1861 is the start of the transition. That is the year HMS Warrior, the first armor-plated and iron hulled warship, was completed. When commissioned it made every other warship in the world obsolete. She herself was made obsolete within 10 years. In 1871 the HMS Devastation was completed, it was the first seagoing mast-less turret ship. Ships that followed in the period 1871-1906 are called Pre-Dreadnought battleships because Dreadnought, launched in 1906, made them obsolete...The term Dreadnought (Super-Dreadnought for ships with guns larger than 13.5 inches) was used to describe battleships up until the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922. The ships that were built after the London Naval Treaty of 1930 were known as Fast Battleships...

So you can't use the low-end Nikons. But older AI compatible bodies aren't all that expensive...You can get a D700 (not a flagship but AI lens compatible) for less than $400...You can get a D7000 for less than $300...

My chrome KX cost me a total of $36 after shipping in 2010 (Shopgoodwill.com was so much better years ago...). The lot that contained my black KX cost me $149 in 2017. But that also had a set of Kenko AF extension tubes, a PZ-70, 2 35-80mm lenses (A & F), and a M 50/1.7 on the KX.

M42 goes back to the Zeiss Contax S of 1949. F-mount goes back to the Nikon F of 1959. K-mount was introduced in 1975.

It's the same camera (Minolta X-300/X-370).

Also...
  1. Centon DF-300

  2. Soligor SR-300 MD

  3. Kalimar KX 5000

  4. Seagull DF-300

  5. Carena SX-300

  6. Carena DF-300

  7. Safari DF-300

  8. Texer EX-3

  9. Zenit DF-300

  10. Revue DF-300

  11. Samyang DF-400x

It's a Cosina design manufactured in China...I find it interesting because it's one of two Cosina cameras sold by Vivitar that had mounts other than K or M42. The other is the Vivitar VN5000 with Nikon F-mount (Nikon FM10).

Forget about the 2mm difference at the wide end and get a Sigma 10-20, Pentax 12-24, or Tamron 10-24...Or even a Sigma 8-16...There are those who will tell you that the 15 Limited controls your mind...don't listen to them, they're just weak minded fools...
