Mini-Wide II is an 'A' lens. So you set the aperture dial to 'A' and forget about it... let the body set the aperture. You can treat it exactly like a modern lens - all modes work. All you have to do is focus manually.

With the lens off the camera, when you adjust the aperture ring, does the aperture open and close properly? With the ring at 'A', the aperture should be wide open, and you should be able to close the blades by moving the aperture lever with your finger.

Is the face of the lens mount clean, so that the body pins make good electrical connections?

K57XR reported that the K-r does not work (missing the lens ROM menu items) so you could add it to the "no go" list; myself I have a K-x on the way from a friend and will report back with my findings on that one.

No, they extended it for a week. I posted that link because it has the extra $5 code, but it has the old expiration date. If you click through to the macappdeals page the bundle is available for 5 more days.

If you're interested in AfterShot, there's a decent Mac bundle still available for a few days which includes a bunch of possibly useful apps including AfterShot Pro 2 for $40. I am a Civilization player too so it's like buying Beyond Earth and getting the rest for free.

Green button wasn't working on k50

If the contacts on the body don't make good contact to short out on the lens mount then the K-30 for sure (and I assume the K-50 as well, since they're very similar) will not meter with the green button in M mode unless you're in live view. You can test this with an M42 lens that doesn't short out the body contacts, or with no lens, to see if it's the same behaviour.

Not sure about the front wheel not working.

I can verify that my K-30, running firmware 1.06, is not able to dump the lens EEPROM on a 50-135. The menu option is there but it does not write anything to the SD card.

From what I have read it's the same as my K-30 - putting it in debug mode won't help. The menu option to dump the lens ROM is there, but it doesn't do anything.

Doesn't hurt to try though, as they do change things in different firmware versions sometimes.

No, there's no difference. That's all "crop mode" will do. It'll look the same as if it was on the smaller sensor... because it's only using part of the sensor.

Thanks... yes I have been soaking up all the info I can possibly find on the conversion procedure. Unfortunately my K-30 won't read the lens EEPROM. The implementation is stubbed out in the firmware, according to another post on this forum. The menu option to dump the lens ROM is there in the debug menu (I was able to get that far without much trouble) but does nothing. Supposedly it's the same for the K-50 and K-3 though I can't verify that (I only have the one digital body).

Edit: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/6-pentax-dslr-discussion/250555-resurrect...ml#post2756940

So I'm in the process of begging in groups on Facebook to try and find someone local with an older camera I can use for 10 minutes... :P
